I hate to give AOL credit, but they're doing a great job. The "World Feed" on AOL is what MTV should be doing. It's cool to be able to switch from one venue to the other. So far Coldplay and Madonna have been my faves with U2 being the biggest flop thusfar.

Trust me, they MUST'VE come a long way since 1985 and they were only contending with 2 concerts, not 5 or 6. They showed Martha Quinn singing along more than the actual bands and the shots of Marc Goodman sitting cross legged in short shorts was Xrated. Yikes. the Live Aid dvd couldn't show half of the good stuff that happened because the coverage was so awful.

Well, the good old BBC just showed every second of every act from hyde park throughout the whole day, obviously with no adverts, and they are now embarking on covering the Philly show too, makes paying the licence fee all worth while... (if anyone actually pays it that is... not sure i know too many people who do).
And if you have BBC digital tv you can pick any uninterupted coverage from the 8,9,10...? venues around the world.
Oh and Scissor Sisters ruled, along with an amazing rough as fuck version of Helter Skelter by Macca.

Honey, I WAS THERE AND IT WAS SUPERB! :) Michael Stipe was delicious as usual, Pete Doherty joined Elton John in "Children of the Revolution" (stunning makeup!), and Richard Ashcroft played "Bittersweet Symphony" together with Coldplay. The Velvet Revolver was amazing and The Scissor Sisters did a new song!! It does not get much better than this in one's lifetime! Only wish The Killers played more than one song! Hell, they even let Snow Patrol play two. (Is there no justice in this world?) Brad Pitt, Bill Gates, David Beckham and the lads from Little Britain are all there to introduce the acts. Totally wiped out now from dancing and singing all day -- off to bed, so hope you all enjoyed the show!

Actually, the Live Aid DVD was limited because Geldolf told all of the carriers (BBC, ABC, MTV) to destroy their footage after the show was over. (Geldolf promised the bands that the show wouldn't be archived, since most of the bands knew their performances would be sub-par granted the technical limitations.) The BBC and MTV largely ignored him, but ABC followed suit.

I was in Philly. Rob Thomas was horrible. Highlights included Will Smith doing Summertime. Yeah, Will Smith was fun. Maron 5 covered Neil Young. Jay Z gave the best actual performance imo. Stevie Wonder was cool, but no real finale. Man, whose dick did Rob Thomas Suck? Beyonce is hot.

I fully understand MTV's desire to remind viewers at regular intervals exactly what the purpose of the concert series is. You know what would help inform viewers while not cutting off legendary performances and subjecting millions to the babbling brook that is Rachel Perry? A fucking TICKERTAPE. If it works for CNN, it'll work for you too, assholes. It'd probably have a better personality than your VJs anyway.
And can we take a second to stop complaining about rich celebrities taking time out of their day to play a benefit concert? Because last I checked, you're the one sitting on your ass watching television. Paul McCartney probably opted out of a 10,000 dollar manicure today so he could play a concert for free, and you can't do anything but complain about it? Christ.

This concert just shows that Coldplay is not a stadium/anthemic band. U2 is, proving it both in '85 and now. Queen perfected it in '85 too. Make sure you go to the Paris feed, because Muse rocks hard. We haven't seen them in giant US stadiums yet, but I bet it won't be long. Too bad no one else saw them outside of France.

All you that didn't turn off your TV's and run to AOL's webcast really missed out. With Aol I caught all the shows, it was honestly the most impressive webcast I've witnessed. Highlights from some of the shows, by J.Green:
London: Madonna was impressive, aside from the Kabbalah background I really enjoyed her set. Robbie Williams absolutely turned the entire park out. I never really liked him before, but man does he know how put on a show. Razorlight was not bad. The Who were kind of disapointing, bland I found. Killers should have been allowed more then one song, as they killed it. Pink Floyd was quite impressive although at times it was apparent their voices are not what they used to be.
Philadelphia: Linkin Park and Jay Z stood out. Linkin Park played hard, and Jay showed up big. Will Smith was great on Summertime. Wasn't too impressed Stevie Wonder too be honest.
Toronto: Disapointing except for the Neil Young finally. It sounded a little contrived but I enjoyed it. The hip played well , as did Blue Rodeo, but some of the of the other performers were subpar to say the least. Celine Dion by satellite, ugh.
Germany: Only caught the Green Day set. Their cover of Queen just sounded weird. Plus it's kind of out of place to be shouting "We are the Champions" at a benefit concert, kind of kicking them when their down, no?
Paris: Only caught the Craig David bit. Seemed a little cheesy, and I don't think the crowd was very into him. Did high energy songs unplugged which is nice at a bar, but less effective when you need to entertain 2 hundred thousand people.
Rome: Appreciated some of the Italian singers, but Duran Duran just doesn't do it for me.
Over all thought the concerts were just amazing, with the London one just blowing everyone else out of the water. I am really impressed how smooth the show went. Those are my opinions, but I'd like to end this comment with a question; did anyone else find it kind of unsettling that these shows were being put on at substantial cost, and no money at all was even atttempted to be raised?

damn it! there was some great (unfamiliar) alternative rock band on the ROME stage yesterday, but no one said who they were. Anybody know where to get the schedule for the ROME shows from yesterday? Whoever that band was were shockingly great!
Pink Floyd was incredible (I almost cried cuz Roger Waters almost cried - during 'Wish You Were Here').
Madonna was great, up until the end of 'Ray of Light.' Will somebody tell here she CAN'T SING those long HIGH NOTES at the end of the song - I had to cover my ears she was so out of tune!!
And by the way, U2 was great as usual - not a "FLOP" as some idiot said earlier.

the best coverage was by far AOL, where you could pick which city you wanted without annoying interruptions and commercials. i thought pink floyd's performance was definitely one of the best of all the shows. it was good to see them hugging at the end of the set.

