New(lywed) Pornographer

Did any of you catch the invite-only Neko Case/Mates Of State show last night? Unless you work for Matador, play for the New Pornographers, or are related to Carl Newman, the answer to that is probably "no." That's 'cause that semi-secret gig was part of a larger party: chief-Porno-in-charge Carl Newman's wedding to Ms. Christy Simpson (five years Carl's junior at 34). So aside from the entire Matador staff and the NP roster, who else made the invite list?

Folks like master of ceremonies Eugene Mirman, a whale-pantalooned David Cross, and, apparently, the New York Times, who provide a sort of recap/review of yesterday's Newman/Simpson nuptials. They even took quotes! Carl talks about love in terms of reality TV, Neko admits to crying during one of the toasts, etc. (Also, Neko fans, she drinks Jägermeister.) So, uhh, head over to NYT for more deets from the wedding/"high-school-party sloppy" ceremony, we guess? Feels sorta creepy, but then, a reporter was invited so it's all above-board info.

Pitchfork's wedding gift to Mr. Newman: A 6.0 for Challengers. Congrats, Carl!

Last week sometimes, methinks. Congrats to the new Mr. and Ms. Newman. And "Challengers" is a great record.

Here's hoping The New Porns sound good on the Letterman show tonight. My guess is My Rights vs. Yours, but I could be wrong.
Congrats to the happy couple and it's off to Best Buy for me tomorrow!

Q: What's worse than having to go to a wedding?

A: Having to go to a hipster wedding.

It would have been great to see Carl perform "Against All Odds" drunk on champagne and cake.

I guess I'm not jaded by previous overexposure to their oeuvre of work, but I think "Challengers" is pretty rad. I have no idea how you actually pronounce oeuvre. Ooo-vruh?

Anyway, the new record. I put it on and people go, "Hey, who is this?" Because it's good.

the new album is great

also, if i ever read a pitchfork review and take it to heart again, i hope i get scurvy. the review pretty much only talks about the dynamics of the album, completely ignoring how great the songs are. fuck 'em.

Carl's Jr. is Hardee's on this side of the country.

A 6.0? You shouldn't have!

I hate to call albums "growers" because it likens said album to a Chia Pet... But once everyone calms down, forgets that they didn't get the Twin Cinema Sequel they were praying for and lets "Challengers" be its own thing, I predict it will take on the mythic proportions of a "Pinkerton".

Lets just hope the band can survive with integrity intact after it!
