OMG! Corgan To Reform Pumpkins, Marry Tom Cruise!

Billy Corgan has a message for his hometown in full-page newspaper ads in today's Tribune and Sun-Times.

Today is a special day in my life as it marks the release of my very first solo album TheFutureEmbrace. For over 17 years I have been proud to represent Chicago as an artist through my words and music, and am continually humbled by the undying love that I have been shown from this city as one of its native sons.

...

When I played the final Smashing Pumpkins show on the night of December 2, 2000, I walked off the Metro stage believing that I was forever leaving a piece of my life behind. I naively tried to start a new band, but found that my heart wasn't in it. I moved away to pursue a love that I once had but got lost. So I moved back home to heal what was broken in me, and to my surprise I found what I was looking for. I found that my heart is in Chicago, and that my heart is in The Smashing Pumpkins.

For a year now I have walked around with a secret, a secret I chose to keep. But now I want you to be among the first to know that I have made plans to renew and revive The Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams. In this desire I feel I have come home again.

Previously: Billy Corgan hates Zwan and won't reform Pumpkins.

Chicago - "You're The Inspiration" (MP3)

So does anyone else know this secret? Did James Iha read it at the same time (or after??) I did? You know, it would have been even more effective publicity if he posted this message in the liner notes of the new album.

wow. i have no words. i can only imagine what james and d'arcy are thinking right now (especially d'arcy). it's probably feeling especially hot out there in the good ol' midwest...

i'm all for them getting back together, but only if they revisit the spirit of albums like 'gish' and 'siamese dream.' most everything after that just sucked. hard.

ps: 1st post, bitches! (how sad am i?)

For eveyone out there, like me, who feels like they've waited their whole life for a Pumpkins reunion, today is a monumnental step towards heaven and earth being united as one. I'm going to go hang myself now; I can die happy; The Smashing Pumpkins are back.

But isn't all of this wishful thinking? What's the chance that a revived set will be as good as the old? Can't think of many groups who've reunited and created BETTER music. But then again, it's only been a few years and Chicago needs some action so...

I remember seeing them in Chicago on New Year's Eve opening for My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, you could have powered a small city with the electricity inside The Metro that night.

I am hoping that they do get back together and recreate that buzz, because that was one of the best fucking shows I have ever seen.

The only ever time I saw the Pumpkins in concert, I was amazed at how terrible Corgan's voice is. And don't you guys remember all the hissy-fits on stage? Sure, we all have fond memories of Siamese Dream, but aren't we trying to forget Machina, Zwan, etc, etc.?

pageblank is right. ive seen the pumpkins live 3 times and zwan twice, but the energy they put out at the shows was something that you dont see anymore. Have you ever heard Machina II? That album is great. Shame it never got a proper release from virgin.

Siamese Dream is one of my top five albums of all time. Gish, as a predecessor, is amazing, but it's clear that SD was where all Corgan's ideas (even those expressed on Gish) came to their fullest fruition.

Sadly, I don't think a Pumpkins reunion will be much more than what you'd get out of going to see Michael Moore film: preaching to the already converted and giving them exactly what they want. Billy Corgan is completely irrelevant to today's music scene/culture. If they do reunite, it won't be for anything other than old fans going to see them play songs they either haven't heard in years or have been kicking themselves for never having gotten to see live. But it won't be anything new and if they do create anything new, it (sadly) won't be at all pertinent.

Also, after that "misguided people" quip, how badly do you think Iha and D'Arcy want this reunion? Just saying: can't reunite without half your band lol

SD is one of my favorite albums (especially, the softer second half of the album). MCIS is also a pretty solid album. Machina is one of the worst albums I have ever bought. I listened to it once and threw it away. It was just a lot of noise and screaming. It had no melody.

I couldn't get into Zwan and I listened to this new one on myspace a few days ago. It didn't really leave much of an impression on me.

I tend to think the Pumpkins best days are behind them and they are of historical importance, but probably won't make any more great music. It had its time and place, but I don't see them making a mark in the current scene.

No one can give Corgan slack without giving Frank Black the same. I mean really isn't this a little familiar to the Pixies reunion? Frank says it'll never happen and then breaks down and reunites with estranged bandmates. Goes on tour and gets all over MTV (and now they are opening for Weezer. Opening! Disgusting). I think everyone should be more upset with him/them.

