New Travis Morrison - "Catch Up"

Travis's solo debut Travistan may be the go-to answer at your indie rock trivia sessions, but that's not keeping the soon-to-reunite Dismemberment Plan singer from soldiering on with another record. Unsurprisingly, P4K is watching his movements like a hawk (or a buzzard), pointing us to his MySpace for the first track from Morrison's forthcoming album All Y'All. "Catch Up" is a sound amalgamator, kicking off with a bass line a few notes off from Björk's "Army Of Me" before moving into a feel-good chorus that's marred by some ill-advised rapping. Based on the cut, whaddaya think: Over or under last time?

All Y'All is out in April on Barsuk.

A band I was in opened for Travis a few times in 2005 and on those jaunts, he played only 1 track from "Travistan" (the hidden one). The rest was some of the best music I'd heard in a while. Everyone who saw him (all of 20 at one show) was anxious to hear what the next disc would sound like.

So, yeah, I'm excited to hear the new disc... "Travistan", really, wasn't THAT bad.

I booked Travis in Charlotte with his then-band Hellfighters and they were very awesome. Like D-Plan but all grown up... I'm not sure if they were playing songs from the new Travis, but Pitchfork can as always, kiss my ass.

I personally LOVE the rap! it's my favorite part of the song. Why is everyone drinkin' that haterade about it?

i LOVE t-mo. travistan wasn't good but pitchfork are ridiculous. i was so mad when they gave that review rating.

i really like this song a lot. i means a lot. i wish he posted shit on his site like he did back in the day. where else would i have such gems like "checkers and chess" and his cover of ludacris' "what's your fantasy?" exactly. that luda song is awesome. and it's rap.

Maybe it's because I still want more Dismemberment Plan, or perhaps it's because I can't see Travis being a happy-go-lucky guy dancing in a field of daisies, but I really, really, REALLY hate the direction he's going with his music. I thought Travistan was horrible and couldn't get past the first two tracks, and hoped that he'd pull a Stephen Malkmus and release an impressive, vastly improved second album.

I guess it's never going to happen.

Mr. Morrison just needs to embrace the fact that he is now a solo deal and stop arranging things for an imaginary band. "Checkers and Chess" was so good! This isn't bad, but the dude needs to release an album of that kind of thing.
