New Thom Yorke - "All For The Best" (Stereogum Premiere)

thubmnail icon: New Thom Yorke - "All For The Best" (Stereogum Premiere)

When we posted the tracklist and background information for Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy, we hadn't heard anybody's contributions. As we said then, the compilation's 21-track lineup is impressive, the reason behind it -- the sudden death of Mulcahy's wife Melissa (pictured), leaving him to raise his three-year old twins alone -- heartbreaking. Now, going beyond the names next to the contributions, we can report that the opening track, Thom Yorke's percussive, electro-tinged cover of Miracle Legion's "All For The Best," is also impressive. He didn't mail it in, making it his own, while retaining the spirit of the original. As a result, fans of Radiohead, Miracle Legion, and Mulcahy should equally enjoy.

Indeed that is his brother Andy on backing vocals. A contextual refresher:

01 Thom Yorke - "All For The Best"
02 The National - "Ashamed Of The Story I Told"
03 Michael Stipe - "Everything's Coming Undone"
04 David Berkeley - "Loves The Only Thing That Shuts Me Up"
05 Dinosaur Jr. - "The Backyard"
06 Chris Harford & Mr Ray Neal - "Micon The Icon"
07 Frank Black - "Bill Jocko"
08 Vic Chesnutt - "Little Man"
09 Unbelievable Truth - "Ciao My Shining Star"
10 Butterflies Of Love - "I Have Patience"
11 Chris Collingwood (Fountains Of Wayne) - "Cookie Jar"
12 Frank Turner - "The Quiet One"
13 Rocket From The Tombs - "In Pursuit Of Your Happiness"
14 Ben Kweller - "Wake Up Whispering"
15 Josh Rouse - "I Woke Up In The Mayflower"
16 Autumn Defense - "Paradise"
17 Hayden -"Happy Birthday Yesterday"
18 Juliana Hatfield - "We're Not In Charleston Anymore"
19 Mercury Rev - "Sailors And Animals"
20 Elvis Perkins - "She Watches Over Me"
21 Sean Watkins - "A World Away From This One"

Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy is out 9/29 via Shout! Factory. It can be pre-ordered at Amazon. An additional 20 tracks from folks like A.C. Newman, Buffalo Tom and Laura Veirs will be released digitally.

Congrats Thom on butchering another one of my favorite songs, 'Tell me Why' wasn't enough, was it?

Awful, just awful, recycled beat from Videotape, terrible guitar in the middle. Sigh
There was a time when this man was able to distinguish quality from garbage. Let's hope his brother doesn't blow it, he probably will.

Agreed. This song is not very good.. but neither was Eraser, really. Thom Yorke needs the rest of Radiohead to really make his ideas shine. This sounds completely incomplete. And what's with the noisy guitar catastrophe near the middle?

I hope people bother to listen to the original, as well as everything else Mark has ever done. This whole thing kind of breaks my heart, but I wish him all the best and couldn't think of a better subject for a tribute album.
Mark was the first show I saw when I moved to NYC (at the Fez, r.i.p.) and I still remember the wide-eyed buzzing excitement surrounding that night with all the fondness I could ever hope to muster.

Actually it did get me into listening to the original. Now I'm hunting down more songs. Keep the faith, there's still people who like and want to bother tracking down new/old music to listen to.

This cover is beautiful! I don't know what the fuss is about, would you rather Yorke just phone it in? I thought the whole point of a cover is to take existing work and make it your own.

As a longtime Miracle Legion fan, I had a worst case scenario of how this version would sound and this is it. Thom Yorke took a fantastic ML song and turned it into a typical late era Radiohead/Thom York snore. I'm glad Mark is getting some public recognition from his peers, but I will never listen to this version again. Predictably dreadful.

as a long time Miracle Legion fan myself, i totally disagree.
i LoVe this version.

it reminds me what an amazingly beautiful song All for the Best is. And it assures me (once again) that Mark's lyrics and writing are timeless and magical and heart wrenching and it's not just me associating MM with the weed soaked whirlwind of being in my 20's in the under belly of the 80's.

i've never listened to Thom Yorke or Radiohead stuff. (funny- i might now.) i don't know how that informs my reaction to the song. but, i do listen to alot of other new under-the-radar music. and see alot of new (sometimes noisy) music live. my mind might be a little more open....

Thom Yorke modernized a classic without taking it's spirit. Great work, a Mulcahy song with Yorke's style, that's how covers should be, no copies, but transformation of material without losing personality. Thom Yorke = genius (adding that those distorted guitar sounds are unlikely anything I've heard from him until now. Clearly pointing to something new to come in his work).