Shirley makes a good point. If the Smashing Pumpkins come back and play AS A BAND and at least give us the impression of enjoying each other (like the Pixies), then there'll be no reason to hate. If they implode immediately and deliver sub-par albums and performances marked by pissy little fights...

I'm praying for a full reunion. And I'm praying for Billy to sit down and listen tot he drek that he's been putting out for the past six years and drop Flood and hire Butch Vig again. Someone needs to clue Billy into the fact that just because you're all happy now doesn't mean that you can't get pissed off now and again. Let me feel that rage! Scream in my face! I want it to slap me, not touch me. Bring the Army Of Rock that I know you've got camping out in your backyard. They've been on reserve too long. It's time for battle.

New York: more than half of the people living there are not from NY.

Dirt im guessing your from Iowa, possibly Oklahoma or maybe Long Island.

and your a deuche bag...

If we are going to discuss originality the overdone New York " strokes look" was cool for the strokes, bottom line.

But... the 1,650,832 other bands coming out of New York suffereing from the "The" syndrome in front of their band name are crap.

Dirt you are probaly as uneducated as you sound, but I am sure you spend most of your day watching Sally Jesse Raphael, on your mom's couch eating Nachoes.

Also Billy Corgan is a creep, he needs to put some clothes on.

I mean I love the pumpkins and all, but did he really need to take out a full page in the paper to announce the reunion?? Why not just ask for peoples nostalgia buck on MTV or something? I'd expect that from David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar, but I always thought Corgan had a little more class than that.

Right, because god forbid anyone should, oh, critique the act of consuming music. Gang of Who? Or that, I don't know, anyone should link music to anything other than Billy Corgan's male pattern baldness. Damn you, LEX!

I stopped caring about the pumpkins after Billy shaved his head and dumped his girlfriend for some model and went all 5th avenue uncle fester. Who needs that shit? Siamese Dream was great and I liked Pisces Iscariot and Gish, but compaing a pumkins reunion to the pixies reunion on any grounds other than self-important frontmen and clashing personalities is absurd. Plus, Charles Thompson and Kim Deal both ahd very succesful and productive solo careers. Billy's put out two albums that have both been widely panned, and, um, a Jewel-like foray into published poetry. And he was never, not even back in the days of "Soma," "Cherub Rock," "Disarm" and "Today" as adventurous and ingenious a songwriter as Thompson.

Hm.

Well, it's three-fucking-thirty a.m. and I just read this weird bit of news. I coulda guessed, maybe.

Such a huge fan of the early Pumpkins, all the way up to Mellon Collie - Adore, Machina, Zwan, his new stuff, all make me want to throw up.

However, there's something out there for everyone, I guess.

I think Billy Corgan's a little egotistical (what?!?) and that they will never recapture the magic of their old(er) songs because of his shaven-head-I-want-to-wear-dark-dresses stuff.

But who am I to say.

Flame wars on blogs are hilarious.

That said, I'm going the fuck to bed.

I liked all the Pumpkins albums. Machina was definetly the weakest, however, I really liked some of the songs. A decent album I believe.

Adore was excellent, songs like Once Upon A Time, and To Shiela, were amazing.

So this is exciting news. I am positive this will not be a full Reunion. Iha will not return, I would be shocked if he did. After the way he has insulted and disrespected them so many times why would they return? I agree with the other dude who said it will be Billy and Jimmy.

The main concern I have is the direction of this new band. I hope he does not recreate the sound of his solo album. As much as I like his stuff its a mediocre album at best. Musically boring, at times moody, and it has his worst lyrics.

Anyway cool news, but Billy is still attention starved and egotistical.

love hate, do whatever you will.

but please understand that Corgan still has fucking legions upon legions of fans, and they cannot be stopped. cannot be stopped. I know because I am one. even the guys at Pitchfork, despite their Daily Show-esque recent interview with him, admit to a certain level of Billy-whoredom.

and let it be known that nearly every date on Corgan's solo tour (starting Wednesday in Atlanta) was sold out long before this ad came out. those dates likely sold out faster than the Pixies reunion tour tickets, and in similar venues, as well (I saw them last year on their "last ever, we swear!" tour).

and I also think that Zwan got shafted, and that they were severely underrated.

as for the Pumpkins revival, I am excited about the possibility of touring. even if it's just Jimmy, Billy, and Melissa auf der Maur, that makes me happy. it would be a new album that would make me nervous.

and to Lex, might I say that I'm a dirt-worshipping vegetarian hippie liberal, and I spend plenty of time doing what I can to undo GWB's ass-headedness, but right now I'm at work on the night shift cause I'm a dirt ass poor liberal who doesn't drive a car, trying to make ends meet. it's 3am and I'm bored, and honestly, if it weren't for the music I love, I wouldn't be able to get out of bed most days.

it's people like you who hault progress in our society just as they think they're pushing it foward.

