New Devendra Banhart - "Lindo Cihuatlán" (Stereogum Premiere)

thubmnail icon: New Devendra Banhart - "Lindo Cihuatlán" (Stereogum Premiere)

We heard new live Devendra Banhart last week. Today we can offer the recorded variety, though it's not from his next record: "Lindo Cihuatlán" shows up on the soundtrack for Rudo y Cursi, the flick that reunites Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna for the first time since Y Tu Mamá También. They play two brothers working as laborers in rural Mexico...

[U]ntil one day a scout spies their friendly game of soccer and sign them on as star athletes for rival teams. They quickly learn that the high life of top players-fame, money, and beautiful women-has a dark side....

Whoa. Banhart's take on "Lindo Cihuatlá" is hushed, spare, sad, and quite beautiful and spooky, even if you don't speak Spanish. It's one of those moments you're reminded that behind the class-clown persona, the guy does have talent. The film's soundtrack offers an interesting mixed bag -- folks like Juana Molina and the Black Lips tackling Mexican standards, etc. -- so take a look at the track list, too.

01 Tato "El Cursi" Verduzco (Gael Garcia Bernal) - "Quiero Que Me Quieras"
02 Los Odio feat. Juan Son - "I Want You To Want Me"
03 Juana Molina - "Rudo Y Cursi"
04 Devendra Banhart - "Lindo Cihuatlán"
05 Mexican Institute of Sound feat. Saúl Hernández - "Árboles De La Barranca"
06 Niña Dioz - "Prefiero El Asfalto (Por Puro Gusto)"
07 Jóvenes y Sexys - "Amor Platónico "
08 Los Látigos - "Besos Y Caricias"
09 Adanowsky - "Historia Sin Fin"
10 Dios Malos - "Sueño De Amor"
11 Quiero Club - "Quiero Que Me Quieras"
12 Kumbia Queers - "El Dolor De Micaela"
13 No Somos Machos Pero Somos Muchos - "Amor del Cielo"
14 Black Lips - "Árboles De La Barranca"
15 Quiero Club feat. HC - "Pegadito"
16 Disco Ruido! - "Mi Amor Contiki (Guaca Tiki Mix)"
17 Nortec Collective Presents Bostich + Fussible - "Árboles De La Barranca"

The Rudo y Cursi soundtrack is up at iTunes on Cinco de Mayo, the rest of the digital world 5/19, and in stores 6/9 via Nacional. The film itself premieres in Los Angeles and New York City on 5/8, then opens nationwide throughout May and June.

Diego Luna looks like Brandon Flowers during the rugged Mexican days of the Killers. It's a shame, however, that this little film will fail to garner any critical reception given our collective aversion towards our neighbors to the south for potentially decimating our society.

The powers that be really forced them on the world but by SNL I bought into it...Blood Sugar led to Electric Ladyland in the spring which bled into Ritual side one in the morning and side 2 on the dark ride home...besides all the bullshit they were REAL musicians. John turned me onto Trout Mask which is why Bitte Orca is so delightful and accesible even though I haven't heard it yet...

It's pretty good, better than the movie, which is actually good, but don't expect Y Tu Mama Tambien grandiose... this one is lighter.