I like that Thom made this his own, it sounds like quite a few of his recent lap-pop compositions. There's still enough interesting elements in the mix to keep it interesting and the percussion choices are good (I particularly like the snare sound that comes in and out). The guitar is a nice touch, too. It's obvious that a good deal of time was spent making this.

This is just a song that will be around for a while, you'll certainly come to like something out of it; to my ears it sounds like it will take time to really love. Knee-jerk reactions are just to the sound palette, not the quality of the song or the singing. I love the original but I'm treating this as something removed from that.

Get over yourselves you chumps, not only does he not butcher this by any means, he created one of the better covers of any song I've ever heard. And that's all it is anyways, a cover, and for a good cause nonetheless. I can't even fathom anyone NOT liking this song.

Well, it's a matter of taste-- if you don't like Thom's musical style, you're probably not going to like this cover. My question for the original posters complaining about it wouldn't be "How can you hate this?" but rather "So what?" Even if it becomes more widely known than the original, it doesn't erase the original song's existence or "ruin" it somehow. And if you're so insecure about your music that you can't listen to an original song without thinking of a "bad" cover and getting upset, then just don't listen to covers.

Thom Yorke covers a song by an obscure artist that 80-90% of the commenters have assuredly never heard and every single comment is about Thom Yorke minutiae and how good this Thom Yorke version is. What else is new.

I'd also like to note that every single Miracle Legion and Mark Mulcahy solo album is excellent. The solo songs are a bit more emotionally charged than this uhn-tatiss-tiss cover would have you expect. I think Thom Yorke is just doing what is expected of him now, but I don't mind if he exploits himself to get Mark some attention.

I made 2 comments, the second of which you misunderstood entirely. Recap of my beliefs for the riveted slow folks: it is a shame everybody is focusing on the Thomster when the goal is to get Mulcahy recognition; people are expounding on the greatness of The New Thommy 'Orke Song without any reference of, or reverence given, to the original. I don't mind that the posted cover is textbook Thomatized, despite the comments saying it's a revolutionary musical orgasm, because the focus shouldn't be on ThomBro's Positive Career Evolution anyway. He is "exploiting" himself and his "well-crafted" "sound" positively for an UnluckyButTalentedBro.

And uh, the people with a mean case of butthurt over this need to chill out. I could have sworn the WHOLE POINT of this project was to get Mulcahy more attention.... yeah, how dare that evil bastard Thom Yorke actually accomplish that goal! The fact that there are more people who have heard of Radiohead than Miracle Legion doesn't make either one's music any less awesome. Just enjoy the damn song (or don't, whatever) and get over it.

BOB: On a different note, because it seems you're gonna knock folks for liking the song. (A bit of a strange reaction.) I did listen to the original Mulcahy song today. I really liked it. I'd heard of his name and his bands, but never really listened to an album. So, this tribute album is doing what it's supposed to so far. By the way -- Mulcahy's original version of "All For the Best" immediately reminded me of TheThe's "Soul Mining" album. I say that as a compliment -- because TheThe is one of my faves. I will be checking out more of his stuff tonight.

The first time I heard Mark sing was at a Wilco show in Burlinton Vt. during wilco's "Summerteeth" tour. This guy got up on stage like a guitar tech...tuned his guitar and sang " "Caio, My Shining Star" solo/electric. I bought "Fathering" that night and have consumed most of mark Mulcahy's catalogue since. The question isn't whether or not this is a good Thome York cover of Marks song. The statement is ...this guy.....a talented artist..... has just suffered the paralizing loss of the woman of his dreams....and his friends are saying "Hey!!!! we love you Mark....can we help??" It's beautiful that they have shown up for such a thing. I look forward to the live show and will buy the record for friends. Just listen!!

this does trump 2/3 of the eraser. eraser has some of thom's worst lyrics. and alot of the songs have thom singing non-stop, which i found obnoxious. not to mention the cold prodcution, and the lack of variety of sounds. the eraser in general isnt that great and this is from one of Thom's biggest fans whos heard every song he's ever done from the On A Fridy days.

this song has warmer production. thom shuts up and lets the song breathe.and its good to hear some guitars in his laptop stuff. this song is by no means revolutionary...but its damn pretty and its always good to hear from thom.

people need to stop holding thom up to a different standard than other artists...this isnt 1999. nothing Thom does will satisfy this impossible standard he's being held up to.