Billy may have many fans, but not enough to stop lack luster sales of his last three albums. I could care less if his shows sell out. Good for him. His new album is still weak.

The funny thing is he claims his solo album is what Adore would have been if he new what he was doing at the time, but Adore is far superior to hit latest solo album.

Depressing for several reasons. Firstly, that the poor sap is content to simply regurgitate past ideas & concepts for the sake of making a buck (taking a lesson from Frank Black & Perry Farrell's "Profiting From Career Stasis" handbook) rather than taking the time to, God forbid, push some boundaries.
And secondly, that there are "fans" out there who will gladly give him good money for the privilege of being treated like ignorant rubes. Even if you liked the Pumpkins at one point or another, isn't it a little early for nostalgia? What has it been - five years, tops?
Depressing, also, that James and D'Arcy will probably be along for the ride (as hired sidemen, just like in the old days); money talks loud when you have no real life skills to fall back on.

Phillip, learn to spell (who's uneducated now) - it's DOUCHE (French word for shower - those of us educated know this). Secondly, yes - a lot of NYers are transplants; so Chicago is ALL natives (and besides what point does this even serve - it's about where you CHOOSE to be located NOW)? Do you think you're really intelligent? Weak logic - nice try. And by the way (shows how much YOU know), NY has progressed from the Strokes (sorry - I know Chicago is a bit behind). I won't even attempt to list, but I would gather the list on this side outweighs a bit that of CHI-TOWN.

WTF Billy? You're done, sweetheart. Your sun was setting 10 years ago!

I knew he was nuts when he referred to himself as "greater than Brian Wilson" (ala Oasis) back when SD came out...

katie- I can't believe that billy would have called himself better than brian wilson. billy is egomaniacal enough to consider himself in the same ranks as wilson, the beatles, et al, which is a stretch but not an inconceivable one.

i hope the pumpkins get back together. anything's better than this mopey half-assed soulless solo stuff.

Do some of you really think that Corgan is going to write music the way he used to? In order to run a successful business, you need to market things people want....In order to be a successfull musician, you need to write music that isnt all-out 90's grunge/noise pop. Obviously Billy knows that. He's not going to start writing stuff like "Tales of A Scorched Earth." He is an amazing song writer....and ya....so he's written some crappy music. Shit happens. I'm sure the pumpkins wont be the most popular band around...but they do have millions of fans out there. AS long as they play some of their old stuff....like "Today" or "Geek USA"...im sure they'll last a couple of years at least.

No one here's a bigger SP/Corgan fan than me. In fact, I'm listening to the 12/31/90 NYE Metro show right now. I expected this reunion plan announcement, but not until after the solo tour, cuz James is idle, Jimmy's done his solo tour, and Darcy, who knows?

I luv all yous for bitchin at Les, but to the many others who keep saying that Gish, SD were SP's only great work, YOU'RE NOT REAL SP FANS! MCIS is 1 of the best and ambitious double albums ever! PI is 1 of the best B-sides comps ever! Even TAFI box set was incredible! Most of Machina, Adore, and Machina II was very good (only a few tracks on each were sub-par).

Most bands would kill to have all this great material (have I mentioned "Drown," "Eye" "TEITBITE" "Never Let Me Down" "Slunk" "Jackie Blue" or the classic VIEUPHORIA video/DVD?)

Any true SP fan knows they (& PJ) were the most exciting band to follow & best LIVE band in the 1990s - James Iha had a lot to do with SP's powerful live show; he stole the spotlight with his influential EBOW-style guitar playing. Think of all the great and different live versions of favs and rarities like "1979" "HOLIDAY" "Today" "Zero" "Stumbleine" "HOME" "If There Is A God," "Shame" "Starla" "Rhinoceros" "Try Try Try", etc.

