Oscar's Making His Picks
We're already commiserating over this year's Grammy nods, but it's never too early to get unexcited for the Oscar nods for Best Original Song. Relevance aside, how cool would it be if Spoon or DeVotchKa took home an Oscar? The eligible Outkast cut ("PJ & Rooster") is really hot too (Dodge's got it). But as Aimee reminded us, "'Save Me' lost an Oscar to Phil Collins and his monkey song." So our money's on .... Randy Newman?

For those keeping track at home, that's Martin Scorcese - 0, Three-six Mafia - 1
Score = 0
How long do you think before they give it to Scorcese just 'cause they have to? Like, when he's really old and just puts out a shitty movie?

It's what happens when the cat gets all caught up in the non-essential elements of his movies [costume, expensive film stock, music, sound design] instead of those that matter [e.g. storyline, script]. I say non-essential in stingy terms -- of course those things matter, but none of them count if the story they're supporting is rotten to begin with.
Funny that even people who work for him have taken home many oscars, and he is still out in the cold.
Do you think he will ever take home "best director"? So many times the bridesmaid, and yet never the bride.
If they give him lifetime achievement, maybe he'll never get the big one.

I don't care that it's a cartoon, and I don't care that it's not even the best song he wrote for the cartoon, but Paul Westerberg winning for "I Belong" would be just about the coolest thing ever.
With multiple songs in the running and excellent advance reviews, Dreamgirls has this category in the bag, though.

Oh pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease let it be Westerberg.

I think the best song from a movie this year would have to be Samuel L. Jackson performing "Black Snake Moan" from the movie of the same name...though that movie might not come out until next year. Whenever it does, it should win for real.

Ten bucks says if Westerberg gets nominated that they have Pete Yorn perform it. At least Westerberg will BE there though. I'm guessing Beyonce will win for that Dreamgirls song though.
The 10" vinyl version of "I Belong" is amazing.

Even money on Melissa Etheridge from Inconvenient Truth or Jack Johnson from Curious George. Sad but true - one of those crappers is takin' it home.

Is there anything less punk, less indie and less flattering than Aimee Mann still whining about not winning an Oscar? It's an Academy Award, not the Nobel Prize for music. And anyone who agreed to utter the line "I hate playing vampire towns" in exchange for exposure on the fifth-place network probably shoudln't throw stones. She might be surprised at the overlap between her fanbase and ol' Phil's.

Melissa Ethridge's song for the win!!!

Scott W., since when does putting in a cameo on one of the best-written, critically-acclaimed TV shows of the last decade (you're betraying some pretty nerdy stripes by giving a shit what the network was ranked, btw) disqualify one from making derogatory comments about Phil Collins? Also, when did Aimee Mann claim to be "punk" or "indie?" She's a friggin' songwriter, not some icon of underground purity. And, while it's typically not gracious to complain about losing, I give a pass when it specifically involves losing to "I'll Be in Your Heart" or whatever. Mann said she would have had no problem losing to Parker and Stone.

though it's not their best songs, paul westerberg spoon or prince winning an oscar might make me watch, or at least search for the performance on youtube.

Shouldn't Thom Yoke be nominated for Black Swan? I know he didn't write is specifically for A Scanner Darkly, but it was in the end credits of that before The Eraser was released. If that doesn't happen, I'm really hoping for Spoon.

Gosh, that's really cool of her to say who she wouldn't have minded losing to. The point isn't indie puritiy .The point is, the only thing lamer than giving a fuck if you win an Oscar is being bitter that you lost--no matter who won instead.

Why wasn't Sufjan nominated? Isn't Chicago on LMS's soundtrack?

"The point is, the only thing lamer than giving a fuck if you win an Oscar is being bitter that you lost--no matter who won instead."
You don't think it would tick Scorsese off just a little if the academy recognized Nacho Libre over the Departed for best film of the year? Because that's sort of the movie equivalent to Collins beating Mann.
Also, you're an idiot if you think Mann was taking it any more seriously than was required for her to make a humorous cutting remark or two at Colllins' expense. "Bitter" is a huge overstatement from the interviews I've read - I doubt she lost sleep over the loss.

not that i'm advocating, but what technicality prevents Tenacious D from eligibility?

Who wrote and sang the song in the Akeelah and the bee movie, Definition of Love?
