New Norah Jones - "Chasing Pirates"

thumbnail icon: New Norah Jones - "Chasing Pirates"

Buttery smooth Living Room darling Norah Jones has done many things in the years since releasing her Grammy-magnet debut Come Away With Me to suggest she wanted to be more than just the artist who puts out records the whole family can agree upon during holiday reunions -- Arcade Fire covers and collabs with indie reggaeheads, comedic and conscious rappers amongst them. On paper, Jones's forthcoming The Fall LP is her biggest step away from triple-A banality yet: co-writing songs with Will Sheff and Ryan Adams (this one is a NoJo solo credit, though), enlisting Thom's new BFF Joey Waronker and most of the studio crew behind Tom Waits's Mule Variations for the set. Granted, Jones's silken voicebox is diametrically opposed to Tom's gravely throatpit, but the warm, stately lock of the keyboard-and-drum groove driving lead single "Chasing Pirates" actually could recall some of Mule's more mellowed and down the middle production, ala that album's balladic "Come On Up To The House." As such it's a little shift for Norah, and a welcome one. (Warning: this track will autostart upon clicking...)

The Fall is out 11/17 via Blue Note. For more, try this take on "Young Blood" from the Apple conference.

Still sounds like a good ole Norah Jones record to me. Her voice is the essence of her signature sound. So whether or not she's playing guitar or piano or just singing it still has that dreamy feel to it. "Chasing Pirates" is a dreamy and soft song. Simply beautiful.

Classy. What are the odds that someone of your literary genius wouldn't understand when to use an apostrophe?

Well, if by "fuck" you mean fuck and by "yourself" you mean your mom, then the answer is right now.

Wow Stereogum, all the way up to 9 comments today. Congrats. That has to be a record of some kind. Remember the halcyon days of hundreds of comments. I barely do either.

Norah Jones would kick your ass if she wanted to. She'd pick you up by your balls and throw you into a human-sized blender. My guess: she'd drink the fleshy smoothie in front your family too.

I think I am officially part of the crowd that is embarrassed to have her first album on my iPod. http://www.theawesometrain.blogspot.com/

Why is it the worst crime ever that she made some inoffensive records that appealed to AARP members? Jeez. She's got a great voice, interesting taste and has managed not to be horrible corrupted by her success. And ok fine, she's cute.

I have all 3 of her previous albums and I thoroughly enjoy them. As one commentator has said, there is a dreamy quality to those albums but, after hearing "Chasing Pirates", she is definitely more upbeat than dreamy. She has awoken and walked a completely different path to create this. Perhaps it has been born of new friendships, new attitudes or just the evolution of her skillful talent. If the rest of the album builds on the promise of this single, then I will be one of the first to purchase it next month

Just heard this and it makes me long for the 60's. What a great rhythm track but wasted with a useless lyric and vocal performance. Motown would have 'killed' with that rhythm track.
