New Green Day Forthcoming This Spring • If you thought Billie Joe & Co. closing out the Grammys on MC duty was random, it wasn't: The trio's eighth album, 21st Century Breakdown, the followup to 2004's American Idiot is out in May: USA Today has the bite-size details. Thoughts of a Stereogum reader upon seeing this story:

hating green day = instant indie kid coolness.

everyone likes green day, so to out-indie then, you must hate them. this makes you cool.

i'd rather listen to a sound collage made entirely of panda bear's farts mixed by jeff mangum, produced by nigel godrich. this makes me a hip individual and much cooler than anyone who doesn't turn up their nose to power chords and easily-understood lyrics.

i hope everyone forgets that i used to jerk off to dookie before i learned that it was cool to hate green day. i was just a kid.

OK, I usually don't care about this sort of thing, but you must be 14 years old or something. I was in 7th Grade when Dookie came out, so that put me into *exactly* the demographic their label was shooting for in the early 90s and even as "a little kid" I knew that shit was about as far from "punk" as you could get. You could've called me a snooty 12-year-old, sure, but don't think for a second that Green Day was ever considered "indie" or "punk" or anything like that except by the most "Orange County" of punk kids in the 90s (kids who also liked "The Offspring"! HA HA [/7th grade fuck]).

Green Day was never, EVER, evereverever, considered punk/underground/indie by *anyone* outside of California. Anything that tells you otherwise is simply revisionist history.

actually, they are just bad. animal collective, neutral milk hotel, modest mouse, the fucking fleet foxes, sufjan stevens, grizzly bear. ask anyone under 900 years old who they are, and they'll know something or other. there is a difference between being on an indie label, and being a band that attracts "megaindiedouche"'s. just because a band isn't on fucking Z 100 FM doesnt mean they don't have a shit ton of listeners.
