New Jack White - "Fly Farm Blues"

thumbnail icon: New Jack White - "Fly Farm Blues"

As reported, this Tuesday was a busy release day for Jack White and his Third Man Records: the label put out singles by Dan Sartain ("Bohemian Groove") and Transit ("C'mon And Ride") -- both produced by the Third Man main man -- as well as the track that made the three-pack singles release day a press event in the first place, "Fly Farm Blues." It's Jack unaccompanied in fuzzbucket slide-guitar mode on a song we're told was "written on the spot ... at the request of film director Davis Guggenheim while filming the incredible new guitar documentary It Might Get Loud," which is all about JW, the Edge, and Jimmy Page, and how they love their guitars. (Here's a trailer.) So this isn't a grandly premeditated dose of Jack songwriting, it's more just a glimpse at Jack inhabiting some standard blues in his not particularly standard, singularly scorched sorta way. Have at it:

"Fly Farm Blues" is out now on one-sided 7" and digitally via Third Man Records.

good god damn. i dont care what any of you say, when this guy plugs in his guitar, everything ridiculous (creative? artsy?) hes done over the past 5 years is forgiven: the slow conan appearance, the dead weather choking thing, the M-A-N-ipulate thing....all of it is tolerable to get to this.

As a 100% straight guy, I can't understand why this guy isn't battling Brad Pitt for sexiest man alive.

Women, please explain.

Also, this is really good stuff.

one sided 7" releases arent anything new. Jack's old label Sympathy for the Record Industry released loads of one-sided 7" records

Good but not that original. I mean the blues been around for years. SO he added distortion to it. WHOA!. Luv the guy but cmon.

He wrote it in ten minutes, Andrew, give him a break. He also did it without loops, samples, Macbook Pros and Protools. Not that I have anything against those technologies, but I do think it deserves to be mentioned. But I can definitely agree on "luv the guy."

Separate from that argument: Jack White is the last in a line of dwindling musical legends. I don't love everything he does but I have an infinite amount of respect for him. I think all music fans should as well. As for the song sounding like "Ball & Biscuit," umm, have you ever heard real blues songs? They're are only so many progressions to choose from--all blues songs inherently sound the same. It isn't the chords that separate you from the masses, it's the emotion, verve and honesty. Three qualities Jack White has no problem utilizing.

Well, at the very least this song will have some historical significance. It has got to be the coolest guitar driven song released on the same day Les Paul died. Without Les Paul we would have just been listening to 3:18 of silence. Carry On My Wayward Son....

Radiohead does not suck.

Also the documentary should have been about Mr. Page really, the other musicians are talented but need more time to fully develop. Probably cause Page would have been embarassed to be the subject of a 2 hr film.
