Paul Banks, Puppety Oddball

Have you seen the video for Interpol's "Evil" (Real)? So bad, it's ... bad. What's next, Ben Gibbard made out of paper? (Link via killers-fanz.org.)

In the top three videos of the year, along with Rilo Kiley's "It's a Hit" and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's "No More Workhorse Blues." Totally creepy and insane and surreal.

Yeah, I work for the director of that video, Charlie White. He's kinda creepy himself.

i used to think interpol was the shit, mostly cuz i love joy div but after seeing them live at the ballroom after the first album they just seemed so boring on stage...lifeless, non animated, then the second album comes out, and i think hey what could be in store for us now? well, it just generally blows (a couple good ones , but, mostly blah)

and yeah, video—creepy.

In completly unrelated, but very humorous news... check out the website www.musictoslayby.com Where it's just ruthless voting down other peoples mixes, and building up their own... it's psychotic. I'm personally either pulling for this mix...

Or mine, called "Nix Hex". But I doubt I'll win... crazy...

It's like Vampire Rock's answer to Fabolous' "Breathe." But Paul Banks certainly makes a more handsome puppet.

For me, it was not so much creepy as, "Huh?" or "Is that it?" or "Is something going to happen?" But that's kind of what I think of that band in general anyway...

ugh...

what the hell was that? it totally doesn't fit with the song or the band's aesthetic. but more importantly, the puppetry is flat out terrible. the mouth movements are completely off.

it looks like shite. too bad, it's a great song.

Holy shit, Gus - I was totally thinking it reminded me SO much of this photo exhibit I saw several years ago by Charlie White! It was the "Joshua" series of pictures. I have fantasized for some time about getting a poster from that exhibit. I know there's a "Joshua" book (christ, you think the Interpol video is creepy, wait until you see those photos, people), but I think it's pricey.
Wow, cool, how weird -- What do you do for him??

uh...yeah...not creepy, just kinda silly, which doesn't really fit the song...i imagine that stills would have a more powerful effect, but the video looks like a bad puppet...it has the potential to be much better...but it just doesn't pull it off.

oh well.

I've seen worse, much worse...

Somebody mentioned 'No More Workhorse Blues', wasn't that the one Harmony Korine directed?

I googled it... It's Korine alright, check it out:

Man the video was disappointing and creepy!! They could do so much better, I know they can! The whole concept of the video didn't really fit the song musically and morally!

Augh, Paul the puppet! Man, he looked so scarey! His jaw was so wide and he had so many teeth and it was only on the bottom! Then, when he jumped/lifted to dance, it was so funny! He was dancing in the most impared way ever! Paul looks so handsome in reality and that dummy was just the worst turn off ever! >:|

I won't watch that video again! Because, well its creepy and well, the stuff i just said! I honestly HATE to be this disappointed in Interpol :(

I think it is really good, it is clearly supposed to refrence Ian Curtis and I do not think that the puppet is Paul, I think it is a mix of all of them. I did not like it at first but if you watch it a few times and let it sink in, then "BAM" it kinda clicks and you get what they wanted you to get. It is crazy, it is slow (like the song) and it is actually rather real in its timeing.

Watch it again, maybe smoke up? But watch it again.

i figured that the "paul the puppet" was rather amusing, the whole wide mouth and low bottom jaw just makes it intensely creepy (in a good way). do you ever notice the eyes, looks like they are going to pop out of his head looks like its entranced and possesed (strangly amusing) .........i do realize that yea there is no realation between the song and the video itself , but not every thing has to makes sense. But The puppet is no match to the real life paul, no puppet could live up to him.

I agree with some of you that the video for
"Evil" is really creepy but I don't think that the puppet represents the fantastically handsome Paul. It is somewhat related to the song, isn't it?"Rosemary, Heaven restores you in life".
The woman in the car accident is "Rosemary".
The puppet is her child. Rather creepy, yes,
but not entirely unconnected.
Oh, and is Interpol really that dull on stage?
I love their music but have never seen them live.

Interpol on stage is fucking amazing. Don't listen to the detractors. Their music sucks you right in and sounds better live than on CD.

I am a fan of Interpol, love the new album and the first one too.
Saw them live twice and maybe some of you were at the wrong show but I think they are a great live band with good energy and chemistry. The Evil video however sucks monkey load, especially in comparison to their other video art. Charlie White should quit while he is ahead. I could have made a better video with absolutely no budget at all and I'm sure he spent megabucks on this crappy piece of garbage.

if you take a critical eye, the video is indeed bad. a lot more could have been done with what was there.

if you just accept it for what it is, it fits the band well. creepy, oblique, lyrics half-telling stories.

anyway, interpol makes great music, and that's what counts.
