New Tegan Quin - "His Love"

thumbnail: New Tegan Quin - "His Love"

Augusten Burroughs writes funny and sad and often devastating books. Tegan & Sara write catchy-ass songs. Maybe sometime's they're sorta sad. Tegan Quin recorded "His Love" sans Sara, and she does a good job. (Just like Sara did a fine job by her lonesome when she covered R.E.M. for our Drive XV project.) Here, Tegan maintains an understated, almost early Olympia-style bedroom-pop sensibility. Except when she layers the vocals and piano and doesn't. She wrote the track especially for the audiobook for Burroughs' new memoir A Wolf At The Table, which focuses on his relationship with his pops. If you've read Running With Scissors, you'll have an idea of what to expect. Which might give you some insight into "His Love"'s angle.

Tegan's is one of four songs written especially for the audiobook, which Burroughs himself is narrating. You can hear this one as well as the others -- Patti Smith, Grey's Anatomy rocker Ingrid Michaelson, and Sea Wolf -- streaming at Augusten's site.

A Wolf At The Table audiobook is out 4/29 via Macmillan Audio.

Hmm, it's not too shabby, but i still love the chemistry that tegan and sara have together better.
let's hope they don't each try to put out solo albums though. that's usually never works out well.

Sounds like a teenager experimenting with a tricked-out Casio keyboard.

I second Sally's motion. that is a seriously good quality track. Makes me excited for the sequel to The Con.

i wonder if they'll go the way Outkast on the next record and make 2 solo albums...

Well, seeing as Tegan and Sara actually write completely separately and usually don't even sing on each other's songs on the recordings (only in concert) this isn't really that different.... they do give each other feedback and collaborate occasionally, but they each write and sing half the songs on each album... so I doubt they would make two separate albums since they already do a lot of it separately.

This song is awesome and if you really think about it Tegan and Sara are both solo artist's anyway and they collaborate for the end result and live shows.

They both write their songs individually and then record them. They don't work together during the writing process. Sara usually sings on Tegan's songs, but Tegan rarely sings much more that backup for Sara's. I don't think we have solo albums to worry about.

This song makes me thing of I'll Take All The Blame. I think it's a lot like a lot of Tegan's other songs; deep and thought provoking. She puts her music together so well.
