Not To Mention The Fendi Kippot

Eliza and I were reading Bar Mitzvah Disco last night and laughing our asses off.

My Bar Mitzvah was actually a B'Nai Mitzvah: I shared the party with my one-year-older sister because my parents said it would be cheaper. Entertainment was provided by EJM (as opposed to Hart to Hart, the competing Long Island DJ crew). As much as I would've liked the Beastie Boys to rap my Haftorah portion, the event was nothing like Elizabeth Brooks' Bat Mitzvah last weekend. Daily News reports...

For his daughter's coming-of-age celebration last weekend, multimillionaire Long Island defense contractor David H. Brooks booked two floors of the Rainbow Room, hauled in concert-ready equipment, built a stage, installed special carpeting, outfitted the space with Jumbotrons and arranged command performances by everyone from 50 Cent to Tom Petty to Aerosmith. ... Also on the bill were The Eagles' Don Henley and Joe Walsh performing with Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks; DJ AM (Nicole Richie's fiance); rap diva Ciara and, sadly perhaps (except that he received an estimated $250,000 for the job), Kenny G blowing on his soprano sax as more than 300 guests strolled and chatted into their pre-dinner cocktails.
I remember one of my classmates had Keith Hernandez sign autographs at his Bar Mitzvah; we were all very impressed. Anyway, Aerosmith apparently got $2 million for Brooks' shindig. (Yes, Clap Your Hands turned them down, ha ha.) Blogger Susie Felber has some behind-the-scenes info, but no word on whether Fiddy covered Ottowan.

Ottawan - "Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart)" (MP3)

I can't believe (A) I was just able to find that song, (B) there are 999 more you can download from the page if you just save as .mp3 instead of .jpg. Enjoy.

UPDATE: Photos! (Via Gawker.)

We gon' sip Bacardi like it's your Bat Mitzvah...

I don't know what the criteria was, but that was not the top 1000 songs of the last 30 years. Some decent songs, nonetheless (and a whole load of crap).

Okay, I give - stupid Windows (XP) won't let me initially save the files as anything but jpgs. And I can't figure out how to change it after the fact. Am I being stupid??

Wow. My college roommate and current B.F.F. was always yakking about that "Hands Up" song, when she wasn't showing off her own Bar Mitvah party pics with horrendous perm and all...

Anyway, every time I would tell her I'd never heard it and NO, we never play it at Holy Communion parties, she'd look at me like I was crazy. I guess while Jewbaca was raising her hands to the sky, us Catholics were busy Electric Sliding in a hall in Jersey.

Thanks for making sense of it all.

Hmm, interesting that this "DJ Pirate" who composed the 1000-song list, for whatever reasons of background or proclivities, made a large portion of the list from german pop. Now, I'm actually a fan of some rather eclectic types of german music myself. But when german goes pop, it goes pop . . . and by "pop" I mean "Mein Gott, kein mehr Hasselhoff, bitte! Es brennt!!" assuming my german hasn't degenerated too much. (what I'm trying to say, naturally, is "my god, no more Hasselhoff, please! It burns...")

Kimberly: well, the normal geek response is "go use firefox!", heh, and that would allow you to set it more easily to let you rename them before downloading; but naturally there are other ways. To rename the files after you've saved them: while viewing the folder that you save the .jpg's into, click on "tools" on the menu at the top and choose "folder options", which should be at the bottom of the drop-down list. Then go into "view" and look for the option "Hide extensions for known file types". If I'm guessing your issue right, that should be checkmarked; uncheckmark it, hit apply and voila, you should now see the .jpg part of the filenames. Just go ahead and rename the files to .mp3. (If that doesn't work, just go ahead and mention such, and I'm sure at least some kind soul here will be willing to help further).
