New Tom Petty - "Saving Grace"
Mr. Petty lit it up at Bonnaroo, so we had to let you get an earful of the whiskey-blues of "Saving Grace," the lead single from his new solo album Highway Companion (out 7/25).
You can catch Tommy P this summer on the aptly titled "Highway Companions Tour" with Trey Anastasio, Pearl Jam, The Allman Brothers and The Derek Trucks Band. Featuring lots of guitar solos.

"la grange? zz top better sue somebody."
Yeah? And Bo Diddley better sue ZZ Top.

Shhh ... all this talk of sueing people near Tom Petty is making the Chili Peppers nervous.
Is that how you spell sueing? Or should it have been suing?
Neither looks right. Oh well, I'm rambling now.

Uh... I think that was the joke.

This is not bad. Not great, but good.
Armit, your link is busted. Had to copy and paste and do some adjustments to hear.

I think the ZZ Top boys might have borrowed from John Lee Hooker.

Should be all fixed up J. (I can vouch for the WMA link; don't have QT on my Intel Mac!)

Hey, just wanted to add that I covered the first show of this tour on the 9th in Charlotte, NC. If you're at all into Petty, you should get out and see it- the man is just an icon.

Icons are very rarely as good as the term "icon" would imply.

Damn, damn good. Glad to see a return to form for Petty-- it's not poppish like some of his recent work. It's not hardboiled, but STRONG.

Gotta love Petty. So not full of bullshit or pullin' tricks out of the bag to sound relevant or hip. It just comes so naturally for him. Truly one of the best American Singer/Songwriters of his time.

Seeing all this Petty-love on a blog devoted to hipper-than-thou artists makes me feel like I'm not so out of touch after all.

Not bad but didn't Jeff Lynne produce this? Doesn't sound like it. I mean, remember the good old days when he made everything sound like ELO. Ahhh, those were good times.

Rick Rubin produced the new album.

not la grange, listen to the beginning of One Bourbon, One Scotch One Beer by George Thorogood. its the same beginning. Everyone samples a sound from everyone in the music biz, whatever Tom Petty still rocks. ZZtop are amazing too.

The intro music sorta sounds like "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing" or whatever it was called by Chris Isaak.

F***in A!!!! I've been waitin for Tom to come out with something kick asss for a long time. This is classic. I was so happy when it busted out after the first minute. Keep it coming Tom!

LaGrange... One Bourbon, One Scotch... They Did Bad Bad Thing... and Saving Grace... all flowing forth from the vital wellspring that was John Lee Hooker. I even heard Petty from backstage at Bonaroo say "It's a rock and roll song with that John Lee Hooker beat." God bless Tom and all the others for proving that when something's just plain right, you honor it, you use it and pass it along, but you need to give props along the way.

Probably before your times, this is pure Canned Heat.

It is not Rick beard Rubin but Jeff movelo Lynne who produced it.... But he didn't have much time cuz it doesn't sound like violins and vocodors...

Hi, new to the forum.
I just heard the song today, "Saving Grace." It is a great song. But I had the feeling I had heard it before, probably from a movie.
Anyway, I listen to all the artists posted and Jim is right. It sounds an awful lot like Canned Heat's "On The Road Again."
