New White Stripes - "Walking With A Ghost"
If you haven't heard Jack and Meg cover Tegan and Sara, here's a stream...
The White Stripes - "Walking With A Ghost" (WMA)
Someone indicated in the comments yesterday: does Jack know he's playing the wrong first chord? Interesting. I was figuring it out on guitar over the weekend -- should be F#min. I think he knows and he's just being ... Jack.

Still have the mp3 of the live and studio versions at MOKB : http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/2005/10/white-stripes-cover-tegan-saras.html

Thank God for the MP3. Streaming was all buffered up.

Whew, that's some really dreadful drumming.

Thanks Scott.
Extrawack has a pointer to an MP3 download too at:

That intro certainly does sound a bit wonky, but I guess that's Jack's way of stamping it.
Score = 0
is that meg singing backup?
Score = 0
Those who dis the drumming read too much of the New Yorker.
Meg rocks my casbah.
Score = 0
wow, this version made me hate this song. and i actually liked tegan & sara's original version. barf.
Score = 0
If someone thinks Meg's drumming skills suck and the only contrary defense you can come up with is that you want to fuck her, that's pretty weak.
Score = 0
why is this so bad? why? c'mon jack, go record an album in a week beat up that guy from the von bondies again.
Score = 0
Here's the obvious defense, then. The Whites Stripes have been together for about a decade. During that time, they've supported their music with many, many live shows. It stands to reason that both of their playing has improved with all that, well, playing. So it's also reasonable to think she's playing pretty simply on purpose. It makes more sense to me than assuming that Meg White can not play her instrument after about 10 years recording and gigging. There's no bass player, so the drums have to be pretty solid. If she started going crazy with the fills while Jack went crazy with the guitar, you might end up with something approaching prog rock (which I would hate).
Score = 1
I agree with Janine...Meg White's not hyperactive, but she's a great drummer and her tracks really make the White Stripes what they are.
That being said, I hated this cover.
Score = 1
RE: Meg of White Stripes
Q: Can she keep a solid beat?
A: Yes, she can.
Then she's a good drummer. End of debate. You don't have to play 20 different poly-rhythms in 3 minutes to be a good drummer. It's not measured by how many different things one whacks, either. It's far more common to have a drummer that hits a lot of stuff but can't keep time than someone who can keep time but plays simply.
I hate The White Stripes but I would play with Meg in an instant, without question. I hate busy drummers.
Score = 1
it's like Ringo...rock snobs make fun of him, but actual drummers always tell me the man's amazing, at least for what the Beatles needed.
Score = 1
What!? Meg's not a technically amazing drummer??!! Next you're gonna tell me that Oasis rips off the Beatles and Clap Your Hands sounds like Talking Heads.
Score = 0
Just so long as we're agreed that she's a simple drummer NOT by choice, but cuz that's all she is.
Besides, the idea behind using a simple drummer is to emphasize the good guitar playing, wasn't that Jack's plan?
Score = 0
Good find. However there's a mash-up of the Teegan and Sara version with Mylo, which is about six times better; you may even find it on repeat for a few hours. This one's probably staying in my Temp Internet Files directory.
Score = 0
what the fuck are you crackheads smoking??? is it crack?!?! this cover is amazing and 30000 times better than the shitty original. just listen to the genius way he pronounces "ghost"
Score = -2
Nope. It's not genius. It just seems like Jack was fucking around and this was never to be taken seriously.
Let the man sing his Tegan and Sarah (which I also like and enjoyed their concert.)
Score = 0
She is an okay drummer. She doesn't have amazing chop, but that is okay. I prefer a little more swing and little more snare, but whatever - its her style. She has great time, no question, and her style suits the music. She's got soul, that's the most important bit. She makes good use of her toms, like Ringo did - gives depth to the sound.
Score = 0
Whoa this cover is amazing. I think u all just hate it because it's "cool" to hate the white stripes. That being said, you are all puppets. Hop off the bandwagon.
Score = 0
it's not "cool" to hate anything. it just so happens this cover was enjoyable and surprising to hear live and an absolute chore to make it through under any other circumstance.
throw this one on Duran Duran's "Thank You" album...

My friends and I once joked about having the Meg White drinking game... listen to Seven Nation Army and every time meg white messes up you take a shot. I think one of them actually tried it, needless to say he was sloshed.

that cover reminded me of the Mylo remix, and i made a YTMND with it as the background. i think its pretty cool, check it out.

p.s. you can get that song at partyben.com - its not a proper remix, its a mashup.

