Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey have gone from newlyweds to newly over.
E! has confirmed that Simpson filed for divorce Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the end of her two-and-a-half-year marriage to Lachey.
The allegedly rocky state of the camera-friendly twosome's union has consumed tabloids for months, with both parties rumored to have been stepping out with others.
However, up until now, the couple had steadfastly denied the existence of any marital troubles.
The duo even appeared together Monday night in their latest ABC variety special, Nick & Jessica's Tour of Duty, in which they performed for troops stationed in Germany. But it seems the viewing public is as through with Nick and Jessica as the pair is with each other--only 6.2 million tuned in to watch the couple's TV swan song, per Nielsen overnight estimates.
Lachey, 31, and Simpson, 24, wed in 2002, back in the days of B-list status, when Simpson was categorized as a less famous version of Britney Spears, while Lachey toiled in 98 Degrees, a boy band several notches below 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys on the pop food chain.
After the twosome tied the knot, they rocketed to fame virtually overnight on the success of their MTV reality show, Nick and Jessica: Newlyweds, which chronicled the misadventures of their day-to-day lives.
Simpson, in particular, became a reality TV darling, with her tendency to make embarrassing, yet endearing, blunders, such as confusing Chicken of the Sea brand tuna for actual chicken and believing that Buffalo wings were actually made of buffalo.
The "With You" singer enjoyed a sensational rise in record sales as a result of the show's success--her sophomore disc, In This Skin, went from chart also-ran to triple platinum--and landed a role as Daisy Duke in the upcoming Dukes of Hazzard movie.
As his wife enjoyed a meteoric rise in fame, Lachey's career faltered .
His first solo album, SoulO, tanked, and ABC passed on a pilot he shot that costarred Gina Gershon.
Though Lachey eventually landed a reoccurring role on the WB's Charmed, it was clear that, fame-wise, he was living in the shadow of his missus.
Simpson's father, Joe, was reportedly working with Lachey to change that image by developing a new reality series featuring the former boy bander's struggles to sign with a record label. No word on whether the couple's split will affect plans for the show.
Even before the last episode of Newlyweds aired March 30, the couple were spending considerable amounts of time apart with Simpson on location in Louisiana and Lachey later heading to Sweden to record a new album.
Apparently, once the cameras were off, so was the marriage.

I hope the allegations are not true they due make a cute couple. I bought the collection of DVDs on their show. You will notice that the "complete 2nd and 3rd season" is only the 2nd season. Check out mtv.com and the list of episodes we are missing episodes 301-310. Go figure. They rushed to get it out and didn't get us what we paid for. I do hope they don't get divorce. They are now a brand to a certain degree.... It's obvious she's carrying him but she may not be able to carry herself soon.

Okay first of all, Jessica and Nick filed for divorce. It's just not celebrities that file for divorces. It's just that you have to understand when you have pressure to be a celebrity, a lot of factors can go into why they got a divorce in the first place. If you know Nick and Jessica personally and they told you what happened, then you can confirm things. But a lot of people are making stuff up which is plain stupid. A lot of people want to make jokes out of it and make fun and be like "oh it's just another celebrity hoax" but you know what? Until you have gone in their shoes, you can't expect them to be a perfect couple. And we are not clairvoyants. We can't predict if people get a divorce or not. Jessica and Nick are two human beings just like us. They have their problems just like we have our problems. People who are immature just don't understand yet. We can't just say "oh let's not get married, we are going to get a divorce anyway." There's no faith in that. Even if you get a divorce, you still enjoyed those times instead of missing out on something. I believe Jessica and Nick still love each other very much. If you think overwise, it doesn't matter, because there's going to be people tearing them down anyway.
