New Annie - "Anthonio"
![]()
There were rumblings from camp Anne Lilia Berge Strand re: a proper followup to Anniemal last summer (and some plain old rumbling in the fall via a Stacy Q cover), but this official promo clip for Don't Stop single "Anthonio" (complete with lyrics to help you sing along) should be the most promising (and fun) development in ages for fans of the Norwegian bubblegum electropop artist. It's a spacey lost-love song that makes Anthonio out to be a real lout, Annie asking "Don't you even know my name, Did you ever really care?" and repeating a bummed "Oh" more than 20 times. Best of all, it's being released by her post-Island porn-shop-sounding-label Pleasure Masters. Indeed.

I need to dance to this in a large dark room as soon as possible.

VERY good.

I have never wanted more to dance to a song on Dance Dance Revolution than when I heard this. That isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Finally, annie's voice is great for wistful brooding melodies. She was wasting it on that bubblegummy crap she used to release. I hope they retool the whole album to the sound of this.
Score = -1
I'm glad Annie realized she needed to improve what she already had of Don't Stop, it was a terribly uneven set of songs. The Xenomania dance tracks sounded vapid and way too manicured to be appreciated as true Annie, and I felt what could have been a foray into Lykke Li/esoteric, introspective electro-pop territory (just check ''Marie Cherie'', what on earth was she thinking?). The fact that she's kept on recording with Richard X, because when together they make magic happen, that she's done some stuff with Paul Epworth (!) and that she's said to have a gigantic collection of music made on her own, which has always proven succesful, only signals good spirits for a new Don't Stop. See? let's just leave Xenomania to Girls Aloud....
By the way, Anthonio only proves how brilliant Annie can get when she goes for starry-eyed, glitzy disco melancholia. And again Richard X, you totally hit it this time around.
