New Atlas Sound - "Attic Lights"

thubmnail icon: New Atlas Sound - "Attic Lights"

"Walkabout" isn't the best track on Atlas Sound's second proper full-length Logos, but it is the song that features a member of Animal Collective, which is likely why it got out there first. Truth is, it's kind of album's curve ball moment. Even though its more skeletal than some of Logos (see, for instance, the show-stopping "Quick Canal"), the spaciously intimate "Attic Lights" nails the collection's vibe better and feels more representative of its overall aesthetic. Cox offered some background on the song in his initial Logos statement:

Sasha Vine [of Sian Alice Group] provided a double-tracked improvised violin part to "Attic Lights" which was recorded backstage at a Deerhunter/Sian Alice Group show in Brighton. It might be my favorite moment of the album. I played it for some younger friends of mine. They cringed. They wanted more songs like "Walkabout." Something with a big beat. I told them when they get older they will appreciate things like harmonicas and violins...

And Fleetwood Mac covers. Take a listen to "Attic Lights":

Logos is out 10/20 via Kranky. Remember to catch the CMJ bound Cox on tour with Broadcast.

Unfortunately it seems like, apart from the Panda Bear song, this is gonna be another very mediocre Atlas Sound album. Oh well, I hope at least he manages to make at least one more song on par with River Card.

From what I've heard, the title track, My Halo and Quick Canal are all at that level.. It does seem to be quite a bit stronger than his debut. I haven't heard 3 or 4 of the songs yet though.

You just love rubbing it in that you have the album already. I want this to leak so bad I can't stand it.
Also, I don't see the sign in. It used to be at the top. Where is it?

Yes, the violin is nice. But it's just one droney note. The rest of it is boring, as was the FM cover. No wonder the leak hasn't spread.

Cos he is the leader of a, mainly derivative, indie rock band who wrote a few catchy songs and got hyped up. Also he has an unique appearance and character. He wrote some great songs but most of his work, even with Deerhunter, is not that great. Microcastle hasn't aged well, Cryptograms has some more timeless songs.

"hasn't aged well?" are you retarded or from the future or something? it came out a year ago.

Exactly. It got old and boring even after a year. Weird Era Cont. is a bit better, the songs are not so predictable and boring.

You think it's mediocre, a lot of people don't, evidently.

people hating on this song are crazy. it's one of Cox's best songs yet, a stand out among an ever increasing amount of quality output. It seems like each new release shows him mastering a different element. And his voice is getting better, too.

This song has grown on me immensely and the live version is amazing as well. For all the haters, try being creative instead of whining about other artists work. You people are so spoiled
