Pavement's Brighten The Corners Reissued
Pavement's fourth full-length might not receive as many "classic" mentions as Slanted & Enchanted, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, or Wowee Zowee, but the fourth installment in Matador and Domino's Deluxe Pavement plan (out 11/18), which remasters the original CD and collects all things Pavement circa 1997 (b-sides, comp tracks, unreleased material like "Neil Hagerty Meets Jon Spencer In A Non-Alcoholic Bar," etc.), should remind folks there was life after the band's rangier period. Study the tracklist and learn about Matador's "Buy Early Get Now" promotion at Matablog.

This just made my day. These Pavement Reissues are always fantastic. Good songs, great artwork and booklets...the whole deal.
Score = 2
"Neil Hagerty Meets Jon Spencer In A Non-Alcoholic Bar" AKA "Neil Hagerty Meets Jon Spencer In A Blowout".
I remember Malkmus saying a few years ago that if Matador ever got around to doing this reissue that they would have ton of bonus material to choose from. Awesome.
Score = 0
i remember him saying that too, which is why it's disappointing that there are only two songs i haven't heard before.
still buying it the day it comes out of course...

Brighten the Corners is f'ing mediocre at best.
Score = -24
I think BtC is a great album (much better than Wowee Zowee), but come on... enough with the reissues already. I know that CDs are dying and everything, but we don't need to hear every tossed off piece of studio wankery a band does shamelessly tacked on to what made them great in the first place, all for an inflated price.
Score = -8
I think I paid an outrageous price of $14 when I preordered CRCR and WZ. Ridiculous.
Score = 1
Outrageous? They are usually easily under $15-$20 with tons of extra tracks, top quality artwork, and booklet. Give me a break. Go back and listen to your Fall Out Boy.
Score = 5
go back to school son. all 4 reissues so far have been remasters with two discs of ESSENTIAL (to fans) non-album stuff and a really nice booklet, for $14 each. and what's this "shamelessly tacked on" nonsense? so it's shameful for a band to release their non-album material now?
Score = 7
A pretty studio version of "For Sale! Preston School of Industry"? Sign me up.

people saying enough with the reissues need to realize how unruly the ebay market for hard to find vinyl is. im sure im not the only one relieved to buy it <$20 at the local record store.
that said, i love pavement, and am so excited!
Score = 2
Not my favorite Pavement album, but definitely some of my favorite radio sessions. It will be great to have better versions of some of this stuff than something I ripped off of a tape that some guy ripped off of a radio back in 1997.
And I hope that the couple of things that I still haven't heard aren't just like the Sordid Sentinels 20-second sound bytes from the WZ sessions.

pavement always kind of sucked. they can stick the reissues up their asses.
Score = -29
Obviously, I'm excited.

As I recall, these reissues are pretty fairly priced. Just wait a couple months until half the copies are used.

BTC is kinda better than Zowee and Pavement is kinda better than almost anything that's come out this year. Haters are welcome to dine on Paramore.
One thing though -- some of the extra stuff is from the Spit on a Stranger single. Does this mean no Terror Twilight reissue? Not their best work, but I'd love to know what else Nigel Godrich got out of them...
Score = 0
First, BTC is NOT better than Wowee Zowee
second, the spit on a stranger EP was released before Terror Twilight came out, and all of these sessions and b-sides are from the BC era. If you are a big pavement mp3 collector, you know there's plenty of songs still for another reissue, plus a handful i'm sure no one has heard. not to mention some demos from Malkmus' self-titled, which i'm sure were recorded during the TT era as well.
still a lot to look forward to.

I don’t understand how people can complain about these Pavement reissues. They are completely incredible from possibly the greatest band of the 90’s and only cost as much as the regular CD ($14). For does complaining about Brighten the Corners I dare you to listen to “Stereo” or “Starlings in the Slipstream” and say this is a bad CD. It is simply under appreciated then the other albums and is completely incredible.
P.S. For does worried about their being no Terror Twilight reissues, they still have not used material from the “Carrot Rope” singles or the “Major Leagues” EP.
Score = -1
People who hate on Pavement haven't given them a good enough chance.I for one had to keep trying them for a pretty long time before I understood their appeal. Now they're one of my favorite bands, easily. I know that at first not much seems very remarkable about them at all, but they're classics for a reason.

I lovin it ifonly for the inclusion of Space Ghost #1 and 2. Quite possibly the band at their dorkiest and funniest. I saw them perform these on 'Coast to Coast' back in the day and laughed my ass off for hours. Classic.

I love Brighten the Corners. Great great underated record. Much better than TT.
Looking forward to this!

i think it is better than wowee zowee as well. terror twilight is weird because it basically sounds like a solo malkmus record to me than a pavement album. still, sweet reissue.
Score = 0
Brighten The Corners has always been my favorite Pavement album. As good as Slanted & Enchanted and Crooked Rain (and WZ) are, BTC is the first and only Pavement album that contains 0% filler. I feel like people overlook it or write it off because the album didn't come first, but it really needs to be re-evaluated.

Still uncovering Pavement so this will be a welcome addition to the Library!!! I actually enjoy TT as one of my favorites, and always look forward to a solo release. Mr. Malkmus is an indie icon who writes and records music for the right reasons and his catalog remains very consistent to date, you just gotta respect the technique.
