of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping Collection

thumbnail icon: of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping Collection

If "Id Engager" didn't engage you, maybe Skeletal Lamping's extensive packaging will do the trick: of Montreal are releasing the collection in seven formats, more or less allowing fans to choose-their-own Skeletal artwork adventure. As they put it in a press release:

Digital downloading has brought about an unfortunate situation. From the consumer standpoint, with your purchase, you only receive at best a thumbnail sized image of the album. From the retail standpoint, sales are lost to a faceless server in the middle of nowhere ... The release of Skeletal Lamping is a paradigm shift. The goal is to expand the perception of music packaging beyond traditional flat, square artwork and to bring consumers back to record stores to get it. The album exists in seven different packaging formats: CD, LP, T-shirt, tote bag, button set, paper lantern, and wall decal set. Each item in the Skeletal Lamping Collection includes both the digital album and its unique packaging of the album art.

Don't know what a paradigm shift looks like? Here:

If you want the details, we have some really minute details: the double vinyl's 180 gram (check out the gatefold action above); the horse poster's die cut and folds out to 3 feet x 4 feet (and comes with a download code); the CD tray holds up the two panels; and the wall clings, buttons, t shirts, totes all come with download codes. The CD, LP, tote bags, button set, t-shirts, "wall clings," and "lantern wall clings" will be sold at Blik design retailers. They're designed by David Barnes and Gemini Tactics of the Apollinaire Rave Collective (yes, rave collective).

By the way, Skeletal Lamping is out 10/7 via Polyvinyl.

you know what helps a paradigm shift work? not being super expensive.

I think it works better as novelty, but it's still pretty wicked. People don't care about buying music, but they'll buy shirts with a band's name on it to show off. I personally think the lantern is killer.

This should be boycotted on the grouds of presumptuousness. "Paradigm shift" my ass. Though I would take a free lantern as long as I did not have to listen to their music.
