Newer New Strokes - "On the Other Side"

Now this sounds more like classic Strokes. Honestly, what's with all the leaking? Put your guesses in the comments.

The Strokes - "On The Other Side" (Stereogum <3 RIAA)

(Not that I mind the leaking...thanks, "The Weenstah")

The leaks will stop as of Friday night/Saturday morning. Why? They will because all of the songs that have been leaked will be played at the shows in South America Friday/Saturday. The band wanted the produced/album versions to be the "First Impressions.." of the songs that the public-at-large had of the album (i.e not shoddy bootlegs).

Is it me or is the bass mixed in a really pronounced way on this tune? The drums are also much more prominent compared to the first two records. I like the tune after a couple of listens, but all the new stuff is hard to get a grasp of, to say the least.

ew, '15 minutes of pain' went down like one of those revolting cough sweets. currently liking three out of the four.

in my mp3 blog newbieness i thought maybe 'juicebox' was leaked deliberately for the hype and all that, but because most folk couldn't stand it 'you only live once' was sent out to keep people happy. now i just can't be bothered.

Man just complete shit...really nobody should defend this crap as decent. The music sounds like a computer refil loop of "2002 nu-garage". Truly, I would rather listen to "(Take me to) The Other Side" by Aerosmith at least that was a fucking song...not this horrid mess.

The Strokes whole schtick of lets jam, with the same piercing guitar notes, stick the parts in Pro Tools to create something thats 4 minutes, and have our little shit "singer" work his magic over it is sooo awesome!

This song just drags while he whines about how jaded he is. How could a band go from an album loaded with great pop hooks to making such boring songs?

They went from being a dance band, to soundtracking suicides.

first two songs were "okay" the third sound was so bad that i half think it is a fake leak and this one one is okay. why is the strokes held up as the torch bearer of "new music" i will never know. they have always come off as a evil a&r guy's frankenstine creation to capitalize on the indie rock/college music underground. i liked the first album's smiths-like guitar chords, but these songs for the most part seem lazy and uninspired.

did the strokes not kick start this whole 'indie -is-cool' mainstream shit? would we have modest mouse playing O.C. without them? Would we have O.C.? would death cab have been signed to a major? the strokes are responsible for the current (or what was current, as indie hipster fucks change every 3 months cause of the demand to stay fresh) music interest in 'indie' rock.

how many of you gripers praised their debut? 'the saviours of rock' i love the strokes, can't you tell by my tight jeans and unkept hair? now you all turncoat because they aint fresh no mo'.

i love 'em. always will. they saved everyone of the horrors of nu-metal

I never thought the Strokes were the saviors of anything, I just loved Is This It and liked Room on Fire a lot. So far I'm not liking what I'm hearing from the new one overall, but who knows how the album as a whole will turn out.

I agree with Frank, I really like "You Only Live Once." "Juicebox" and "15 Minutes" are pretty awful, and this new one is ok (the drums and bass bother me now, too artificial sounding in a bad way).

Is there any semi-official word on whether "Juicebox" is actually the lead single?

Just 'cause The Strokes kick-started the "new rock" revolution doesn't mean they have a free pass to put out anything they want and we have to like it. I like The Strokes and liked both records, but part of being a fan is also looking at their work with a critical eye and not necessarily liking everything blindly. In my opinion "15 Minutes of Pain" is horrible and sub par with their other stuff. "Juicebox" is average and "You Only Live Once" one of their better ones. Liking a band doesn't mean you have to accept everything they put out.

If this song was on another strokes record it would have a killer chorus (not a remarkably generic sounding one which just follows the fucking bass melody). The verse is fine, good in fact. But a shitty chorus. Juicebox did have a good chorus (but sounds bad in most other respects) so it scares me that maybe it weas seriously realeased first because its the only decent chorus on the whole album.

Incidentally, you could cut and paste my take on "other side" and cross apply it to "you only live once". I already wrote on the "15 minutes" thread...

frohicky, arctic monkeys are apparently set for a number one in the uk chart on sunday with their debut single. i know the uk top 40 is a joke these days, but that's still pretty impressive for a guitar band.

long time lurker, first time poster. I actually agree with most of these statements about the strokes saving rock. Sure theyre responsible for the indie hipster trend, but without them wed have to endure Linkin Park, Limp Bizket, Disturbed, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Lifehouse, and Staind. As i recall from 1998-2001 these bands dominated the airwaves and alot people unfortunatly liked them. The Strokes came out in the fall of 2001, the year when Weezer was making a comeback. Shortly in 2002, similar bands to the strokes emerged and eventually started a new trend to kick the ghey outta mainstream nu-metal.