Meg is there to provide a beat and make Jack sound cool. It works. Wrong chord? What are you on about?

Here's the problem with this cover:
It doesn't sound good.

This cover rather sucks, like hard. Sounds as though they were trying to sing like Tegan.
Score = 0
Wow. They butchered Tegans song. I don't know why they gave them the rights to that song, they only just released it in Semptember. I had someone come up to me when I was wearing my T&S sweater and say "uggh they did such a bad cover of the white stripes' walking with a ghost" I laughed in his face and shoved him aside. They shouldn't have let them cover this.
Score = 1
I liked it.
if you dont like meg, keep it to yourself, we've all heard the "she sucks" speeches. and they all sound like they came from holier than thou rock know it all snobs. squares in other words. go on meg, freak the squares.

and why does EVERY single stripes discussion turn into a scraping the barrel insult match towards meg? people are just bitter because the white stripes setup shouldnt work but does.

thanks for posting the MP3. lots of people from my white stripes forum have been asking for it, but we can't post copywrited stuff or we get shut down.
god bless blogs!!!

I suppose if any band can take a really simplistic song and make it sound even more simple, then I shouldn't be surprised the White Stripes did a cover of this song. While I greatly prefer the original version of this track, at least the Stripes kept their own sound. Personally, I think my problem with Meg's drumming on this track is that the original T&S version had a simple beat which was catchy, and now EVERY thing about the song is one long repetitive loop. (Well, okay, except the backwards bridge)
Score = 0
The White Stripes have to be the most over-rated band/duo on the planet. Weak song-writing, below average musicianship, terrible singers. They absolutely suck! Is everyone deaf and stupid?
Score = 0
Ugh ignorance is bliss right? You cats must hate the 60's. Jack's a singer songwriter. The Stripes reflect that. It aint about showin off it's just about the music. It's so hip to hate drives me crazy.

WAHEY! im babysitting and just sent the kids to bed so i could commandeer the parents broadband internet connection! i can listen to this without all that buffering jazz! i havent heard the original i would like to though-whats the album? i havent heard of them over here in ireland! this is well cool nice and jumpy around. megs drumming is bad blah blah blah AND BIRDS GO TWEET!! get over yourselves. she rocks and shed kick your ass from here to hell

They totally ruined the song. It is one of THE worst songs I have ever heard. Tegan and Sara sing this song amazingly! But the white stripes just DESTROY it!

Wow, I just heard this single on rhapsody. Just awful, the original is infinitely superior.

The White Stripes are a comedy act, right? Whenever I see them or hear them perform, I start to laugh! The way they pretend to sing and play their instruments is downright hilarious!

Meg white is just what Jack needs and he made her that way by insisting she not take lessons. She has the rhythm and the steady beats to emphasize Jack's skills. Too bad she couldn't be hotter though.
She was once compared to John Bonham for the Get Behind Me Satan album, but I think that is bogus.

isn't it sara's song?

ewww this cover totally sucks, now i wont be able to listen to the original version ever again without tinking of this !
btw, it's sara's song, not tegan's.

so much jack white jealousy, lol

I like both the White Stripes and Tegan and Sara, but this is just bad. I agree with whoever mentioned the first note. I think he just didn't care enough to learn the song. He just did it the way he wanted it. Overall it's just a bad bastardized version of a great song. :( It's too bad.

I popped onto this board to read some comments on the song...then I see someone say something idiotic like The White Stripes exhibit "below average musicianship." I'm sorry, but you've never seen them live. Jack White is an incredibly talented musician, as evident in concert as he plays multiple instruments in nearly every song without missing a beat. Actually, come to think of it, I'm being too kind to the person who wrote this junk...you don't have the slightest idea what the fuck you are talking about. When you play the guitar better than Jack White, then you can spout off about musicianship. I'm off to vomit now...
Score = 0
I thought maybe because Meg White has been playing for several years she may have improved to competent. But I just saw the White Stripes on the Daily Show last night, and no, Meg White can not keep time, despite playing a beat any beginner could learn after a month or so of practice. She's plain awful, and I wouldn't fuck her either.
Anyone who thinks she has "soul" or that she plays simple beats out of choice and not necessity has probably never learned to play an instrument on their own and doesn't know better. Jack is the band. Meg is disposable.

you guys hatin this song are all nobs...i mean come on how could you not like this? and stop baggin meg...are you in one of the greatest bands going around? i didnt think so.