The AOL coverage was good for a while until my Safari browser couldn't handle all the switching from location to location and finally went on the fritz.
DL'd the Pink Floyd performance later on and was quite impressed. Gilmour has turned into an old blues man. And he clearly still has the guitar chops. It's interesting to see how it has become his band, where Waters had once dominated. Even Gilmour's singing clearly surpasses Waters. But it was nice to see Roger so gracious, and seemingly happy. There is a genuine affection among the band members. Could they possibly record together again and/or tour? That might be asking too much.
But they can still rock - even if it was a greatest hits set. Caught a shot of Bono watching the Floyd. It was the pupil at the foot of the teacher.

London ruled by far: U2 one that song is has great lyrics, Coldplay and Rich Ashcroft,Pink Floyd wow that gave me goosebumps, Madonna come one she turned it out with Like A Prayer that was great!!!!!, Scissor Sisters, The Killers, Sir Paul, Philly:, Black Eyed Peas with the Marley family "Get up Stand Up", Germany: Green Day was o.k. with Amercian Idiot but the song is like over and done with already, A-Ha, Take on me come on the 80"s, Tokoyo:Bjork "All IS Full of Love", great.Everything else sucked. I was very sad That Annie Lenox performence was very Dull. The Finale at london with "Hey Jude" was great I was just annoyed that not everyone stayed behind to sing it. I mean if you lasted that long to perform all day might as well tough it out and sing at the end. Also Chris Martin daughter is a doll. MTV Latin America did a very good job here.
They didn't cut anything, it was an ads-free broadcast (which is EXTREMELY unusual on MTV) and there wasn't any stupid VJ talking bullshit like MTV USA did. I think that the "version" of MTV Latin America was the most similar to the AOL one.
BTW, I laughed my ass off with Keane yelling at the audience at the beginning of his performance. Yay!

Best: Reunited Pink Floyd, that was just freakin amazing! It was worth sitting through all the crap to hear them. I wish I had seen Neil Young I always think he is amazing. Green Day the one song I saw was awsome. Velvet Revlover, Weiland was channeling Freddy Mercury.

I agree the coverage on tv was horrible! I don't get why they pretty much didn't even show anything live as it was happening. It was on all day long there was no reason why they couldn't go from place to place and show a VARIETY of music so that all fans of music got to see something they liked! They kept showing the same stuff all day, I think I saw that horrible Queen cover from GreenDay about 8 times! Muse in Paris were awesome! There was even an article in the NY Post on Friday saying that they were the band to watch because they put on an amazing live show but of course MTV and VH1 would never put anyone like that on their channels. It was definately so much better to watch on the computer!

If you go to the BBC webpage there are two very funny interviews with Mariah Carey and Madonna.
In the Mariah Carey interview the interviewer asks her if she has ever seen the Who live and she says no and then he asks her what her favorite Pink Floyd song is and she pauses and someone in her group yells out Dark Side of the moon and then after five minutes she says Another Brick in the Wall is her favorite, I'm sure her PR person was the one who yelled out DSOTM and the whispered in her ear Another Brick in The Wall.
In the Madonna one the interviewer asks if she has ever been to Africa and Madonna says no but she knows all about the causes that effect Africa from Bill Clinton and Angelina Jolie.

2. Freeing up money in these African countries budgets allows for monies to be used for education, infrastructure, and health concerns(drugs for AIDS, malaria, etc.)
3. More will live who are educated, treated, and given a f%cking chance in life.

Paris Hilton was there in London along with Kim Stewart. I think its a great idea and I wish that it would bring attention to the G8 Conference about ending poverty and I know there are artists who were on the bill and the celebs who are commited to this cause and it seemed as if they were there for all the right reasons i.e Roger Waters, Bono, Paul McCartney, Angelina Jolie, Natalie Portman, The Marley's, Neil Young etc all. But there were some i.e Mariah Carey, Madonna, Paris for the PR to make themselves look like good people.

I was at the London concert in Hyde Park. Truely amazing. U2 and Sir Paul McCartney opened the day with a brilliant first ever live performance of Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Pink Floyd were every bit as amazing as I expected them to be showing they've still got that edge to them that seperates them from the rest.
Robbie Williams tore the place down with an energetic 4-song set including an emotional crowd-warmer 'Feel'.
I thought The Who were fairly average but still enjoyed their set. The same goes for Coldplay and Travis.
I'm not huge fans of Madonna, Razorlight or Keane, but I thought they played pretty good sets. Sting was of course one of the highlights of the day.
There were many acts playing London's Hyde Park that usually I'm not a huge fan of, but on saturday I loved them all. Every single band up on that stage was playing for a very good cause, and every single one seemed really "into" it if you know what I mean. Everyone enjoyed a really fantastic day.
No-one's yet said anything about the speeches made by several people on the stage. I thought Bob Geldof's speech which included the video of starving children in Africa was extremely well put. Also I thought Will Smith's "Every three seconds" speech in Philadelphia was very well put. It certainly put the realization of the amount of people dieing in Africa, into my mind.

I apologize for what I said three messages up about "Prank Floyd". I wasn't away that Gilmour was the lead singer for DSotM and many other songs. I've since been studying the band a lot more and have learned a lot about them and my respect for them all has grown a great deal. I like Waters' voice but Gilmour had a great voice also, along with Wright, since their voices were often mixed on the recordings.