Im loving the new strokes and my favorite song so far is "You only live Once"

The Strokes did not 'kickstart' or 'invent' anything. That is so laughable. They copped their sound from the Velvets and the Stooges, but it never went any deeper than that. All style, no substance. And they did not save us from nu-metal any more than Nirvana saved us from hair metal. Do not shed a tear for the faux 'indie' movement, my darlings. A new corporate distraction will capture yr fancy soon enough.

I'm checking their Rio gig thru TV. They're at their third new song (including the leaked ones). Here're my impressions, quick and dirty:
. Hawaii-Aloha is surf music just like Elvis sounds in Lilo & Stitch soundtrack;
. Automatic Stop is known already, and for me it seems just like an old Strokes song mixed with Julian deep desire to be like those old times crooners;
. You Only Live Once is almost a Talking Heads' cover.

Will talk more when more come up.

"And they did not save us from nu-metal any more than Nirvana saved us from hair metal."

This is one of the worst arguments I've ever heard. I don't actually disagree with your premise (The strokes didn't sell enough records to cause a serious cultural shift- you'd have a better argument with the White Strips) but I've nenver heard anyone deny that Nirvana eradicated hair metal bands basically overnight. Because they did- Hair Metal immediately became un-cool upon Nirvana's arrival, and some metallers still hate them for that.

The Strokes did contribute a lot though to 00s rock as did the White Stripes. But I separate the Strokes and the White Stripes in my head; I can't compare them on the same level (not saying that one is better than the other). And it seems blind to say that they didn't shift the style somewhat. They spawned so many new bands post Is This It that to say they didn't cause but a ripple in the rock world seems wrong to me.

only heard juicebox and this one so far. it was okay...and i can really just wait until the album is released rather than gobbling at crumbs scattered here and there...not sayin' i mind the leaks, but i'll just wait.

confession time! i really didn't start listening to either the first or second releases from the strokes until about four months ago. i couldn't take the overblown hype. i heard "last night" a trillion times, of course, and then "hard to explain" back in 2002/3 and that was it. well, i now see what all the hype was about. of all their releases, there's only maybe two i don't love.

i think we're probably in for a great release from them in jan(?) and these four are just kinda fodder.

IMO,

I'm glad the Strokes are trying new things, new sounds, etc. I loved Is This It AND Room on Fire, but I didn't want them to make another album that sounded a lot or exactly like them.

I think You Only Live Once, On the Other Side, and Razor Blade are all outstanding songs.

Juicebox and 15 Minutes are not nearly as good, but they are still entertaining in parts. Can't wait until the rest of the album comes out (or gets leaked, haha)

You guys can find most of the new songs at rapidshare. Here's my view of the strokes' new material from best to worst:

1. Razor Blade (excellent song, sort of original)
2. You only live once / on the other side (both as good as one another, the guitars sing to the audience rather than play, great songs.
3. Juicebox (could have been number 2 because of the chorus and "you're so cold" area of the song, but gets 3 because of the bass line.
4. 15 minutes of pain (just doesnt have that strokes flair. Didnt like it much at all...

I didnt so much mind the ugliness of juicebox; at least the song had personality, especially on the 49 sec mark. i dont know what to say about "on the other side," other than it sounds like an 80's song bent on sounding gayer than Elton John at a homo-convention. 'He hates himself for hating them. He drinks, he likes them. He drinks more, he hates them more than he did before.' Tell me, what does this have to do with "The Other Side"? I hope this song grows on me like the others.

I have to disagree with most of these reviews, I think all the new songs are amazing. I think the so called "indie" kids are not liking them because they are a little bit of pop in them aka "juicebox". But I think it is a totally under rated song. Never have we heard Julian's voice go that high, and it sounds awesome. Obviously they can't make everybody happy, but they made this cat estatic. Can not wait tell it comes out. Oh, and the next song that leaked that I got was Razorblade.

Razor blade is the best, by miles.
all the other songs kick ass, but im not too fussed on hawaii aloha.
does anyone else think julian sounds like jonny borell in you only live once.
go onto limewire, and type in the album name and a huge list of all the songs comes up.

someone needs to leak this cd, by the looks of it, it sounds soo bad, i liked the early cds but this doesnt seem to want me to put down my money. perhaps if i hear the cd i'll buy it for portable use. otherwise going out and buying it on the day it comes out, you'd be the one of many people listening to it.. yuck.
