Overdrive Killed The Video Star
MTV turns 25 next week! USA Today claims the network will celebrate quietly, but I predict a flashy Times Square blowout with Cheyenne and the Naked Cowboy. And how cool is this: VH1 Classic will re-air MTV's first day of programming starting Tuesday at midnight.

You might have also read about MTV's Flux, a futuristic interactive channel you're not allowed to watch if you own a Mac.
The 2006 Video Music Awards nods should be revealed any day now. But why wait to whine? I bet we can predict the Video Of The Year choices if we put thousands of our heads together.
1. What clips will be nominated for Video Of The Year?
2. What is really the best Video Of The Year?

I'm betting on My Humps. Does Gold Digger get counted for this year?
Score = 0
one of the best videos i saw this year was The Spinto Band's "oh mandy"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1nDy1aS9oM
Score = 0
better quality Spinto band video: http://awesomeandmodest.com/spinto_final.mov
Score = 0
Is this really something to celebrate considering the degrading quality of the station?
Score = 0
Well of course MTV'll be celebrating quietly. Today's core audience wasn't even born when the damn channel first aired!
"Martha Quinn? Umm, like, I don't know who that is. Does she, like, have a MySpace or something?"
etc.
Score = 0
Hands-down.

I haven't heard a worse song, or seen a better video all year.
Score = 0
Scott, it's not too late to post an mp3 of Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper's "Stuffing Martha's Muffin". . .
Score = 0
Who else had to "change the sheets" every time Martha Quinn's late night infommercial came on for sounds of the 80's?
Anyone?
Jesus, I feel so lonely.
What I meant to say was, go buy the new Hilary Duff. She has new material out doesn't she?
Ah fuck.

if the black eyed peas had a video to accompany their lovely desecration/cover of "get ready" from the commercials for the upcoming CW network - that would sweep all.
Score = 0
Kanye's "Touch the Sky" will probably be nominated, at least: celebrity cameo, story line, "funny" interlude, retro pop culture reference.
Score = 0
I watched a bunch of MTV music awards in the 90's, and literally the only one where I can remember anything from is the one where Pearl Jam won everything.
And they probably actually deserved it for the most part. Jeremy was a good video.
Score = 0
That Gnarls Barkley video you had on the page a week ago was incredibly awesome. Not really into their music, but Baron von Counterculture's Purple Dirigible had me legitimately laughing out loud. So I'd have to go with that, though it almost definitely will face stiff competition from Everclear's epic tour-de-force "Hater".
Score = 0
turn into really should get something because karen o is so fucking cute
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8BfC2vIlrPo&search=turn%20into
but it'll probably end up being.. that all-american rejects video that makes me feel like i have epilepsy and am in a room of crying emo boys in different hipster clothes
Score = 0
re: that all-american rejects video, i actually really like it. the editing is amazing. i think the yeah yeah yeahs should sweep, though. but they wont. fall out boy and kanye will win with whatever they have out right now.

jog your music video memory via antville's monthly digests of the best/most interesting videos:

*Yawn* Nobody watches videos anymore. We just kidnap the musicians we like and make them perform for us out in the desert, and when we get bored with that, we make them act out our favorite movies.
Kanye actually makes a pretty good Deuce Bigalow.
Score = 0
Well since the last time they "celebrated" something like this in that sort of non-quiet fashion (in 2001, for their 20th anniversary when they had a week-long marathon of nostalgia clips and self-grandguerizing nonsense), a few days later that nssty business of 9/11 happened, I'd hypothesize they might choose to keep things on the DL as it were this time around.
Score = 0
Why? That doesnt make any sense to me.
Score = 0
Usually they pick videos from the third quarter of the previous year as the best. Since MTV probably wants to give Jamie Foxx one last moment of glory before he's forever remembered as the guy who could never replace Philip Michael Thomaas, the answer is Kanye West's Gold Digger.
Score = 0
Kanye West
Fall Out Boy
Panic! At The Disco
The All American Rejects
Three Six Mafia
Mariah Carey
D4L
Score = 0
viewer's choice will go to fall out boy
my choice would be gnarles barley crazy
Score = 0
gnarls barkley should win the most overrated artist of 2006. what a shit load of hype for nothing.
Score = 0
Pearl Jam's return to video's with "Life Wasted" was pretty cool and fit the song well, as did the clip for Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into The Dark". As far as worst video, I'd have to go with poor Bo Bice and the godawful "Real Thing" song and video, just terrible and bland, I think he'll do something more decent once he's put American Idol a little further behind him.
Score = 0
Likely candidates:
Fall Out Boy "Dance Dance"
Gnarls "Crazy"
T.I. "What You Know"
Kanye "Touch the Sky"
Chamillionaire "Ridin'"
Madonna "Hung Up"
My money's on Gnarls or Fall Out Boy
Score = 0
It will probably be something straight out of the MTV corporate machine. I never thought I'd be saying this, but if they were more like the oscars, good music would be awarded the prize, and then they'd be rewarded by people checking out the band that won. Not rehashing the same crap that we've seen for the past 6 months.

