New White Stripes - "Walking With A Ghost"

If you haven't heard Jack and Meg cover Tegan and Sara, here's a stream...

The White Stripes - "Walking With A Ghost" (WMA)

Someone indicated in the comments yesterday: does Jack know he's playing the wrong first chord? Interesting. I was figuring it out on guitar over the weekend -- should be F#min. I think he knows and he's just being ... Jack.

Extrawack has a pointer to an MP3 download too at:

That intro certainly does sound a bit wonky, but I guess that's Jack's way of stamping it.

If someone thinks Meg's drumming skills suck and the only contrary defense you can come up with is that you want to fuck her, that's pretty weak.

Here's the obvious defense, then. The Whites Stripes have been together for about a decade. During that time, they've supported their music with many, many live shows. It stands to reason that both of their playing has improved with all that, well, playing. So it's also reasonable to think she's playing pretty simply on purpose. It makes more sense to me than assuming that Meg White can not play her instrument after about 10 years recording and gigging. There's no bass player, so the drums have to be pretty solid. If she started going crazy with the fills while Jack went crazy with the guitar, you might end up with something approaching prog rock (which I would hate).

I agree with Janine...Meg White's not hyperactive, but she's a great drummer and her tracks really make the White Stripes what they are.

That being said, I hated this cover.

RE: Meg of White Stripes

Q: Can she keep a solid beat?

A: Yes, she can.

Then she's a good drummer. End of debate. You don't have to play 20 different poly-rhythms in 3 minutes to be a good drummer. It's not measured by how many different things one whacks, either. It's far more common to have a drummer that hits a lot of stuff but can't keep time than someone who can keep time but plays simply.

I hate The White Stripes but I would play with Meg in an instant, without question. I hate busy drummers.

Just so long as we're agreed that she's a simple drummer NOT by choice, but cuz that's all she is.

Besides, the idea behind using a simple drummer is to emphasize the good guitar playing, wasn't that Jack's plan?

Good find. However there's a mash-up of the Teegan and Sara version with Mylo, which is about six times better; you may even find it on repeat for a few hours. This one's probably staying in my Temp Internet Files directory.

She is an okay drummer. She doesn't have amazing chop, but that is okay. I prefer a little more swing and little more snare, but whatever - its her style. She has great time, no question, and her style suits the music. She's got soul, that's the most important bit. She makes good use of her toms, like Ringo did - gives depth to the sound.

I suppose if any band can take a really simplistic song and make it sound even more simple, then I shouldn't be surprised the White Stripes did a cover of this song. While I greatly prefer the original version of this track, at least the Stripes kept their own sound. Personally, I think my problem with Meg's drumming on this track is that the original T&S version had a simple beat which was catchy, and now EVERY thing about the song is one long repetitive loop. (Well, okay, except the backwards bridge)

Meg white is just what Jack needs and he made her that way by insisting she not take lessons. She has the rhythm and the steady beats to emphasize Jack's skills. Too bad she couldn't be hotter though.

I popped onto this board to read some comments on the song...then I see someone say something idiotic like The White Stripes exhibit "below average musicianship." I'm sorry, but you've never seen them live. Jack White is an incredibly talented musician, as evident in concert as he plays multiple instruments in nearly every song without missing a beat. Actually, come to think of it, I'm being too kind to the person who wrote this junk...you don't have the slightest idea what the fuck you are talking about. When you play the guitar better than Jack White, then you can spout off about musicianship. I'm off to vomit now...

I thought maybe because Meg White has been playing for several years she may have improved to competent. But I just saw the White Stripes on the Daily Show last night, and no, Meg White can not keep time, despite playing a beat any beginner could learn after a month or so of practice. She's plain awful, and I wouldn't fuck her either.

Anyone who thinks she has "soul" or that she plays simple beats out of choice and not necessity has probably never learned to play an instrument on their own and doesn't know better. Jack is the band. Meg is disposable.

i just wanted to say that, like most covers save maybe ten percent, the original is way better than this. it doesn't seem like they really tried that hard. i have been a long time fan of T&S, so i may be "biased" but i have also liked a few white stripes songs... not many, but a few. it just sounds like jack white is rubbing a finger up and down his adams apple while singing. if i didn't know he could sing better i might think well this isn't terrible... and i don't care if you say its his way of singing or i don't get the white stripes or i am hating them just to hate them. you can either cover a song to make it sound JUST like the original, or you can cover a song to make it sound like you. but when you cover a song and it just sounds like a couple of second graders playing around trying to piss off their older siblings... somethings messed up. anyway, i'm sure i just hate them and that i don't get the sixties throw back sound they have (not that tegan and sara never use a sixties poppy throw back... eeeeever....)... so yeah.. eff this i'm going to bed.

well i watched an interview on youtube with the white stripes and they said that they liked the primitive sound so jack actually told meg NOT to get any better.

they just want to keep the sinmple beats. u dont have to go flashy and obnoxiously loud to be a good band. just bc they dont bust out in drum solos it shouldnt mean that they suck.

