One Swan, Maybe- But Seven? Come On!
Best part of this interview with Grizzly Bear in Prefix Magazine:
PM: I didn't realize Sufjan Stevens was Christian.It's true: Sufjan is a total homoousian.
Grizzly Bear: Yeah, he's a hyper-Christian. I really like his music a lot. He kept singing about "he" and "him," and I thought he was gay at first. Then I found out he was talking about God.
Grizzly Bear's 2004 album, Horn of Plenty, is due for reissue and will be celebrated with a disc of remixes from people like Rusty Santos from Animal Collective and Solex. Below, a danceable remix from Simon Bookish.
Grizzly Bear - "Eavesdropping (Simon Bookish Remix)" (MP3 link expired)
Update: Grizzly Bear's Droste writes to say "thanks" and also sends a link to a really cool video for "Deep Sea Diver."

November. They're on Efterklang's label, apparently.

finally you guys are on the grizz tip. indiekids.org had a few mp3s up the other day.
final fantasy's remix is great
Score = 0
These guys are amazing! Seriously, it's about time. Unfortunately, I think they've been overlooked too much lately. But hopefully, with this new re-release and the amazing remixes, they'll gain some more steam! They really deserve it! F'real
Score = 0
This is definitely a standout- both Horn of Plenty and the remixes are great.

GRIZZLY BEAR fucking kills it. They are so on point it's retarded and freaks me out. Horn of Plenty is one of my favorite albums.
Next Monday, on my radio show, I'm premiering several more of the tracks so you should all tune in and listen if you're not stoops. In all seriousness, though, I think they're the next big obsession.

i've heard some of the remixes and they're really outstanding. the album is great on it's own as well. very excited for this release

try this:
fall asleep while listening to Horn of Plenty. it will take you into this magical weird dream-world where everyone can breathe underwater and your best friend is a unicorn that might be evil, but youre not sure. sometimes its scary, but most of the time, its amazing.
basically, this album is fantastic.
Score = 1
i'm surprised at this sufjan business. am i the only one who was unaware???
whatev. i'd still let him knock me up.
Score = 0
i read an interview with him on nerve.com that straight up addresses his christianity in a sort of confrontational way asking him what his position was on gay marriage. he declined to comment.
Score = 0
Owen (Final Fantasy) does a terrific job with "Don't Ask". I feel as if there is not nearly enough press for the work he does for other bands (as well as his own live shows)
Score = 0
In the above-linked Christianity Today review of Seven Swans, I like the part at the bottom where the editors say, "Unless specified clearly, we are not implying whether this artist is or is not a Christian. The views expressed are simply the author's."
They really don't want to take the chance to offend one single reader. You'd think that Christians would be more willing to take a stand. . .

Grizzly is playing a benefit with Sufjan next week at Bowery Ballroom to benfit Katrina victims. Should be really cool. They put on a really good live show. I've seen them a bunch of times now and been pretty impressed. Check out the clarinet player; he's worth watching.
Score = 0
yes that show will be great. akron/family too

Grizzly Bear is the deal. see them live. and they have good shirts.

Wow, even I knew that Sufjan was hyper-christian, and I somehow haven't even heard a single song of his (odd, I know).
Score = 0
haha christ, that christianitytoday review or whatever the fuck that site was called was AWFUL. OMG christians find it hard to get into Pedro The Lion because they drank vodka on stage at Cornerstone!!! hahaha. What a load. But of course, they can get all into Sufjan, because for all intents purposes, they've never seen him drink or deviate from their conservative lifestyle. Good times...
At the Sufjan concert I went to there were youth groups there and they didn't fucking move once. Hands in pockets...staring at the building with awe [whooooa we're in a CLUB!] It was funny until they took photo after photo with their fucking camera phones in the air, and stuck their hands up for a few songs...I always wondered what was with that...something about being closer to jesus perhaps??

