New Vivian Girls - "The End," "Can't Get Over You"

"When I'm Gone," the first song we heard from Vivian Girls' forthcoming sophomore album Everything Goes Wrong, found the trio digging into a denser sound with additional vocal polish in those still decidedly unpolished three-part harmonies. Two additional samples of the new stuff -- the clattering, dusky "The End" and the sweeter "Can't Get Over You" -- are streaming at MySpace. Both make a nice racket.
Everything Goes Wrong is out 9/8 via In the Red.

The guitar solo in "The end" made me smile: it was really sweet and unexpected for a band that usually sounds sweet but predictable.

"Can't Get Over You" is the best pure pop song I've heard in ages. It sounds truly timeless and shows off the strengths of this band perfectly. I really like Everything Goes Wrong - it's a solid sophomore record from a band growing increasingly confident in what they do. It would be a shame for people to write it off just because of some silly interview from a while back.

Are we listening to the same songs? They are horrible! Love that Kickball Katy!!!

Surprisingly good. Maybe when/if the usual clickety shitstorm that comes with each Vivian Girls post gets kicked up, some others might be pleasantly surprised too.
But "Tell the World" had duped me into getting the first release, so I'm going to bide my time with this one.

Their new stuff sounds like if Hole amputated their grunge limb and replaced it with a garage rock limb. Of course, I mean early Hole. And of course I mean this as a compliment.

all of their song sound boringly the same. same beat, same vocals, same same. just go buy a SHAGGS record -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyDwIYXOE7g

Pitchfork told me these girls aren't good anymore so I'm going to trust their decision.

My god this has to be a joke. Please. Stop. Please. Please stop making this music, and for god's sake please stop writing about it.

Punk / Shoegaze / Surf
interesting. i don't find their music very "punk", "shoegaze" or "surf" like at all. and yet, right upon that very page, that's what it says. too bad. this is what kids are listening to these days. all talk and no walk.

I can't wait to rock these jams on the way to Applebee's to hit on girls this weekend with my co-workers.

PS I feel no shame about that reference cause this band sucks and it's the most notable thing they will ever do as far as I'm concerned.

If they weren't from Brooklyn they would be a crappy local band somewhere who turned out "pop songs" that aren't at all catchy. Quick, someone hum a little bit of one! Oh, wait, you can't. These are better than the debut insofar as the recording is not a total joke, but that's about it. Also: is it shoegaze just because they strum the guitar a lot?
