New Muse - "United States Of Eurasia"

thumbnail icon: New Muse - "United States Of Eurasia"

Muse released "United States Of Eurasia" in six parts via their fan community so it would take six times longer to realize they'd become a Queen cover band. Take a listen.

The Resistance, the group's fifth album, is out 9/14.

First they were Radiohead. Now they are Queen (as if the incredibly obvious Queen outbursts aren't absolutely tongue in cheek). I would rather have a band who pushes themselves too far, then all of the bands out there struggling so hard to sound so goddamned alike. Say what you will about Muse, but don't tell me they are copying everyone else. Besides, Queen was an amazing band, and in these times more than ever, we could use a little excess.

Uhhhh... with the resurgence of glam, prog andcheese metal that we've seen I'm not sure we are as short on exess as you suggest.

As for Muse, they have some good jams but the lyrics have never been good and I'm a lyrics guy at heart.
Seriously, "Our Time is Running Out" sounded like it was written by Jonathan Davis of Korn

They've gone to some lengths to distance themselves from those early Radiohead comparisons with this sort of thing. I didn't think they'd be able to make me laugh as much as I did when I first heard Knights of Cydonia but they prove me wrong! Keep 'em coming you crazy bastards...

ok. that's fine that you can laugh at Knights of Cydonia and USofE, but i don't think that's entirely an insult to the band. i mean, have you ever seen the music video to Knights? watch it, and it's very obvious that the band is not taking itself seriously with that song and that they are making fun of theselves a little bit. its over-the-top, grandiose, etc, making it a little ridiculous. but in the end, its just a fun song! i would feel embarresed for muse if they were completely serious about it, but you can see in the video they are not. more likely than not, its the same case with united states. it's a fun, cool song and thats it. the idea behind it is just fun and interesting to sing about, but they aren't serious.

it's a little bit of camp. speaking of queen... there was another band that didn't take itself too seriously.

the knights video is just a great homage to spaghetti western/sci-fi. honestly, if it were a feature length, i'd watch it. quentin tarantino's made a career on semi-serious/semi-tongue-in-cheek tributes to older styles. works for me

omg the best part about Muse is that they SO COULD make a musical and it would be so g-damn amazing. yet they also rock emotionally and truthfully. The passion of human existence in all it's ridiculous excess AND it's genuine power of "what the F is life!?" ness that is so very not ridiculous... they keep me always in love, laughing and wanting to scream up to the heavens! Rock opera!

The thing about Muse is that you can tell they put a lot of effort into their music and that every member of the band is a highly skilled musician. But their lyrical content is just cringe-worthy; it's all conspiracy theory sci-fi bullshit that fantasises about overthrowing totalitarian governments. Their last three albums are filled with it, and after hearing this song and reading titles such as 'The Resistance', 'Uprising' and 'Unnatural Selection' it appears their forthcoming effort will be too.

Man you guys are a bunch of haters. They're obviously not trying to hide the queen in this track, but it doesn't mean they're a "Queen cover band" now as Stereogum's excellent journalist put it. Do you honestly think the rest of the songs are going to sound like this anyway?

Has anyone ever listened to Queen? Aside from the multi-tracked vocals that are reminiscent of 'Bohemian Rhapsody" (which are also used to better effect in "Knights of Cydonia", and probably the only song anyone of you is referencing when saying they sound like Queen), this doesn't sound like any Queen song I have ever heard, and neither does anything else in Muse's catalog. This song really is not very good though, and their lyrics are pretty much cringe-worthy. That being said what else does anyone expect from Muse? They are a bombastic ROCK band. Not everyone is gonna sound weird/mopey like Deerhunter, or so mellow like Grizzly Bear (Which most of you will turn your back on when it is not hip to like them anymore anyway.) Muse is about being operatic, anthemic and having fun, and you know what? That is ok sometimes Pitchfork Nation! At least they are different enough that they don't sound like Nickleback, or some garbage like that.

I agree with Matt. I can't believe you guys hate this so much. 90 percent of the song sounds nothing like Queen. And how could a few seconds in a song make you start hating a band that has released so much great music? Besides, this is just one track off the new album. We have no idea what they have in store with the new album.

What you all forget, and being stateside it is forgivable, but this is the most popular band in Europe, among the youth it even rivals RH. Now, this band is telling the youth to revolt/ that there needs to be a unified Europe and Asia. I don't know why this doesn't raise more eyebrows, but the point is, if you're going to send that message wouldn't this be the sound of the song you wrote. For crissakes the closing SIA SIA SIA!! is downright imperialistic.

