New Death Cab For Cutie - "Meet Me On The Equinox"
While you were busy applauding Beyoncé's resolution of the Taylor Swift/Kanye West crisis, you probably forgot to log on to mtv.com to hear the first single from the Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack. As we've noted, the vampire flick might feature Radiohead, Bon Iver, and Muse, and definitely features noted Pacific Northwest bloodsuckers Death Cab For Cutie, who penned "Meet Me On The Equinox" expressly for the film. According to Ben Gibbard it's "about meeting another halfway, because life is very short," a theme which applies both to teenage vampires in love and also the fans of indie rock bands who suddenly find their favorite groups soundtracking flicks about teenage vampires in love.
You can also stream at TwiSpace.
If you pre-order the Twilight Saga: New Moon OST for $9.99 you can have that MP3 immediately, but if you pre-order the soundtrack for $499.99 you can have the MP3 immediately and get some sweet Twilight stickers.

Different, but still "death cab." I approve. This is a good sound for them.

This sounds so much like The Killers

It needs to be so the kids get confused, buy it and request it on the FM pop radio stations. Its not good enough to get radio play, though.

I heard the song three times on the radio today.

Have you listened to the radio recently?

I really wish the writers at Stereogum would stop with the snark about great bands being on the soundtrack of a movie you don't understand. Here's a thought...some of your readers might actually like both good music AND the Twilight series and be pretty excited that said good music will be in the movie. Also, for the record, I'm 28 yrs old; obviously not a teenager. I'm just sick of everytime I read something on here about one of these artists being included on the soundtrack I end up hearing the same whiny BS. It's not like it's just one random artist choosing to be included--the last movie had Iron and Wine and Radiohead--this movie will have Bon Iver, Radiohead, Muse, and Death Cab. Maybe there is something to the fact that multiple artists are willing to contribute work to this project.

Yeah, it's called money. That's why indie rock bands are willing to attach their music to a shitty franchise. They've been doing it for over 30 years. Remember the Valley Girl soundtrack?
Score = -2
Actually, Ben Gibbard is a fan of the books.
Plus, even if it is for money, can you blame them? They aren't changing their music to fit a certain mold, so they aren't sell outs. They are simply creating more good music for us to enjoy. More importantly, noone can stay in a profession where they don't make money. And since when is there a problem with artists trying to extend their audience? Does this lend itself to the eternal "Can it be 'Indie' if it's popular" debate?

^^ Sounds like somebody needs to find a new website (and a more interesting choice of literature, but that's beside the point). Amrit pretty much nailed it in that last sentence.

Better than most of Narrow Stairs. I'm a little put off by the lyrics, they don't sound very Death Cab-esque to me
Score = 0
I like Death Cab, but the last 2 albums haven't been that great.Ben sounds like he's doing his impression of Peter Murphy. Pass.
Score = 1
I,too, am not a teenager, a huge fan of good music and also happened to enjoy the Twilight books. I love that artists I like are contributing to the soundtrack. I can honestly say that when my friend gave me a book about vampires I scoffed and said I was not gonna read a book about vampires in love. Lame. But I gave it a chance and was hooked. Stop being so pretentious guys.

fffffffrrrrrrrrrrrrrtttttttttt tt t ttt.t.tttttttt, did you hear that?

I don't know...A liittle Gerry Rafferty's ok... I'm just glad he wasn't on my Superman soundtrack for no reason...the cover looks like Neil's "Down to the Wire" sounds...

Sounds like Placebo, weird.

Not that good, until the chorus. Overall, i give it a C+.

499.99 for the soundtrack?! must be one hell of a compilation!

lyrics feel a little clunky to me... doesn't really have that lfow i expect from a Gibbard penned song.

$499.99 for the soundtrack?

