New Death Cab For Cutie - "Meet Me On The Equinox"
While you were busy applauding Beyoncé's resolution of the Taylor Swift/Kanye West crisis, you probably forgot to log on to mtv.com to hear the first single from the Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack. As we've noted, the vampire flick might feature Radiohead, Bon Iver, and Muse, and definitely features noted Pacific Northwest bloodsuckers Death Cab For Cutie, who penned "Meet Me On The Equinox" expressly for the film. According to Ben Gibbard it's "about meeting another halfway, because life is very short," a theme which applies both to teenage vampires in love and also the fans of indie rock bands who suddenly find their favorite groups soundtracking flicks about teenage vampires in love.

I really wish the writers at Stereogum would stop with the snark about great bands being on the soundtrack of a movie you don't understand. Here's a thought...some of your readers might actually like both good music AND the Twilight series and be pretty excited that said good music will be in the movie. Also, for the record, I'm 28 yrs old; obviously not a teenager. I'm just sick of everytime I read something on here about one of these artists being included on the soundtrack I end up hearing the same whiny BS. It's not like it's just one random artist choosing to be included--the last movie had Iron and Wine and Radiohead--this movie will have Bon Iver, Radiohead, Muse, and Death Cab. Maybe there is something to the fact that multiple artists are willing to contribute work to this project.

Plus, even if it is for money, can you blame them? They aren't changing their music to fit a certain mold, so they aren't sell outs. They are simply creating more good music for us to enjoy. More importantly, noone can stay in a profession where they don't make money. And since when is there a problem with artists trying to extend their audience? Does this lend itself to the eternal "Can it be 'Indie' if it's popular" debate?

I,too, am not a teenager, a huge fan of good music and also happened to enjoy the Twilight books. I love that artists I like are contributing to the soundtrack. I can honestly say that when my friend gave me a book about vampires I scoffed and said I was not gonna read a book about vampires in love. Lame. But I gave it a chance and was hooked. Stop being so pretentious guys.

it's so literal. i've always had that worry about dcfc--they're sometimes so literal--which is ok for songs, but in a film-- if this is what the film will be like, yikes.

Countless interviews have Gibbard stating that he believes he is a very literal writer and prefers storytelling than more cryptic writing.
I mean if that is where the Gibbard's grassroots remain, then we must appreciate those songs where there are more abstract ideas rather than belittle his preferred niche.
Personally, I am diggin the song, notably the drums. If you like the song or don't like it, leave it at that and stop being so critical.
And by the way, there's a DCFC Harmony Summit at the end of the rainbow, where we'll blow bubbles and have ever so much fun.

Personal experience wise, I've actually read the books and they just seemed overly dramatic and contrived to me. But hey, different strokes for different folks. This is a site about music, not about bitching to each other about a teen classic (because regardless of your feelings on the matter, that IS what it has become).
Personally, I enjoyed the song quite a bit. The drums were catchy and the vocals were fine. It wasn't anything groundbreaking or anything, just an average song for Death Cab. I was a little worried when I had heard he was making a song exclusively for Twilight. The way he wrote it was nice too, you kind of have to squint to see the ties to the book.

Here's the rule to determine whether a band has jumped the shark when it comes to writing songs for movies. If you can imagine Celine Dion singing this song, then you've failed.

Oh that's priceless. Mel Harmony says it's "sooo rush". I found this article searching for "meet me on the equinox rush" because I was immediately struck by the resemblance. I can understand why they wouldn't want to point this song out to Rush. damn lawyers would probably find some way to sue for copyright infringement. i'm not talking about the lyrics, but the music and production.