I agree with your sentiment. Most popular music absolutely sucks and deserves to be categorized as shit. Yet I would not exactly herald Muse as the savoirs from such shit. In this song, their songwriting is uninspiring: a typical brooding piano intro followed by yelling "United States". To me, this sounds just as bad as the filler tracks on Absolution, and nowhere near the glory of "Knights of Cydonia" or "Map of the Problematique". Plus, the singer still sounds like a rip-off of Thom Yorke and the band is on its way to becoming just another typical stadium rock band. I prefer a band that truly pushes the definition of music, like Radiohead or Dirty Projectors. Not a band like Muse, who continue to produce average music while riding on the coattails of what has come before.

Yeah, I think the Queen/broadway-esque style is a bit overdone, but just because they have one Queen-inspired song doesn't make them a Queen Tribute band. Heck, on Black Holes & Revelations you had a System of a Down -inspired song (Assassin) and a Strokes-inspired song (Starlight), neither of which go anywhere near Queen or Radiohead. So even if you don't love their music, at least give them props for continuously trying new things and attempting to evolve... that's something that can't be said about the vast majoirty of bands these days.

I will agree that the lyrics are kinda painful on this one (though at least they're not as bad as Invincible)... but lyrics have never been Muse's feature quality anyways. It's that they are over-the-top excessive, pompous and bombastic in every kind of way that a band shouldn't be, but somehow they make it work.

The lyrics are rough, but I believe this is the "way over the top" bit of this album, much like Knights was for BHR. Aren't the choruses in Knights just as Queen-y? ("No-one's gonna take me alive......")

I imagine they were laughing their butts off recording this track, and the rest will be nothing like it. Maybe that's just me.

The vocals; yes. However, if you listen to the guitar behind the harmonies that too sounds exactly like Brian May. For me at least, this seems to push the song out of the territory where they simply evoke Queen through the music, as in Knights of Cydonia, and closer to something approaching mimicry.

This is quite interesting actually it seems to be an accusation behind a grand over the top song. This song is about the war on terror, and the possibility of countries giving up their sovereignty for super states which could lead to world government. The war on terror cannot be won, how can it? Anyone could be the enemy. This would lead to the offering of world government which promises no war or poverty, in which there would be then economic slavery. The accusation is complete by the grand Queen like theme which oozes sarcasm and playfulness. Real issues disguised as a fun jest. I think it's excellent.

I have to agree that this song uses Queen influenced techniques, but it doesn't mean muse is a "queen cover/tribute" band. I mean seriously, if you say Muse copied Queen, then it must be true that Queen copied The Beach Boys. "Derrrr...The Beach Boys is the first rock group to use four part vocals so Queen MUST HAVE copied them....". Anyway, the point is don't rip on bands for being inspired because it simply isn't fair to be ripped on just because some other band used the same or similar musical techniques first. And even if you use the techniques, at least use them well, which Muse has, and have used before [go rip on soldier's poem or Butterflies & Hurricanes (depending on which queen techniques you're wussing about) while you're at it]

also some other pointers: lyrics could be a bit more creative but the main purpose of them in this particular song to get the message across, and they have fulfilled that purpose. and at least its better then random giberish or if the only message (repeated countless times in many mainstream songs, as well as that particular artist's album) is "i'm gonna take you to /meet you at club as foreplay then take you to my bed...B****"

Also can someone tell me what link they had with radiohead? Bellamy and Yorke sound completely different (Bellemy with the much more powerful voice and higher range) and they usually sing about different stuff. Yorke usually sings about the pain and Bellamy usually sings about standing for your rights

anyway i'm gonna go so you can winge about my comment or, preferably, agree with me.

to put it plain and simple: it's a clusterfuck. it's 500% overdone, and can't be anything but a joke. furthermore, i wish it sounded more like queen, queen fucking rocked.

i like to listen to/purchase music when the artist takes it seriously, otherwise it will just be some funny thing that i look up on youtube or download from wherever. and maybe that is a fault of artists nowadays, or of consumers in general. we are just primed for a weird al parody, but you simply couldn't do that with this song. you couldn't make it anymore ridiculous than it already is

Muse are one of the best live bands on the planet. They always try to go over the top and I don't think this will be any different. People that are critical of this band just aren't getting it in my opinion. Its about entertaining with them if you ask me, and they are one of the most successful bands in the world at it. Their albums don't sound the same, they are really talented musicians, but Bellamy isn't the best lyricist. So What?? Just listen, be entertained and don't be so serious, you may find that if you go see them leave, you will understand why people are fans of this band.

Score = 0 Vote up Vote down

I guess I'll try to give you an honest answer, even though the last thing the internet needs is someone else going on about how great RH is.

OK Computer and Kid A in particular are why this band is innovative, though some may disagree about Kid A. These came out almost a decade ago. You could compare these albums side-by-side with music being released nowadays but that would miss the point entirely. It's about the right music at the right time and place becoming extremely captivating and influential. The pervasiveness of their influence is felt in all different genres by all kinds of musicians. Not only is the content of their albums notable, but their ability to get fans who had been listening to the more straight-ahead rock songs of their early band life (Pablo Honey) to embrace a more intelligent, complex music en masse.

