New Weezer (Feat. Lil Wayne) - "Can't Stop Partying"
Rivers debuted this one at one of our Decomposed sessions, alongside co-writer Jermaine Dupri. There was a loose jamboree-chant goofiness to the track in that early iteration. And then news broke that Weezer would be joined by Weezy on the album's Raditude version. So many of those words would seem so bizarre to a =w= fan in the Pinkerton era; at this point, those same fans are either watching through cracked fingers as Cuomo keeps pushing his skewed populism to its illogical extremes, or they just let Rivers run free from their minds long ago. Or, I guess, they are fans of the slowly Jonas Bro morphing Weezer and are super incredibly psyched about everything Raditude related, from its track names and Kenny G live collabs on up. But to the point: Here's the Polow Da Don-produced "Can't Stop Partying," now less a jamboree, more a sorta morose paean to Patrón with a lazy Weezy verse. For you:

Sorry, but the album has leaked and its complete garbage. Its the absolute worst album Weezer has done, which is a whole new low for them. All the tracks they've released so far are misleading because the rest of the album sounds like Jonas Brothers + Katy Perry + pick any awful pop punk emo band. The production and generic songwriting is made for pop FM radio stations.
Remember when Liz Phair made that Avril Lavigne sounding album? Weezer just did the same thing, and if it were up to me, I'd put Raditude in the 0.0 club on Pitchfork.

I used to be one of the 'special-ones' who had "good taste" in music too. Constantly shiting on any FM pop etc... simply to boost my own sense of being so great and full of wonderful, real and rare taste in music. Then I realized how stupid and limiting I was being and that I actually secretly liked some of the shit I was poo-pooing on(Ha. you know what I'm talking about...come on now...admit it).
Now, I just listen to and enjoy whatever sounds good to my heart at the time...whatever puts a kick in my step. I discard all the stupid superficial labels and notions about what is "tasteful" or "sold-out" or "not sold-out" or "indie" or whatever. Now I just enjoy whatever sounds good to me at that time. In my opinion, it's much more fun this way. Who cares about both extremes of being "sold-out" or "pure." -don't be a sucker...don't buy into either of the games...just enjoy the music that hits you and leave the rest alone.
Besides...in his personal life, Rivers is one of the least "sold out" human beings you'd ever meet. dude does hardcore 45-day vipassana retreats for christ sake. He's allowed to do whatever he wants musically.

No, this is throwaway pop. For quality pop, see Outkast's "Hey Ya!", anything by Robyn, The Clash's "Train in Vain", Pheonix's "1901", The Killers "Mr. Brightside" and dare I say it? Animal Collective's "My Girls." You see, there's a huge difference between writing a hook for the sake of an easy grab and writing a hook that's original, has redeeming value to it and changes the way pop music is made. Weezer falls into the latter.

I don't understand some of you guys. Weezer is a fun band, a funny band. They've always been -- see: Surf Wax America, In the Garage, Pink Triangle, Buddy Holly, etc. Ok, so this album has a little (or maybe a lot!) more of a light-hearted tone than their others. So what! It's silly, it's catchy, enjoy it (this goes for the rest of the album too). This song is a pastiche and it's funny, relax. Or you could keep being super alternative indie snobs, that's fun too.

In reference to his Timbaland-produced album, someone asked Chris Cornell what he'd say to people who hated it. He answered that he's not taking the old albums away from you. You can still listen to them. If you don't like this one, maybe you'll like the next one. Excluding the "maybe you'll like the next one" bit, I try to remember this line of thinking when it comes to Weezer. I threw Pinkerton on in the car this morning. Their recent efforts horrify me, but at least they've given us a couple of good albums. I'm thankful for that.

When I first heard that Weezer was coming out with a new album, I was crazy excited. Their albums have all made their way on to my most played obsession at some point or another. Be it the early work or the more recent albums, it all maintains a certain level of fun and mockery that I've come to love about them. I get that artists grow and sounds change, but this is almost too much for me personally. I know that if I want to hear the Weezer that played Pinkerton, its only a matter of popping it in the CD player. But part of me will always wish I could hear new songs with that feel. I have to say I love the first single "If You're Wondering..." but I mean, Lil Wayne... really? I like the mockery of the idea, but not the result. The way Rivers said "Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the charts, Maybe if I work with him I could perfect the art".... it was laughable to imagine the two collaborating because it was such an unlikely pairing. From what I've heard, this album is not what we've come to expect, but I wont make a judgement until I've heard it start to finish. What is there to lose in giving it a shot? Regardless of this song, they are still a great band, and great performers.

That's what a true fan is. (Radiohead fans out there will agree). Anyway, in my opinion, if you don't get it, you don't deserve to be a fan.