Knowing all that, if the thought of their LIVE show doesn't excite you, I guess I won't be seeing you at the Pumpkins reunion shows.
Be there or be queer!

PS To you less informed cynics, Billy broke up SP cuz James Iha didn't want to do it anymore; so the REUNION means Billy reuniting WITH JAMES (Jimmy is a given; D'arcy is the wild card, with Melissa waiting in the wings just in case).

Ha ha. You can never lose with Simpsons references, but no, I'm not kidding. Maybe SP wasn't THEE best live band in their time, but they were the best at their peak (up until Jimmy got kicked out and when he came back for the 1999 shows, which were some of the best shows they ever did!).

SP may never return to the coolness of the Gish era or recapture the energy of the SD era (minus the I Am One rants), but they had better be as great as they were in 1995, 1998 or 1999, or they'll flame out again for good.

Wow guys, some of you are pretty mean-spirited. I don't have much to say, but the makin' fun of the heartland is a little harsh. Iowa is great, don't you think? You should come here before you "diss" us, or whatever it is city-folks say. (just joking).

Anyway, I think everyone knows Billy is a little (or lot) egomaniacal/self-indulgent/etc..., but we all have faults, right?

Next, I think it might be cool if the SP got back together and did some good stuff, but agree that it could really... really go south too and make some terrible music (BTW, don't care for BC's solo stuff, but to each their own).

That's all I got.

PS You guys use the F word a lot! (just joking, I don't really care).

Who cares if BC is an egomaniac? All I care about is what his music's like, though having read your posts the general consensus seems to be that I'm wrong. I only got into Pumpkins the year after they split, so the chance to see my favourite band live is one I thought I would never get. Consequently, this news has me really excited.
Also, if you hate Billy or his music why did you even bother looking at this page? And you guys who keep comparing NY to Chicago, I'd just like to illustrate my utter lack of interest.

i dont understand how everybody bashes MACHINA. It is obviously out of their old realm but it is a great, uplifting album. Some of the "fans" threw it away because it doesn't sound like their major hit albums in an era where the pumpkins could have released the greatest album of all time and it wouldn't have been regarded as popular or good because good rock had been phased out. MACHINA was a return to earth and a humble album for a group that had been pushed aside for a different age of music after being one of the top bands on the planet. I know this isnt the topic but i can't stand how this is regarded as such a bad album, pretty much every track flows with uplifting energy.

Ppl didnt like Machina because it was difficult to listen too. Too heavy with too much fill and noise. If you can get past the differing style or if you actually like it then I think its a pretty good album. I thought quite a few of the songs on the album were top notch like Stand Inside Your Love. I am saying Iha does not return. Mark my words he will not return. I hope I am wrong but I seriously doubt it.

Billy Corgan is entirely justified in comparing himself with the beatles.

Granted, the Pumpkins haven't had the time to allow their influence to become what the beatles has become, but they are without a doubt as good, if not better.

I mean TODAY, FFS TODAY.

Anyone who doesn't agree that Billy Corgan is entirely justified in saying the things he says, and acting the way he does did not get smashing pumpkins. They are fucking holy.

If you are a true smashing pumkins fan, this is probably the greatest music news you could expect to hear, because to be a true smashing pumpkins fan you have to realise that smashing pumpkins are sacred.

Billy Corgan, I LOVE YOU, I LOVED ZWAN, I LOVE YOUR SOLOS, I LOVED EVERY SMASHING PUMPKINS ALBUM.

This is clearly the same situation as with Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. Both bands are utterly, life-alteringly brilliant... but not many people "get" their music. Some folks appreciate the appeal of the more commercial albums (such as OK Computer and With Teeth) but will never be able to grasp the beauty of the experimental work (such as Kid A and The Fragile).

Similarly, those who are "fans" of the Pumpkins, will understand how great their earlier stuff is, but may not have ever got into the later releases. Trust me, it's worth it - the Machina sessions were perhaps Billy's more creatively brilliant period, along with Mellon Collie.

Oh, and the new album is pretty decent - it takes a few listens but it's refreshingly different to the bollocks that's on the scene right now.

If the Pumpkins do reform, I'll be the first in the queue to see them play. Billy = legend.

