New Dirty Projectors - "Ascending Melody" & "Emblem Of The World"
Dirty Projectors have been playing "Ascending Melody" live since April '08, though the first time we heard the track at Music Hall Of Williamsburg it was called "That's My Move" (or at least that's how they introduced it). You'll find this loose, chatty (and pretty damn epic) studio version on the "Temecula Sunrise" 12", which as mentioned also includes the title track, "Cannibal Resource," and the romantic, sunny newbie "Emblem Of The World." this song is terrible. at first the guitar sounded like a terrible hip hop loop. the vocal melody is horrendous.

pretty hilarious that they're so polarizing. even if you hate what they're doing, you have to admit that it doesn't sound like anything else out there. can we save the negativity for overexposed bands that suck at the expense of originality --- like all this army of lo-fi "chillwave" clones?

Look, I don't think it's a huge deal either way. It's just a band, and everyone's totally entitled to enjoying whatever experience they enjoy.
I totally agree with you about rewarding bands that sound unique, but I don't think that standing along is enough for a band to merit attention or acclaim. I like a lot of music that sounds like nothing else - I consider myself to have an open mind, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to listen to music that I find physically painful and unpleasant. There are a number of unique bands out their that don't have that effect on me, you know?

ya i love the dirty projectors (ex Rise Above and Bitte Orca) but this song is in fact annoying and not as well composed as some of their other songs.

yeah, it is pretty funny. i absolutely love bitte orca, and i think this new track is pretty great too. the things that seem to piss people off- the off kilter guitar, the vocal arrangements and melodies- are what make the songs great, as far as i'm concerned. it's like we're all listening to different tracks.

What I love about Dirty Projectors is the fact that the melodies, arrangements and rhythms can be difficult to hear on first listen, but i've always found it very curious, leading me to want to hear a song over and over again until I expect it all, and it is both musically refreshing and rewarding
