New Flaming Lips - "The Supreme Being Teaches Spiderman How To Be In Love" (Stereogum Premiere)

The Spiderman 3 soundtrack caught us all off guard with its indie-friendly roster of artists offering original contributions, and though the Walkmen, YYYs, and Black Mountain tracks are all impressive (particularly that Black Mountains cut, so good), you're most curious about Coyne and Co.'s offering, originally titled "Spiderman Vs. Muhammad Ali." How Wayne planned on roping Cassius into the Spidey saga, we had to know. Later, the Lips changed the track title to the equally awesome "The Supreme Being Teaches Spiderman How To Be In Love."

What would happen to Muhammad? Well, he still plays in the lyric scheme, though we're not quite sure how, or why. The song itself is sorta sad; the Lips resist their typical, "Spoonful Weighs A Ton" urges toward inevitable exuberance, keeping it melancholy throughout. Have a listen.

If you haven't yet, hear the Walkmen and YYYs tracks at MySpace, but just know that the Black Mountain cut ("Stay Free") is our big winner.

Spider-Man 3: Music From And Inspired By is out 5/1 on Record Collection.

There was actually a Spider-man vs. Muhammed Ali comic book back in the day, so it's not just completely surreal.

Not to be confused with the Spider-Man vs. Chuck Wepner comic book.

Only the Lips could do something like this and not have it be the stupidest damn thing in the world. Well, okay, the Lips and TMBG.

Wow. I'm one of the biggest Lips fans ever (from OKCity) and I taste a little vomit in my throat. I mean, spongebob was one thing, but cheese-us crust that song blows. Wayne, why?

What are we to do about this? I'm going to go soak in fake blood and towel off with my American flag and reflect upon this matter..

you all are crazy..the lips song for this soundtrack is very good! it sounds good it feels good...just an all around good song! honestly i wish i knew what some of you people think? what is defined as a great song? this is a good tune! by a very talented group of musicians.....people who think this song is bad, get over it....what is wrong with it? why so critical? i have played it over and over and it just sounds better the more i listen to it! whoever referred back to their early stuff, what is wrong with you? their early stuff was just noise...the past several albums they have made are great songs...melodic, and lyrics are savy and interesting! i have become a recent fan because of their recent music, i hope and prey they stay on the same course..because i am looking forward to their new music! keep up what your doing lips, stay on course with your music style of late you guys are onto something good! it's won you a well deserved grammy...its the type of music that shows your true music talent..and will get you into the hall of fame soon enough!

I think it was said well in another blog about their "Good Luck Chuck" song. The Lips are oneo f the only bands that can pull off selling out and still look like artists. I really couldnt care less if theyre doing commercials or writing ridiculous songs for movies like Spongebob and Spiderman. I thought this song was better than the one they wrote for SB but i liked "I Was Zapped By The Lucky Super Rainbow" more than this song. The best thing about the Lips is that you can never really predict what theyre gonna do next. They have changed so much in style and music in the past twenty-five years. Personally, I hope their next album is better than AWWTM. Its not a horrible release but after listening to Yoshimi and Bulletin and Transmissions I just feel they couldve done better.