I loved this cover. It's very hot. And Meg does a great job. Those who don't think so aren't listening.

i just wanted to say that, like most covers save maybe ten percent, the original is way better than this. it doesn't seem like they really tried that hard. i have been a long time fan of T&S, so i may be "biased" but i have also liked a few white stripes songs... not many, but a few. it just sounds like jack white is rubbing a finger up and down his adams apple while singing. if i didn't know he could sing better i might think well this isn't terrible... and i don't care if you say its his way of singing or i don't get the white stripes or i am hating them just to hate them. you can either cover a song to make it sound JUST like the original, or you can cover a song to make it sound like you. but when you cover a song and it just sounds like a couple of second graders playing around trying to piss off their older siblings... somethings messed up. anyway, i'm sure i just hate them and that i don't get the sixties throw back sound they have (not that tegan and sara never use a sixties poppy throw back... eeeeever....)... so yeah.. eff this i'm going to bed.
Score = 0
Meg White's a filthy russian whore. And hopefully this two-bit one man/one robot variety show will stop torturing Abu Graihb prisoners with their bland crappy noise pollution and let them die.
God, even the Blue Man Group can make better music out of trash bins and vaccuum hoses!

ok.. i read all this stuff you guys wrote ... im not trtying to be offensive so dont get offensive with me... the song .. i dont care who plays it not a good song to begin with... and aobut the white stripes.. i love the band.. the reason why i love em is becouse how they can make something so simple sound so good..to me they sound as good as any other band who have like 4 people(all playing their individual instruments) playing real complex music... all you people tlaking about megs drumming or jacks singing to be truthful i dont really care and wouldnt care for many other bands in the same way beouse whatever theyre doing sounds good... i think jacks voice is awesome.. i really havent tought about megs drumming but i think white stripes wouldnt be the white stripes without her.. meg just adds a certain cool to the band and the sound... even from the recorded stuff you can tell who evers playing the drumms is enjoying themselves.. someone who most of you would consider a great drummer couldnt make the sound that meg does.. relax ppl dont get so technical whatever theyre doing is working and to me sounds good .. it might not to you but you dont have to be so agressive when youre telling us your opinion.... some might call me a ignorant opinionated jackass... and im willing to accept that..

Hi there, short time listener, first time caller here: Forget the white stripes. Thanks, bye.

The White Stripes are music landmarks, there music gives a refreshing taste to these 'cool' bands taht need state of the art equipment just to sound like shit. And why is everyone beating Meg White? She is a fantastic drummer and can keep a beat going better than most, what really upsets me are the ppl who take the piss of her singing, have you heard 'In the Cold, Cold Night'? Its a fantastic song with beautiful vocals, I'd like to see someone else do better
Score = -1
Meg white is an ok drummer to be backing up jack white aka John Gillis. Jack is Hyper meg is mellow it all works out.
Score = 0
Meg White isn't a great drummer. A Chimpanzee can accomplish the same thing that she does on the drums... heck, a chimp might actually be able to do even better.
Score = -1
The White Stripes suck. I saw them perform at the top of the pops show and it asucked. they were pretending to play their crap. I also Nirvana perform their and it was gilarious. Nirvana is better than the White Stripes. And JackASS married his sister SICK!

This is a solid song, but the stereo vocal effect is anoying. Another cover to add to the long list. Meg is awesome, I hate playing with busy drummers... and busy guitarists as well.
Score = 0
i like meg whites drumming, you actually notice them when listening to the music, as opposed to bands that seem to have drums just because it is felt necessary and then not given enough space on a track. pretty meg makes it sound like an instrument, instead of percussion. au revoir

ok so a lot of people have been debating why meg "sucks" at drumming.
well i watched an interview on youtube with the white stripes and they said that they liked the primitive sound so jack actually told meg NOT to get any better.
they just want to keep the sinmple beats. u dont have to go flashy and obnoxiously loud to be a good band. just bc they dont bust out in drum solos it shouldnt mean that they suck.

Well, every once in awhile I'm facinated with an unusual song and T&S version knd I've struck me. Usually, I like a much heavier sound. I don't believe in ghosts, not in the medival folklore sense, but there was something about this song. Also, I've been an interested fan of the White Stripes because they put out an unusual sound also. When I heard an online sample of this cover song I though it must be a practice session. I don't like to use 'hate' with music but that is my last reaction after listening to it several times. Its just awful. I'm feeling sad for T&S: I wonder if they became really ill upon hearing the cover. I don't know what other reaction they could have had.

