New Chris Cornell (Feat. Timbaland) - "Long Gone"
You know, tough thing about Jesus Christ poses: they're just not that easy to keep up for too long. Those who remain righteous do not get rich, but do get deified; those whose arms sag get vilified, get paid, and hopefully let themselves get forgotten. I think most of us gave up hoping Chris Cornell would turn back towards his soundgarden of Eden awhile ago, but now it's time to start hoping he'll show some mercy, and just stop; things have gone from bad (Audioslave) to worse (Feat. Timbaland). This new track "Long Gone" is a love song, which is OK because love is nice. It's got flange-ing "My Love"-y production and a general "Apologize" vibe, which is OK because those were hits or something. But when you add that voice to the canned, cookie-cutter radio-ready mix, the voice that was once "Outshined," and we're down on our knees today: the grace fall is complete. You can stop now. Let's please start with the forgetting. Forget redemption, I'll go with repression.

I'm 33 - Cornell and Soundgarden are a big piece of the soundtrack of my youth and my first memories of independence when I attended college out of state. He was a rebel and a iconic symbol of anti establishment, with a sound that lead the masses of kids my age to a wild place. Wakeboarding in the summer before it was a the national f'ing pasttime, partying, and just letting out aggression is where the music took me. 15 years later, people have to realize that you go through that phase and grow. He's been down that road, as have I, and he's on to new things. You can't live in the "red zone" forever- unless you're mentally challenged- you hit your heights and move on. The people that bitch for him to get back to "basics" need to realize that it's not up to Cornell to take you back to that place. I'm glad he's doing something different, I dig it. My tastes have expanded to stuff like what he's doing now and I still I appreciate his old music. If he was still grinding out the same stuff it'd be boring. It takes an original hardass to recognize another and those of you who don't get the international vibe he's throwing now weren't in the know back when this was in it's prime.

"Long Gone" is not a love song. It's a "saying goodbye" song. And just how many times have you heard it? It's a "grower" like many of Cornell's songs. The more I hear it .... the more I like it! ( I'll like it even better without the "Ryan Seacrest.com" recording that interrupts it.)
And, I've said this before, you can't bottle Cornell and keep him the same as he was in Soundgarden. LIsten to the song "Ghosts" from Carry On, his last solo album. "He doesn't live here anymore!" A message to his fans that say he's moved on from grunge to explore new paths.

I've just heard Long Gone for the first time. I'm absolutely horrified. Why has he done this???? I hate it, I really do. It sounds so generic. Where has that beautiful voice gone? Where is the soul of the song? Oh yeah, drowned beneath a noise of boring and cheap sounding beats. My respect for Chris Cornell has dwindled dramatically since hearing this- and to be honest since hearing about his collaberation with Timbaland in the first place. My friends and I paid out a load of money to go to Rock Im Park in Germany where CC was scheduled to perform...and he cancelled with just weeks to go in order to fit around Timbaland's producing schdule. We were gutted - but still had a great time at the festival, and consolled ourselves with the thought that a new album would be just round the corner. I feel like he's abadoned his loyal SG/(early) Audioslave fans in favour of the mass, musically ignorant, market. I'm sat here listening to Jesus Christ Pose wondering what the hell has happened to this former grunge God.

I think a closer look at Chris Cornell's career would keep you from looking at this new Timbaland-produced material so negatively
All of his work, from Soundgarden/TOTD, Audioslave, solo records Euphoria Morning and Carry On, they've been largely different. The music has definitely changed, but his singing voice has proved versatile, fitting in particularly well with whatever musical group he's playing with.
Soundgarden will always be great, and Chris has never taken actions or made statements against such. The man is still touring songs that span his ENTIRE career. I believe he played "Outshined" last night in Philly!
Cornell's voice raised the bar with Soundgarden, Audioslave, and I'm sure that'll be the case with the Timbaland album.

Seems like everyone expects Chris Cornell to just curl up and stagnate somewhere; (somewhat) understandably, human nature dictates that we hate change in the things we love - well...GET OVER IT!! Nothing Chris has created over the years has been a duplication of any of his previous work, and I know I'm not alone in being grateful for that (wouldn't that get a tad boring??). Sure I've had to get over the "initial shock" of some of Chris's more radical changes, but after REALLY listening to his new stuff, I always end up loving it: You know why?? Chris Cornell's VOICE is unparalled in music today (IMO, it's unsurpassed in any of the music forms he chooses to sing), and THAT never changes. Hell, he could sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" and make it sound like a classic, and live, his voice sends chills right up your frickin' spine. I've LISTENED, more than a few times, and I LOVE "Long Gone". (The rest of you kind of remind me of a whole new "Woodstock Generation", except you'd be better described as the ('90s) "Lollapalooza Generation"...you can tell your kids about it in another 10 - 20 years, & you're gonna look just as silly).

Chris Cornell, throughout his entire career, has always explored different ideas and styles in music and has always been labelled a "sell-out". The live versions of Watch Out and Long Gone are better than the recorded versions. I agree that his new stuff is very different, but other artists have done similar things, aka KISS doing a disco album! I agree with you Suedehead. While I am all about expanding your horizons as an artist, and exploring new musical terrains...when you listen to the track, it just seems so....pasteurized. I miss the intensity of his vocals and they seem buried under all the overdubs. Maybe the song lyrics or the structures of the song are excellent. I couldn't get past the overall "packaging" of the song. I miss having songs (and vocals) that would grab you by the throat and not let go, instead of having the same songs remixed by the same people, all sounding the same. Bring back the passion!

This song isn't horrible, but isn't very good either. It is very forgettable and it will not sell well. You would expect a collaboration with Timbaland to produce a track that was catchy, with a a nice hook, but this is bland even by pop standards.
Cornell excels when he puts soul into a song and communicates pain. It seems to me that when this track was recorded Cornell was more worried about hitting all the notes than feeling the song as he sang it. Perhaps it would be better if he just let go and felt the song as he sang. I have a feeling someone in the production process made him self conscious about hitting the notes and the end result is this song.
If Chris Cornell is going to go electronic with his sound then he should team with Trent Reznor and make an industrial album. This song just does nothing for the senses.

This song is a joke. There are no two ways around it. It's not only because it does not sound like sound garden or even Chris Cornell for that matter. It's because it is a bad song.
