New Julian Casablancas - "River Of Brakelights"
The release date for Phrazes For The Young has been pushed back into November, but Julian's solo stroke is still on course with its streaming bits, first via lead single "11th Dimension," most recently with a four-minute album preview. The next Casablancas-sanctioned listen is "River Of Brakelights," which is itself about as ADD as Friday's LP collage sampler. Julian said he was trying "to capture the catchiness of modern music," but this one is more about capturing the schizophrenic anxiety of post-Yorke music. Weird arpeggios and breakneck beats swirl in phrazes, while the key gradually modulates upward in total. Try substituting "getting the hang of it" for "the raindrops" and you have a "Sit Down. Stand Up." freakout. Somebody get Julian a valium.
Phrazes For The Young is out 11/3 via Cult/RCA.

I didn't know that Thom Yorke's new band was putting out studio material so soon...nor that julian casablancas would be doing vocals.
thanks, stereogum!

Awful.

Unless this album has a (Keep Feeling)Facination...it's probably come up short...

I actually think it's pretty impressive! I never expected anything this complex from his solo album and it's a very welcome surprise.

This song makes me feel like I left another song playing in another browser tab at the same time.

i really like this! it reminds me of king crimson. i have to say though, there is something about this that disappoints me.
every time i would watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzMJyUboKwQ , I would be totally awed over the song clip that starts at 2:07. i was hoping that that was part of a song. well it turns out it is. it turns out it's part of "river of brakelights," but, unfortunately, JULIAN IS SINGING OVER IT EVERY TIME IT HAPPENS, so you don't get to hear it in its simple instrumental beauty. AHCK.
These songs seem to be full of layers of great, melodious stuff. I think it would be cool to get a hold of these in a form where you could open it up in music editing software, just to explore all the layers.

what are you basing that on? the album sampler video that was posted a few days ago only showed a couple seconds of each song so there might be a part of "glass" that is still only instrumental.

WORST PRODUCER EVER

I love this song the way it lurches to and fro accompanied by jules' hypno-drone really overwhelms you, I cant listen to anything but this song right now. This album is going to be amazing!

I like 11th dimension, and I like the strokes, but this doesn't do it for me.

I don't think it sounds weird or complex AT ALL. It does remind me of "Electricityscape" from First Impressions of Earth, with a little bit of "Vision of Division" from the same album.
Vid's down so to see it, here's two links:

what about the second time?
timing the hang of it
getting in everything
getting the time of it
everything hang on it....
I love that this song is 5 minutes.....

No, there's a similarity in the music as well. A bit like the last part that goes "the raindrops, the raindrops"...

"Try substituting "getting the hang of it" for "the raindrops" and you have a "Sit Down. Stand Up."