The first group that inspired me to get into music in general was the one and only the Smashing pumpkins, in fact one of the first cds i remember owning was Mellen Collie.... Just the other day i got it out and blasted Muzzle then all the other songs on it and it was a great feeling. That is by far their most mature and beautiful work of art they will ever have done. Its cool they are getting back together because i never thought i would get the chance to see em live...of course if Darcy and James arnt aprart of it i would very much lose enthusiasim. For all you people blasting Billy Corgan and the pumpkins, you just dont know great music. Nobody writes lyrics like Corgan...if you ever even have taken the time to sit down and actualy listen to them. I will Admit after Mellen Collie and Adore they kind of went to hell, more so starting with that batman soundtrack song but as others said they play with great enery and those happy and distruat melodies that we all miss would be nice to hear again...Anything is better than that hip hop shit or wahtvers laying in the music scene now.

Well, Billy Corgan could beat up Superman if it came down to it, besides he's been a bigger hero to me than just about anyone, and reuniting the Pumpkins isn't any skin off any of your backs, so why be little fuckin johnny rainclouds about it? I'm all for it, even if it does flop. It'll be something new to be excited about. Hey, and no hard feelings- I like sperm whales too.

granted machina sucked as dose billys new stuff and his ego is the size of the midwest but it dosnt mean theres no hope.
if he can look at that work as experiments and think where his strengths lie he may be able to become a relivent song writer again. he needs to re-discover his guitar and what got him into music in the first place.
And there show need to get back to basics 'no more costume changes' just music, rocking out and lighter waving.
he needs to forget machina and remember gish

If a son comes home, and is so happy about it, that he shouts it out, the city can surely be proud of it.
I, as a german tourist, would normally only have gone to New York or San F. or L.A. But knowing about Chicago in connection with the musicscene that spreads its reputation widely many younger people may consider a chicago visit nowerdays.

Billy Corgan is somehow not easy to love since he is so almost too kitschy in his behaviour (and in some lyrics also) and so unable to socialize with his bandmates. But he is for sure one of the worlds greatest musisions. Will he be seen as a beethoven or a bernstein in the future? I came to that conclusion when i found more and more bootlegs and unreleased stuff that show how incredible creative he is. Music seems to be poring out of him any time. May Chicago just love him now - i guess he needs it. And uneasy as he is, he may be worth it - the greatest kreative souls have never been easy to cope with.

Good luck Chicago

I think everyone is too hard on Billy. Most people that say they like The Smashing Pumpkins liked them because they were jumping on the "alternative" bandwagon. No one cared about the artistic side to it all. Now that Billy is not giving everyone what they want, everyone is getting pissed. I give kudos to Billy for not selling out and doing what he wants in spite of what most "fans" want.

You people are retarded do you even know what music is Billy Corgan is one of the greatest and most musically inclined people to walk the earth and I think everything he has ever made was just the best. You see The Future Embrace wasn't supposed to be like the Pumpkins or Zwan it was supposed to be different and I think me and my friend were the only people that liked it. I think the Future Embrace was one of the best cds i've ever...gotten. Then Adore and Machina were different because they weren't supposed to be like the others it was almost like a different band was playing, but they were still the Pumpkins, but a different kind of "good" like Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie. I say any way Billy Corgan goes I am still going to be a huge fan because I don't just like mainstream crap like what most people listen to just because their friend said it was good. But on the issue of Billy reforming the Pumpkins I think it is a great idea I did like them better than the other stuff and he can still make stuff like The Future Embrace cuz I thought that was some damn good writing there except for the fact that every drum beat sounded like it came from a Digitech Effects Processor. And I just noticed that Robert Smith of the Cure sings in one of the Future Embrace songs I forget which one and I didn't get the book and case with the cd so I don't know if it says andthing about him. And I love Robert Smith's voice it goes great with Billy's.

if d'arcy and james had any dignity whatsoever, then they would deny the reunion and keep trekking on their own paths, as pathetic as each path is on -- d'arcy's drugs and james's solo crap along with him guest-spotting on every fuckin' band's in the world single, at least it's their own respectively.

Billy needs them like valium during a comedown. The reunion is purely to soothe his confused and battered ego. Don't give hime the satisfaction guys (to rest of the band). Stay your ground. Infact, D'arcy why don't you raise yor fuckin kid and to James, invest in a hair-dye business. How many fuckin shades of blond, red, and black can a person conciously weave into his own hair???