Umm, not to do your JOB but, you SHOULD also mention since you brought up THOM Yorke, that Unbelievable Truth features ANDY Yorke, Thoms younger brother. Unless you didnt know that, but i'm ...sure you did:D (wink)

AND you might also want to mention that Mark Mulcahy OPENED for Unbelievable Truth (featuring ANDY YORKE...Thom's brother!) in NYC in 1999...at 'Shine' i believe was the name of the tiny club. I still have my UT braille-writing tee around somewhere, though they didnt have n.e. mediums the dicks haha.

I agree. Thom and Andy miodernized it and kinda gave it an upbeat sound. Great tribute! Byadding your personal sound the person will be more likely to remember you as having paid tribute to his/her loved one.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Mulcahy is quite grateful despite all the indie snobbery that fans concoct. Personally I think it sounds great, its like eraser but with guitars and easy to decipher lyrics. Although truly heartbreaking given the situation.

It's good, that I wouldn't dispute. But anyone with an SM57 and a few joints could have produced this. I wonder if everyone likes this because it's Thom Yorke who made it. Sounds like B+ work in an intermediate electronic music class.

It's way more than the electronic beat. The electronic part basically fades out when the guitar, stick clackings, and beautiful vocal harmonies come in during the second half of the song.

It's a cover, he did it as a pesonal favour for a good cause, there's no reason to start dissecting the track to determine its level of genius.

The song is much more than eletronics. There is an intense beautiful melody in the background and if those distorted guitars are any sign I think I am really anxious to see a new Thom Yorke solo album in a near future. Hats off to the Yorke, again.

What the hell does that mean?

And again, people aren't just saying they like this song because Thom Yorke sings it, you friggin idiots. They're saying they like it because it's a solid song with a good melody and a good beat. Go listen to some more "obscure" music that only "you" would understand you annoying dinks.

By the way Julia, only the beginning sentence is directed at you.

Know this. I drink no ones kool-aid. However, I do have artists I trust and Mark & Thom are 2 of them. That being said, there is nothing on this planet right now more heartbreaking than that photo of Melissa, and to see it followed by clueless, shallow complaints about Thom's interpretation of a song which is near and dear to me is disheartening. Context and self awareness people. This, of all postings should not be a forum for anger or whining about artists who you feel are undeserving of fame.

You know Chris why Picasso's paintings are the most expensive pieces of art of all time? I bet you know. It's because Gran Pablo has this adoring fans all over the globe and (how-stupid-of-them) they're paying this enormous amounts of money to buy every painting just because it's this stupid "Picasso" sign. Go grow up.

It's strange how critical some people are being of Thom Yorke's version. I would assume they don't like his style anyway, so it's a pointless critical statement. He has his own unmistakable distinctive sound which you either love or loathe. What is the point in doing a cover version which sounds just the same as the original anyway? It doesn't matter whether you like this version or not, the main thing is the reason for these tracks being released anyway, and Thom's contribution will probably double the sales of this compilation. I think the critical ones are the heartless ones and should rethink their reasoning for their comments.

When the verse comes up with the brother mowing grass, its a perfect touch to have Andy's vox. as backup... haunting !
I also think 'Miracle Legion' is one of the best band names ever.

Excellent cover in my opinion. I get a different feeling from the TY version than Miracle Legion's original. More melancholic, more wistful. That's what a good cover should do - open up a different perspective on the song.

I hope people buy the tribute CD when it comes out, and I hope it leads people to Mark Mulcahy's "Fathering". Or "In Pursuit of Your Happiness". Or SmileSunset". Check out mezzotint.com.

It's really sad to hear of Mark's loss, but equally heartening to see that his music is known and loved by so many other artists. Most of Miracle Legion's catalogue is out of print, and only available on vinyl/cassette if you can find it. This cut is from "Surprise Surprise Surprise," an energetic, layered, and evocative album with two sides of outstanding tracks. Mark lives and plays in the Notheast states, and his stuff is available from his own label, mezzotint.

While the circumstances of so many people 'discovering' Mark now are sad, his music is beautiful, and his lyrics and vocals come from a deep personal place. Please do enjoy his music and wish him well.

Thanks, Thom and Andy. Prayers, blessings, and thanks for everything, Mark.

I agree with many people here... this is one of the most heartwarming songs (or covers, or interpretations etc...) I have heard in a long time! "Say you love me, let's just say you love me"... goosebumps!!!.... Mark Mulcahy's writting is just amazing, and Thom Yorke's emotional interpretations only makes it better.

And I love the fact that the Yorke brothers were both involved in this, because after all the song as well as the purpose of this tribute is all about family.

On another note, I do hope Radiohead could continue in this direction of making more experimental work, but keeping it emotional.... Thom's ability to make voice patterns is the most beautiful thing, and I only think adding the rest of the gang would make it even more amazing.

cheers to all and dear respects to the Mulcahy family!