I think he is making a joke about Twilight...why make a joke about a joke?
Score = 0
Hmm. I think I'm going to say pass. Them doing Twilight is a ploy. One that will owrk, but still. Same reason in other regions, BG kisses Dave Eggers and Jon Krazinski's butts, you know? Not that this isn't a talented band but they don't seem to have a personality of their own anymore. This sounds like the Killers.
Score = 0
I thought the $499 think was a joke, but it's not--- pretty crazy that they're actually offering something like that.... way to take advantage of those Hot Topic-ers!
Score = 0
It's not like they sold out...they were kind of a soft-rock band anyway.
Score = 0
My idea for the twilight soundtrak is to have a internet only release like radiohead...that
way all the teeny-boppers can pay $$$ to buy twilight shit without it annoying everyhuman
being on the planet.

Paul Julian Banks X Ben Gibbard = This terrible song.
Score = 0
I still think Flyleaf - All around me would be a fantastic track for New Moon
Score = -1
it's so literal. i've always had that worry about dcfc--they're sometimes so literal--which is ok for songs, but in a film-- if this is what the film will be like, yikes.
Score = 0
Countless interviews have Gibbard stating that he believes he is a very literal writer and prefers storytelling than more cryptic writing.
I mean if that is where the Gibbard's grassroots remain, then we must appreciate those songs where there are more abstract ideas rather than belittle his preferred niche.
Personally, I am diggin the song, notably the drums. If you like the song or don't like it, leave it at that and stop being so critical.
And by the way, there's a DCFC Harmony Summit at the end of the rainbow, where we'll blow bubbles and have ever so much fun.
Score = 1
not that good
Score = 0
The drums are very nice.
Score = 0
Definitely not one of DCFC's best but still a pretty cool song. If it had nothing to do with this movie (which I have zero desire to see or hear about), people would probably have more of an open mind about it. Ben, Chris, and co. have a lot of great songs, a lot of good songs, and some not so good. This would probably fall into the good category...

Noelle...so you're just a loser. Not a teenager anymore.
Score = -1
Nice way to turn a discussion about music into personal attacks, Not really thinking I'm the loser in this situation.
Score = 0
Personal experience wise, I've actually read the books and they just seemed overly dramatic and contrived to me. But hey, different strokes for different folks. This is a site about music, not about bitching to each other about a teen classic (because regardless of your feelings on the matter, that IS what it has become).
Personally, I enjoyed the song quite a bit. The drums were catchy and the vocals were fine. It wasn't anything groundbreaking or anything, just an average song for Death Cab. I was a little worried when I had heard he was making a song exclusively for Twilight. The way he wrote it was nice too, you kind of have to squint to see the ties to the book.
Score = 0
Love Death Cab. Great musicians, and awesome sounds, but they should have sold this song to RUSH. It's sooo RUSH.
Score = 0
Erie how much it sounds like RUSH. I thought it was a new song from them when it came on the radio. Sold it to RUSH? Sounds like they stole it from them.
Score = 0
The Rush song it sounds like is "Ghost of a Chance" off their 1991 release "Roll the Bones." The verse melodies sound very similar.
Score = 0
Shouldn't it be Meet me at the Equinox? Meet me on the Equinox sounds like a "lets-do-lunch" kind of thing
Score = 0
According to Ben Gibbard it's "about meeting another halfway, because life is very short," a theme which applies both to teenage vampires in love and also the fans of indie rock bands who suddenly find their favorite websites covered in Coca Cola advertisements.
Score = 0
WOW this sounds waaaaay too much like Placebo, I'm a huge Placebo fan and was like "woah what? a new song?" then I found out it was DCFC and I was a little disappointed but still very happy
Score = 0
This song is terrible.
Here's the rule to determine whether a band has jumped the shark when it comes to writing songs for movies. If you can imagine Celine Dion singing this song, then you've failed.
In this case, "Meet Me at the Equinox" sounds like a Sarah Brightman tour slogan.
Score = 0
Yes! It's totally Rush, like a chilled version of Rush from the 90s. I love this song
Score = 0
Oh that's priceless. Mel Harmony says it's "sooo rush". I found this article searching for "meet me on the equinox rush" because I was immediately struck by the resemblance. I can understand why they wouldn't want to point this song out to Rush. damn lawyers would probably find some way to sue for copyright infringement. i'm not talking about the lyrics, but the music and production.