I don't believe in ghosts, not in the medival folklore sense, but there was something about this song. Also, I've been an interested fan of the White Stripes because they put out an unusual sound also. When I heard an online sample of this cover song I though it must be a practice session. I don't like to use 'hate' with music but that is my last reaction after listening to it several times. Its just awful. I'm feeling sad for T&S: I wonder if they became really ill upon hearing the cover. I don't know what other reaction they could have had.

Just saw the White Stripes, first show of their North American tour.
People, c'mon. I mean, really. All pretense. He's just a "dress-me-up" rockstar, likes to draw attention to himself instead of letting the music speak for itself, which it can't.
Jack is an okay guitar player. Just okay. He basically just rewrites and rehashes a lot of guitar licks from the 60's and 70's.
I don't mind some of the stuff he does with the Raconteurs, but he has the same delivery with all the songs.
And what the fuck is up with the "entourage" of "dress-me-up" stage crew complete with bowler hats. How fucking pretentious is that??? Again, it's about all the accessories, no substance.
And Meg? Give me a break. Why do people think they're being so musically perceptive by saying things like "they're going for the 'simple' sound." What bullshit. She can't drum, period.
She can never find the "one" (musicians know what this means). Are we just supposed to think it's cool just because she's a woman on the kit. Fuck, I've played with women drummers who really know how to back up a band, cleanly, succinctly, with honesty - and, no, you idiots who don't know what you're talking about, the opposite of simple, honest drum playing is not pretentious prog-rock lengthy solo drumming. Arghh!!! Meg wouldn't be able to pull off either.
I died of boredom at their most recent concert, and the "wannabe" fringe "alternative" (yeah, right)fans who were so pretentious.
Next.

I don't follow the White Stripes at all, but keep hearing that one crappy song on the radio over and over again so it got me thinking I'd check them out a bit. I've only heard a couple songs of theirs, but it was bad enough to get me to type the phrase "White Stripes suck" into Google tonight to see what came up... hahaha!

Haha, I'm with the dude above me. I just typed in White Stripes sucks into google because the people I work with listen to this mix station that plays them all the fucking time. After I heard a song called "Seven Nation Army," I was filled with a righteous rage that someone like that could become successful.

Look people, the reason that the actual musicians in here are getting pissed off is because this crap is exactly what we sounded like when we first picked up our instruments and got a friend to jam with. If you were to stick a mic in the room of some 7th grader who knew a couple licks on guitar and his friend who'd never before played drums in his life and was given access to a drum kit, an hour later, you'd have the white stripes album.

All you assholes who say Meg is some sort of revolutionary drummer because she never took lessons, you make my head hurt. You can like whatever crap you want, but, just for me, when you have a toddler, get them a drum set and see what they do. I bet you anything they will go for the three biggest drums and just bang the shit out of em in quarter notes... it will sound exactly like 7th nation army. REVOLUTIONARY!

Everybody's going to hate me for this, but I actually think that the original sucked and the cover was a lot better.

I haaaate the vocals on the original. Every time I hear the original it feels like a cheese grater is being rubbed up and down on my eardrums.

Besides, Jack kicks ass at guitar, which totally makes up for Meg's drumming.

Check out the Charlie Rose interview w/ the White Stripes and you'll understand Megs' drumming.

i'm personally begging jack and meg to jump off a very high cliff and encouraging those who think they have any musical talent at all to follow closely.

no instrument has been yet invented to measure how much white stripes music TOTALLY FUCKING SUCKS!

Whoever said real drummers like Meg is a moron.
I've been drumming for 16 years and have pocketed a few titles along the road; Meg still sucks.
You don't have to be able to play something complicated to play in a band, however, if you're going to be called talented, you do have to be able to play hard stuff.
It's that simple.
Rhythem guitarists who play 3 chord progressions every day of their life suck, it just doesn't neccessarily matter that they suck depending upon what role they play in the band.

On top of that, Ringo does suck.
Same story as Meg.

Oh, he's totally aware of it. He's very blatant about that major third, and he even sings it out of tune in the melody, bending somewhere between a minor third and a major third. I'm a fan of the White Stripes, but I think this song is one of their weaker efforts. I think he shouldn't have changed the chord. It just makes it sound weird, considering how catchy the original was (Say what you will about Tegan and Sara, they've written some damn good material). I miss the lead guitar fills. :(
