New Tyondai Braxton - "Uffe's Woodshop"

thubmnail icon: New Tyondai Braxton - "Uffe's Woodshop"

Earlier today I claimed Air's "Do The Joy" has a cartoon vibe to it, but it's nothing at all like this frantically paced track from Battles vocalizer, etc., Tyondai Braxton's forthcoming self-produced solo release, Central Market. According to the official notes on "Uffe's Woodshop," the sounds you're hearing are "vocals/whistling, kazoos, violins, violas, synths, electronics, piano, 6 guitars, bass and drums/percussion." The results? Raymond Scott colliding with Tortoise, Glenn Branca, and some very cinematic strings. If feels very much like the part of something bigger, so it'll be interesting to see how Central Market develops. For now, it's exciting enough seeing another "indie" associated songwriter spread his wings.

The tracklist:

01 "Opening Bell"
02 "Uffe's Woodshop"
03 "The Duck and the Butcher"
04 "Platinum Rows"
05 "Unfurling"
06 "J. City"
07 "Dead Strings"

Central Market is out 9/15 via Warp. Braxton also commissioned a piece for Bang On A Can that premieres 8/5 as part of the Lincoln Center Of Our Doors 2009 series. Bang On A Can will also be performing commissions by Goran Bregovic and Stew and Heidi Rodewald along with arrangements of works by Björk, Meshuggah (!), Charles Mingus, Colon Nancarrow, and Frank Zappa.

I love this, but I wish I didn't read the title as "Uffie's Workshop" every time

OH YEAH! so exciting to see an "indie" songwriter spread his wings! you sure you didn't mean a royal music family dynasty expanding to further reaches of the sonic universe?

This needs more listens in context on better speakers. My initial reaction was negative, and that will probably be the common reception.

This is pretty BIG music, reminds me of Zappa alot. I was a fan of his first solo album, it is raw and dirty compared to this. IDK, loved that first solo joint and ALL the Battles stuff, but "cartoon music" is fitting...and I am not grooving on it. sorta bummed.

this shit is unreal...
i have dreams, sometimes, that someone will make music that sounds this beautiful and devastatingly disorienting.

i wanna be on whatever trip tyondai's on.

p.s. also, thanks for showing me extra life, t.b.!

Got a good listen at the Le Poisson Rouge listening party! Uffe's (a Danish name?) Woodshop is only a morsel to what the entire record, "Central Market", is all about. "Platinum Rows" (what a name!!!) took me for a wild ride into the universe unknown. Tyondai hasnt just spread his wings, he's spread them AND has embraced us into a new path of music!!!! This new music is so inviting to me, honest, flamboyant, it has this undeniable strength. damn man. he is on some other shit. I can see the progression from History that has no effect....... and since that was his last solo venture (2002??) I can see how he might have gone in this direction. I heard he still "composed" this new stuff through his original setup of a million pedals. what I would do to be this guy. i cant imagine what this album will do to music as a whole, in september......fucking awesome.most exciting thing happening this summer for me, no doubt. tnx for the inspiration Tyondai.
