Pavement May Or May Not Reunite

thubmnail icon: Pavement May Or May Not Reunite

I've been cynical about the flurry of reunions in '08 (and, you'd assume, '09) because music has always seemed more enjoyable to me when it involves discovery, not nostalgia. Nostalgia is for my parents. That said, as we mentioned last year, Pavement may or may not get back together to relive their ramshackle live heyday. Earlier this week there was a post with a misleading headline ("Pavement To Reform") at Loud And Quiet where Spiral Stairs says the guys are on good terms, "'[I]t could be a fun thing to do, go and play your favorite songs every night!" and that we shouldn't rule out Coachella (their booking agent is ostensibly waiting for the right price). Now, in the new Rolling Stone Stephen Malkmus also mentions the idea of the get together in the "Malkmus Discusses His Influences" feature.

It's something to be optimistic about. We would want to practice a lot and rewrite the history books on Pavement's live shows. Every third gig was bad.

Maybe he'll finally get to hang out with U2.

God, I hope I don't have to go to Coachella. Fuck, I'll probably have to.

I think it is especially important to reunite pavement after an earthquake or any other major disaster that causes the ground to break apart. C'mon people, safety first.

I guess I'm just a lot more interested in The Jicks than the idea of Pavement reuniting. They should just hire Bob Nastanovich as the fifth Jick and get on with making the next kickass album.

I love Malkmus and he could do no wrong, but the last album with the Jicks was not good. It was even worse live.

Personally, it's my favorite stuff he's done since Wowee Zowee, and I thought it was really great live.

wow. i'd be into that. who cares if it pays well. or if it's corney. having a band reunite is kind of like re-releasing your favorite movie in theaters. sort of...maybe not...whatever, i'd like to see pavement again.

Is the great Malcmus Pavement one of those Lou Reed VU Robyn H Soft Boy things?... I FINALLY found the post VU Lou I really wanted in Street Hassle and the Soft Boys just have this whole other thing going on that solo Robyn doesn't. I REALLY like Emotional Trash's highlet points...an On the Beach groove which is totally beyond a reformed Pavement...

I wouldn't expect malkmus to do any type of reuniting in the near future but a girl can only dream.. considering slanted and enchanted came out the year I was born, the slow century show is the only one I'll be seeing for a while

I cant afford to go to coachella. I'll just listen to brighten the corners and take some loratabs.

I'm going to break some sort of code here and just be out with it... Pavement? Not a fan. I've tried and like any music, at a certain point it either works for you or it doesn't.

There's no reason a reunion with Pavement could not be good. They were still doing really interesting stuff at the end. I like Terror Twilight a whole bunch. Also for me Pavement is the one band from the 90s real indie-rock scene that holds up the best over time. Back then I was more into Sebadoh, Fugazi, Superchunk etc (for whom I still have much love) but Pavement is still on my usual rotation.

Plus for some reason it seems like this would be less of a Second Mortgage Tour than a "Hey fuck it let's play some shows and see if we come up with new stuff" kind of thing.

cautiously optimistic

I don't see any problem with them getting back to together. 1) They are a great FUCKING Band. 2) Looking at all the other indie bands that got back together (Dinoaur Jr., Pixies, Mission of Burma) they have always pulled it off. 3) None of the members hate each other so the ywill all play together great