All of this, coupled with just a very consistent output of decent music. Say what you will about them, but the band has longevity--and not just longevity in a sense of managing to stay together, longevity in both being praised by a majority of critics and fans alike.

so like... I've seen a lot of comparisons to Queen, and a lot complaints that the new album "won't be good."

a band that takes an overt influence from musical theater doesn't necessarily sound like queen so much as queen also sounds like musical theater. just sayin'.

and anyway, isn't this the path they were already on? can anyone who heard "invincible" or "knights of cydonia" really say this is that different? i certainly can't. it's not that bad.

Wow. That was epic in the mostly awesomely bad sort of way. I love it. As for complaints they sound like Queen -- and? How is that any different than the dozens of bands that regularly get featured here that just as shamelessly pilfer from Joy Division, Pixies, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Echo & the Bunnymen, Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, and so on while claiming it's a tribute? Stealing is stealing is stealing is stealing. And I'd much rather the theft of Queen sound like this than My Chemical Romance's attempts at butchering Queen.

certainly drove it to excess with that comment! ha, it's interesting, how we look for circuses in the most desperate of times. but if you want excess...

i would say that an underrated aspect of this discussion is shown in how muse bridges boundaries between fans of metal, punk and for lack of a better term 'hard rock,' and classical, pop, alternative (whatever that is). go find me a band who would be gladly received by fans at say, a my chemical romance concert, some death metal hardcore underground show, at a mtv movie awards show or a symphony hall with full orchestra? few would properly fit all these bills.
muse's sound is flexible in many genres, and they do it so capably by fusing sheer musicianship with a keen sense of what interests them personally. the concepts seem to require passing the cool test. example:

hey, let's do a western film type music video, but instead of guns, let's give them laser beams. sounds awesome. they go and do it. it's over the top goofy. fans love it, arena rock to the max, but it all works because they back it up with enthusiasm and lights.

conversely:

hey, let's make up a worldwide conspiracy themed concept album like something out of a james bond flick but emphasize the futuristic aspects. suddenly it's an accessible idea about globalizing powers. keeping it vague, mysterious, but precise and artistic, almost scientific in nature. sound familiar (now we can call them radiohead wannabes, but who isn't...)

only muse succeeds in both these scenarios.

you're certainly right in saying that this is why they deserve to emulate if not surpass a band like queen in their own right. queen goes down as one of the greatest rock bands ever even with what some might have thought were daft and farfetched ideas, but in the end they succeeded with a formula that wouldn't seem to make sense on paper even by today's standards of an open-minded public.

bottom line: muse is actually really great. go catch them live. they live up to any amount of hype.

(And one more thing: I forgot to the other band everyone is talking about here: Radiohead. "Paranoid Android" was as influenced by Queen as anything Muse has ever done...)

That is such a good point - Paranoid Android was every inch a Bohemian Rhapsody for the disenfranchised, miserable, Indie '90s.

Queen made a career out of making epic and highfalutin songs about the most mundane, everyday things (such as bicycles). Muse does not need to write songs about global politics, of which they seem to know very little, to make good, epic, chorus-driven pop. They should go the whole hog and write songs about filling out their tax returns or going to an nice little tea shop for cream teas. After all, they are from Devon.

Muse is one of my all-time favorite bands, but I will admit one of their major flaws is that they tend to let their influences supercede rather than complement their own style. Supermassive Black Hole, Map of the Problematique, and United States of Eurasia cross the line from influence to homage (of Millionaire, Depeche Mode, and Queen respectively). Perhaps this is why many Muse fans have fond memories of Origin of Symmetry (and to a lesser extent Absolution)....those albums didn't have nearly as many moments where we forgot we were listening to Muse. So although USofE is a good song, the jibe at them being a "Queen cover band" isn't completely without merit.

Pitchfork gave this song a 2, and somehow it makes me like it even more. To inspire a 2 means Pitchfork is actually screaming at us, "You CANT LIKE THIS BAND!!" Really? The new Jay Z song is better than this? It's certainly no 10, or even an 8, but a 2? These Indie bloggers take themselves far too seriously, for not actually making any music of their own.

I just want to say that muse has been verging on being a rock opera for a while. Their music has been so theatrical, and perhaps, for lack of a better word, epic for the sake of being epic. It is fun energetic music. I enjoy being able to listen to intense music without having to listen to horrible screaming and double bass pedal all day long. And it was only so long before they sounded like queen, just get over it and enjoy the music.