these dudes rule, especially live.
rusty joined animal collective? awesome.
Score = 0
i think that was a typo on stereogum's part
as far as I know he just produced some of their stuff.
agree on the live tip rainbow
Score = 0
Believe me, he's not talking about God:
(from Predatory Wasp)
Touching his back with my hand I kiss him
I see the wasp on the length of my arm
We were in love, we were in love
......
I can't explain the state that I'm in
The state of my heart, he was my best friend
Into the car, from the back seat
Oh admiration in falling asleep
.........
I can tell you, I love him each day
Score = 0
Horn Of Plenty was featured in that Listening Lately part of the Stereogum right nav six months ago.
Also, my fiancee bought me a magazine 'cause it had Sufjan on the cover. Then we realized it was a magazine about religion AND indie music. More on that later.
Score = 0
was the magazine called relevant? i picked up one of those once with moby on the cover and it turned out to be christian/punk/indie/alternative/whatever.
Score = 0
Yeah, Relevant!

Yes, is this Rusty/Animal Collective thing new? Or is that, like, the Geologist's real name? Sometimes I love AC, sometimes they give me headaches...
Score = 0
that's kind of hilarious... "to be alone with you" is one of my favorite songs. and i'm an atheist. :)
had no idea it was about that.
Score = 0
i dunno. i was thinking of those lyrics too, but I'm pretty sure he's a hetero , and a staunch christian one to boot!
listening lately feature?
you mean the album covers on the side?
i love your site scott, but that's hardly coverage. that's like a head nod from the cool kid at the party.
i'm glad you all finally covered this band. seriously a long time coming
Score = 0
Grizzly Bear is one of those rare bands that is capable of rejuvinating a bad day.

When I looked up Rusty and AC, this page called him a "producer/collaborator":
http://www.midheaven.com/artists/santos.rusty.html
Good enough for Jim "Lazy J" Stereogum.
Score = 0
good thing you guys are my homepage
i just saw the video update
so fun!
kinda like a more homemade paranoid android video, crossed with the drawings that are in wes anderson movies

With regards to those 'Predatory Wasp' lyrics,
why does a man saying that he loves another man have to indicate homosexuality? I mean, best friend?
On top of that, what's the problem with someone being a Christian? It's no scandal for an artist to come out of any closet other than being a Christian, it seems.
Predatory Wasp is my favorite on the album too.
Score = 0
"Good enough for Jim "Lazy J" Stereogum."
Apparantly too lazy to even link the source of the MP3 he posts.
www.indiekids.org had this song first and two others too.
Score = 0
Matt, I have both CDs, but I didn't get a chance to post about them previously. I had no idea IndieKids had it until someone else mentioned it in the comments...so, too lazy to read everyone every day. I was out of town over the weekend.
Score = 0
at long last stereogum makes mention of Grizzly Bear! I've seen these guys a couple of times and I'm pretty sure they're one of the better bands out there right now. The recordings are great, but the live show kicks ass. Anyone in NYC should be sure to chack out the Bowery Ballroom show. It's guaranteed to be amazing.

Checked the link to christianitytoday.com and was surprised to find a review of the new Ying Yang Twin's album...was even more surprised that they really liked it. I guess they are some open christians...beat that pussy up...

the dude dresses in a boy scout uniform for christ's sake. he's definitely a closet case.
Score = 1
Paul-
Kissing men? I like that song too, and I couldn't care less if he's straight/gay/bi/christian/whatever.... but I personally don't think he's talking about kissing God and God giving up "a wife and a family to be alone with" him..... its prolly just me.

can someone please find out whether sufjan is gay. some gawker type must know. anyone? anyone?
fyi, that simon bookish remix has seriously grown on me
Score = 0
I'm think Predatory Wasp is not about him.
"Wearing three layers of coats and leg warmers"
"I come out wearing my brother's red hat"
Guys don't usually wear leg warmers. I think it's about his sis. It makes sense to me. It's just a theory though.

Dude,...the video for Grizzly Bear kicks some major ass!!!
