Newsflash: Bloggers Like Tapes 'N Tapes

Ex-Spinner Sia Michel knows it was blogs that rendered her former stomping grounds irrelevant so she's taking our collective ego down a notch with this T'NT review in today's New York Times.

"Tapes 'n Tapes is indie rock's latest Internet-driven mini-success story, which is no surprise. This charmingly nerdy quartet is just the kind of band a blogger loves. ... Most important, their work seems humble, as if they aren't quite sure they deserve to be liked. When the record labels came calling, bloggers got to feel good about themselves, as if they had saved nice guys from a sad life of dive bars and bowling alleys."
Ouch. Does this mean Zach Condon wasn't gonna work at Jack In The Box until we linked to his site?! Just kidding. There isn't a Jack In The Box in Albuquerque.

Awww, check out the bitter old party girl. Good news, Sia, the editor job at Spin is about to open up again. I say, go for it!

Idea: Combine Spin and Rolling Stone into one magazine and call it shit on a stick

I bought the latest (Jack White cover) Spin to read on a trip. Worst. Spin. Ever.

I liked it better when it was called Q magazine, but I didn't really like it much then either

I actually think that Sia is the better of the NYT music writers. Kalifah I want to strangle; he/she/it is fucking clueless and ALWAYS will discuss lyrics - however irrelevant this is to say, a performance review. The blogger comment though is right on, isn't it? Some self-gratification HAS to result.

still don't get the hubbub for that tapes crew...not that it's bad, just boring. i've listened to the album a few times, and nothing stuck with me. different strokes i suppose. maybe i'm just getting old, i can't remember the last blog-hyped band i liked that i didn't know of already by other means.

I didn't know Sia Michel washed up at the NYT until I read her Joan Jett live review this morning. She wrote, "The lyrics to 'Androgynous' sounded clunky live, but the fans still loved it" (or something like that), then she quoted said lyrics and, yes, it was THAT "Androgynous," of whose writer--and the meaning of performing it--she seemed to be oblivious.

--Ah! I just double-checked, and it has now been fixed to say "The Replacements' 'Androgynous'." It did not say that earlier. Maybe her editor screwed her over in the first place, but she's still oblivious--if she knew anything about anything, she'd know we love "Androgynous" BECAUSE it's clunky! We love the Replacements BECAUSE they're clunky! We love rock and roll BECAUSE IT'S CLUNKY!

Not Joan Jett, though. She's a street-walkin' cheetah in her bikini and leather pants:

Go back to Manhattan, Sia Michel. Go back to your clean vodka and white cocaine. Brooklyn is too clunky for you.