All of you seem to have no musical talent. Listen to Death Letter and tell me, have you heard anyone play that slide solo better than Jack, besides Son House?

Christ if you think Jack White has no musical talent and you have seen him live you should just give up listening to real music an stick with Britney Spears. That's just friggin ridiculous - and frankly I don't believe you. No one could be that dumb. The guy is easily one of the better guitarists in the world right now..

Just saw the White Stripes, first show of their North American tour.
People, c'mon. I mean, really. All pretense. He's just a "dress-me-up" rockstar, likes to draw attention to himself instead of letting the music speak for itself, which it can't.
Jack is an okay guitar player. Just okay. He basically just rewrites and rehashes a lot of guitar licks from the 60's and 70's.
I don't mind some of the stuff he does with the Raconteurs, but he has the same delivery with all the songs.
And what the fuck is up with the "entourage" of "dress-me-up" stage crew complete with bowler hats. How fucking pretentious is that??? Again, it's about all the accessories, no substance.
And Meg? Give me a break. Why do people think they're being so musically perceptive by saying things like "they're going for the 'simple' sound." What bullshit. She can't drum, period.
She can never find the "one" (musicians know what this means). Are we just supposed to think it's cool just because she's a woman on the kit. Fuck, I've played with women drummers who really know how to back up a band, cleanly, succinctly, with honesty - and, no, you idiots who don't know what you're talking about, the opposite of simple, honest drum playing is not pretentious prog-rock lengthy solo drumming. Arghh!!! Meg wouldn't be able to pull off either.
I died of boredom at their most recent concert, and the "wannabe" fringe "alternative" (yeah, right)fans who were so pretentious.
Next.
Score = 0
i hear people saying "well, jack's a singer/songwriter"... SO FUCKING WHAT? isn't every band supposed to write their own songs? Whats the big fucking deal? You don't have to not get it, or not be into "basic" rock to hate this shit. I've come to the conclusion that everyone who likes this garbage ACTUALLY doesn't matter. no matter what you say, you don't know anything about music. fuck you.
Score = 0
All I can say is there's a sound for every person, or maybe a person for every sound, so take this for what it's worth... I don't follow the White Stripes at all, but keep hearing that one crappy song on the radio over and over again so it got me thinking I'd check them out a bit. I've only heard a couple songs of theirs, but it was bad enough to get me to type the phrase "White Stripes suck" into Google tonight to see what came up... hahaha!
Score = 0
Haha, I'm with the dude above me. I just typed in White Stripes sucks into google because the people I work with listen to this mix station that plays them all the fucking time. After I heard a song called "Seven Nation Army," I was filled with a righteous rage that someone like that could become successful.
Look people, the reason that the actual musicians in here are getting pissed off is because this crap is exactly what we sounded like when we first picked up our instruments and got a friend to jam with. If you were to stick a mic in the room of some 7th grader who knew a couple licks on guitar and his friend who'd never before played drums in his life and was given access to a drum kit, an hour later, you'd have the white stripes album.
All you assholes who say Meg is some sort of revolutionary drummer because she never took lessons, you make my head hurt. You can like whatever crap you want, but, just for me, when you have a toddler, get them a drum set and see what they do. I bet you anything they will go for the three biggest drums and just bang the shit out of em in quarter notes... it will sound exactly like 7th nation army. REVOLUTIONARY!
Score = 0
Everybody's going to hate me for this, but I actually think that the original sucked and the cover was a lot better.
I haaaate the vocals on the original. Every time I hear the original it feels like a cheese grater is being rubbed up and down on my eardrums.
Besides, Jack kicks ass at guitar, which totally makes up for Meg's drumming.

Whoever said real drummers like Meg is a moron.
I've been drumming for 16 years and have pocketed a few titles along the road; Meg still sucks.
You don't have to be able to play something complicated to play in a band, however, if you're going to be called talented, you do have to be able to play hard stuff.
It's that simple.
Rhythem guitarists who play 3 chord progressions every day of their life suck, it just doesn't neccessarily matter that they suck depending upon what role they play in the band.
On top of that, Ringo does suck.
Same story as Meg.
Score = 1
Oh, he's totally aware of it. He's very blatant about that major third, and he even sings it out of tune in the melody, bending somewhere between a minor third and a major third. I'm a fan of the White Stripes, but I think this song is one of their weaker efforts. I think he shouldn't have changed the chord. It just makes it sound weird, considering how catchy the original was (Say what you will about Tegan and Sara, they've written some damn good material). I miss the lead guitar fills. :(