Muse have and always will make music to challenge musical pre-conceptions and I am sure they will always create work that splits opinions. But in reality, is that not what music is about? In a sad time where a high percentage of record labels and the 'record-buying' public want a quick release, a fast buck, and easy sing along chorus its refreshing to see bands like Muse taking chances. Im not sure that they got this one totally right if I am honest, however on sheer effort points alone, it surpasses much of the dross that currently infects our radios. Yes Mr Jay-Z you are correct, we have definitely been "doing to much t-pain'in" Personally I am glad bands like Muse and Radiohead continue to try new and different things despite being 5 or 6 albums deep. They don't have to take risks, but they do anyway. That take balls! The best thing of all is, is that they clearly make music that invites people to talk about it and make judgement..... and look what we are all doing!

Oh, thank god! I was afraid that Muse's newfound level of global popularity post-Black Holes would water down their taste for the absurd, which I relish so very much. Quite the contrary! How in hell did they manage to top the over-the-topness of Knights of Cydonia?
There are plenty of bands making perfectly sensible, linear music right now. We need Muse to be as out-there as Matt's paranoid fever-dreams can take him. He seems to be channelling the zeitgiest of everything from talk-radio to Hollywood with the impending doom he foresees. It's best not to dwell too much on that--just focus on the glammed-out glory of it all. I fear for U2 as this band opens the show for them. Muse will likely be the only band in the stadium worthy of that out-sized stage. What will all the 30- and 40-something soccer moms, their Bono-crushes throbbing beneath their j. Crew sweater, who've gone to such trouble to get a baby-sitter for a special night out make of all of this?

Wow, I am amazed by the amount of people bitching about their resemblance to Queen. And that is a bad thing how? Who would you rather they sound like, Motley Crue? BTW, US of E isn't the only song Muse has that sounds like Queen, listen to Butterflies and Hurricanes, Hysteria, Time is Running Out, Stockholm Syndrome, Blackout, Sing For Absolution, Knights of Cydonia, Soldier's Poem, Assassin, Exo-Politics, they ALL sound like Queen. But it's only now people pick up on the resemblances. And why is everyone taking a dump on Matt Bellamy's songwriting? I personally think he's a brilliant songwriter. You may not think much of the subject matter, but you can't deny his songwriting style is pretty good. And like the others have pointed out, at least Muse has the balls to try something different with every album and take it to the next level, sometimes it'll work, sometimes it won't, but at least no one can ever accuse this band of being repetitive. I wish could say the same for Nickelback, these guys make the same record OVER AND OVER AGAIN, it boggles my mind as to why anyone would buy a new Nickelback album if they already own one, cause it's the exact same crap. And that's why 20 years from now no one will really remember them, cause there's nothing innovative or special about these dudes. If Muse wants to still be relevant 20 years from now, then they're always going to have change things up and continue to wow the fans. And in order for them to last that long, they WILL have to have an album or two that will flop. You can't have such a long-lasting career without a few bumps in the road. Even Queen didn't always hit it out of the ballpark. Anyone remember Hot Space? If these guys weren't immune to making a mediocre album, why would any other band be? It's called taking risks, and it's what separates the boys from the men, the lack of fear for failure. A hit album is never guaranteed, you can do everything right, it may still flop. How many critically acclaimed albums have also been commercial failures and vice-versa? TONS. So you might as well not give damn and do what you feel is right. That's what Queen did. That's what Muse is doing. That's why they kick ass. How many other bands do you know that could make a masterpiece like Bohemian Rhapsody and then be the first guys to write an ode to women with large asses like Fat Bottomed Girls? ( Sorry Sir Mix-a-Lot, but you're not THAT original.) How many other bands do you know that could do a bad-ass song like Plug-in Baby and then be completely comical and over-the-top with Knights of Cydonia?

In fact, I believe this is one of the only blogs I've come across that people are hating on it.. so you guys better get used to it because it will only be played more and more with the coming times.

Of COURSE it sounds like Queen. Is that not pretty obvious! But they obviously made that obvious as a nice little joke, a little "o wow it sounds liek queen" for listeners. I don't think they would ever claim to have not been influenced by Queen on this track. Its an amazing track and Muse are one of the best around constantly freshening up their sound, making good MUSIC and not same four chords trash that you get or just playing chords loudly in the hope it gets classed as rock. Matt bellamy is a musical genius and its great their music is classically inspired and alternative. thats the point of muse. The queen references are tongue in cheek, as are their references to lots of other music in other songs e.g. Chopin in collateral damage.

It goes farther than "United States of Eurasia", the next song " Guiding Light" starts suggesting Queen's "Made in Heaven" initial beat. Yes, this is definitely a kind of Queen Tribute or a total lack of MUSE from MUSE. Ah and "United States of Eurasia" came with "Chopin Etude" included (at the end), I guess that was the only part that did not SUCK.