not that great of a video, but the end is pretty ridiculous

Here are 10 vids which I think are from the past year (even though some of the songs aren't) which I actually liked enough to remember:
"Knowing the Things that I Know" - The Blow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33HBEjQht3c
"Cough Coughing" - Menomena
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXV4fmZ9ucQ
"Touch the Sky" - Kanye West
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrNmtmg7ODM
"The Great Escape" - We Are Scientists
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21-TCoFRgy0
"Rough Gem" - Islands (Bark Geldog!)

Just like the radio has been usurped by the mp3 blogs, MTV has been overtaken by the video blogs:
SoHotRightNow: http://sohotrightnow.redshirtmayhem.com
Antville: http://videos.antville.org/
Score = 0
Oh! "When I Wake Up" is great...I nominate that!
More than likely it will be "A Little Less Sixteen Candles...", though...ugh.
Score = 0
I don't get what the time span is for videos to be considered... is it for 2005, or part of 2005 and part of 2006?
Anyway, I think Fall Out Boy or that Panic! At the Disco song will win a few. I guess also Shakira and Mariah Carey.
From the videos that have come out this year and have no chance of winning anything, I like:
"Friend of the Night" by Mogwai
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrCouVZ0L8o
"Casa" by Natalia y la Forquetina
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRVFiYbCaFA
"Boy from School" by Hottt Chip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtxAou8c28k
Oh, and the Gnarls Barkley is awesomesauce, too.
Score = 0
I think this might've came out last year ... but it's still a damn fine video.
Mobius Band - The Loving Sounds of Static
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR_J3JQb00Q
I really wish that their debut full-length would've been a little stronger .. but this song makes up for it.
Score = 0
Probably not the year's best, but they're all still plenty enjoyable.
"Pull Shapes" by The Pipettes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsvKJ65-TlM
"Your Ex-Lover is Dead" by Stars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2yJSFHTrgM
"One Evening" by Feist
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qpZt4EW3W8
Score = 0
Winner: Gnarls
Should Win: Glosoli by Sigur Ros (the kiddie band one, mmmm...)
Score = 0
AFI
Fall Out Boy
Gnarls Barkley
Kanye
Angels and Airwaves
Madonna
All-American Rejects
Black Eyed Peas
Mariah Carey
Panic! At the Disco
MTV worships at the altars of all these artists...which is why they'll all be nominated for several awards apiece. If only somebody would make a Video Awards for us non-corporate spoonfed people.

I haven't watched MTV since Carolyn Heldman "retired".
Score = 0
it's funny that the monster has been alive for 25 years, but only a handful were its best. i miss the slammin' animation that used to air, like, the brothers grunt, liquid television, aeon flux, and those sweet MTV animated bumpers. oh well. bling bling, you wild fucking mu$ic station.
Score = 0
Seriously, the '90's was MTV's best and worst decade. Early '90's were great with Nirvana, The State, Liquid Television.
Late '90's, with Britney and Bizkit, was so horrible, it spawned a counterculture of jaded, sickly, nearsighted rock snobs that more cynical journalists would call hipsters.
