Obama's iPod Loves Him Back

thumbnail icon: Obama's iPod Loves Him Back

Another sign that Barack Obama is cooler than you: His iPod endorses him for president. (A good chunk of it, anyway.) The AP previews the next issue of Rolling Stone, which places Barack on its cover (again) and delves into the critical issues, relating not to the content of his character, but to the content of his iTunes. Here's a detailing of the playlist that's courting your vote:

  • The Rolling Stones (favorite song: "Gimme Shelter")
  • Stevie Wonder (Barack's musical hero)
  • Earth Wind & Fire
  • Elton John
  • Miles Davis
  • John Coltrane
  • Charlie Parker
  • Bob Dylan (30 songs, including Blood On The Tracks)
  • Bruce Springsteen

No ScarJo, but their relationship has been clarified, so that's not surprising. His favorite tune right now is Dylan's "Maggie's Farm," which works out because Dylan's favorite presidential candidate right now is him. Says Obama: "I've got to say, having both Dylan and Bruce Springsteen say kind words about you is pretty remarkable. Those guys are icons." He likes hip hop too, with some qualification:

"I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics," he said, "but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music."

Misogyny, materialism. Didn't hear you say anything about delicious asses and interminable basketball feuds though, Barack, which I take to mean Summer Jam '08 candidate "Kobe How My Ass Taste" is still on the table. Great news.

NO.
HE'S.
NOT.

Don't get it twisted. After he gets elected all of this hype will be forgotten, we'll go back to our lives, expect "HIM" to fix everything, and be subjected to "compromises" he'll say was made " 'FOR' the sake of the American people" when it was really made AT our sake. As a independent, I 'll probably vote for him by default but I can't help but be convinced that the support and subsequent rallying from young voters for Obama was more strategy than "doing the right thing", so to speak.

Oh man, you're totally right! While the whole country is going to hell with his vague policies, having the Stones in the background will be perfect! What a stupid (yet hilarious) comment Jerry. Since when did music taste become something that even matters in politics? Oh wait, it doesn't. "Gimme Shelter," on a side note, is probably my favorite Rolling Stones song too though.

Btw... anyone who thinks that this guy just randomly decided to share his ipod playlist is naive. For all we know, he's never even heard some of these songs. When a presidential campaign is in full swing, you can bet that a candidate's every move is approved by advisers. Presidents are marketed with the same tactics that are used to push products on consumers, so you can be certain that every magazine article Obama participates in was carefully chosen to boost his credibility and to bolster his contrived"man of the people" image. Anyone who thinks this is a "conspiracy theory" needs to learn a thing or two about the psychology employed in everyday corporate marketing.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but how do we know that Obama knows, much less likes, any of those artists/songs? Just like Steve said, everything about a campaign is carefully plotted. Another stupid comment.

McCain will do anything to get anyone's vote, there's not a sincere bone in his body. When he's in Oregon, he's talking about energy conservation. But then two days later he's talking about off shore drilling. And then the next day he whines because Obama wont do public financing, which means McCain will be trounced. His staff decides to call Obama a "flipflopper" when McCain that same day changed his stance on off shore drilling. He wont vote for a GI bill that will give more money to veterans. He spouts off in his stupid ads about "hating war" yet wants to keep us in Iraq for god knows how long. Getting american troops out of Iraq "isn't very important", says McCain. He changed his stance TWICE regarding the Enron loop-hole which has led to speculators deciding that we pay 4 bucks a gallon for gas.

But yeah, don't vote for Obama. Vote for the "maverick", John McCain.

honestly, I think a lot of people will be disappointed by Barack Obama once you really get to know him. He's got the old style Chicago politics in him and he's ditched a lot of his old friends in order to gain mainstream attention and media love. The way he just reniged on his campaign financing pledge is one example. I don't know what it is but white people are letting their guilt for slavery/segregation blind them to the realities of Obama. you people are too effing naive when it comes to politics. anyone who promises "change" is a wolf in dsiguise.

I do pay lots of attention to 'what's really going on in the world,' and I'll still happily vote for Obama, no matter what is on his iPod. While I don't agree with him all of the time, and I wish he would get a little more specific with certain policy proposals, a foreign policy based on avoiding war is infinitely preferable to what McCain espouses, and we need massive investments in health care, education, infrastructure, and energy, not to mention a complete overhaul of the Justice Dept. McCain will do nothing but continue to cut taxes for the top 1% and continue the war indefinitely.
But it is a decent playlist, if you like that sort of thing.

and honestly, why does anyone "deserve" to be taxed more or less? most of the time people with money depend less on government handouts anyway, so it would appear that they "deserve" some slack, yes?

If Stereogum has posts like this, it's going to become a political debate, and there's nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is telling people with differing points of view to shove-off.
