Nine Inch Nails Go Completely Label Free
Seems like it's a good week for this sort of thing, doesn't it? Trent just posted this on nin.com (via ninhotline.net):
Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed. All of this in case you weren't sure if he was kidding about that "steal my stuff" speech in Australia last month. You'd think this was a good thing, but just remember Trent's preferred method of distribution this year (probably not actual image). Seems like a good thing, but really it could just be shitty (hey, rimshot).

The question is: does Trent still have the type of rabid, loyal fanbase that will make it work for him... or is he going to chase this chuck wagon into the kitchen cabinet and bonk his head?

Maybe he has been holding out on his "good stuff" since Downward Spiral, waiting for the end of the contract. You know...people can put up with crap for 13 years right?

Dw Dunphy or "DwD,"
There is no reason to sign every single post you make. In fact, there's no point to signing any of them as the internet has graciously given us user names to conveniently inform others to whom each post belongs. I had to say something after seeing too many of your transgressions elsewhere on Stereogum.

note to trent: just cause radiohead gets a ton of press from the no-label release doesn't mean you have to jump on the bandwagon too.

Reznor's been alluding to ending his relationship with Interscope since last millennium. Of course, some people will still accuse him of "jumping on a bandwagon."

Ohh boy I can't wait to play more internet puzzle games for clues and tips about his new record. I am gonna put my Hardy Boys cap on now! He is crying worse than Billy Corgan these days.

Now that more and more huge bands (Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead) break away from major labels, where's the music business going? I created a poll about it on pollsb - you're all welcome to vote (click on my name).

Radiohead is still in talks to sign with a label and have already said "In Rainbows" will be released to retail in 2008. Trent is going label free. Radiohead is going back to a label. How is he bandwagon jumping?

"Trent is going label free."
He'll have to link up with someone for the production and distribution of physical product.
