Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, And Flaming Lips To Get Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy For The Who

thubmnail icon: Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, And Flaming Lips To Get Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy For The Who

Or, something like that. Though likely not even half as dirty. Still, wake up -- it's been confirmed Eddie & pals, the Lips, and the Foos are all performing in honor of the Who as part of the third annual VH1 Rock Honors, which takes place at L.A.'s Pauley Pavilion on 7/12. On top of these relative youngsters, the remaining members of the Who will also be on hand to play a set of their own songs. We found out about all of this in a dramatically written press release.

This year's event will deliver a night of high-voltage tribute performances by the three bands all leading up to the spectacular grand finale performance by The Who as they rock the stage. Additional performers, presenters and special guests will be announced as they are confirmed. As a result of The Who's revolutionary and era-defining influence on rock music, this will be the first "VH1 Rock Honors" that salutes just one band.

Taping in Los Angeles at the Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA on July 12, "VH1 Rock Honors: The Who" will premiere on Thursday, July 17 at 9pm on VH1, VH1 Classic and MHD. VH1.com will also offer select performances from the show leading up to and following the on-air premiere at Rock.VH1.com. The Who's monumental legacy will be celebrated with a 2 - hour tribute that will salute the music and the lasting impact of this groundbreaking band. The influence of The Who will be felt through spoken tributes, filmed packages and performances by some of today's premiere rock acts as well as the legends themselves.

On Friday, June 6, tickets will go on sale to WHOLIGANS, members of The Who Fan Club (thewho.com). The general public on sale will be on Sunday, June 8. All tickets will be sold via Ticketmaster. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the efforts of multiple charities including The Teenage Cancer Trust, the Double O Charity, VH1 Save The Music Foundation and select VH1 Classic Rock Autism organizations.

Pearl Jam goes deep into the Who catalog, of course, but let's play 'suggest a song' for the Foo Jam Lips. And, go.

This should be cool. While I'm not really that into Pearl Jam's or Foo Fighters current material, those are probably the 2 best bands that could cover The Who.

FL - 5:15, I Can See For Miles, Slip Kid, I can't explain, you better you bet
PJ - Pure And Easy, Baba, Kids are alright, pretty much anything
FF - I'm Free (good call, matt), join together, the real me

Both The Lips and PJ have covered "Baba O'Riley" before, but PJ have covered tons of Who songs. I think they should try to add My Morning Jacket to the bill so they and Eddie can cover "A Quick One, While He's Away." I'd really like to see PJ perform "Love Reign O'er Me," because their version is f'n incredible! I think the Foos would do a killer version of "Won't Get Fooled Again," Dave would sream his heart our and taylor could pound our Keith Moon's drum solo. F*ck it, they should just give PJ 30 minutes to play a ton of Who songs!

Didnt Pearl Jam cover The Who about a year or so ago for a movie soundtrack. I think they did Love, Reign O'er me.

Anyways, 3 great bands covering one of the greatest. I'd like to see:

The Flaming Lips: Rael 1 or Subsitute
Pearl Jam: I Can't Explain or Behind Blue Eyes
Foo Fighters: Sister Disco or Anyway, anyhow, anywhere

Though this is on vh1, so Expect it to sound like the soundtrack to the CSI series, and Flava Flav and Kid Rock will join Pearl Jam on stage.

Pearl Jam - The Kids Are Alright, Magic Bus
Foo Fighters - Won't Get Fooled Again, The Seeker
Flaming Lips - Pictures of Lily, Going Mobile

"Baba O'Riley" definitely seems like one of those jams where all the performers come out at the end (possibly accompanied by Roger, Pete and John)....

That would be quite a feat to get John out there

FF - "A Quick One"
Lips - "Behind Blue Balls"

I'd love to hear Dave Grohl's take on the vocal for "Won't Get Fooled Again". Him and Daltery will have to duke it out for the "Greatest Scream In Rock" crown.

I think Flaming Lips could do a great version of "Who Are You" (Thinking in terms of synths and Drozd/Coyne harmonies)

Pearl Jam should probably do "Baba O'Reily". Eddie Vedder's voice seems to fit it so well. But then I don't really know them very well.

I'd like to see Paull Weller or Kaiser Chiefs on the bill, representing the British Contingent (The Who are english, after all!). I just hope Oasis don't turn up and churn out their version of "My Generation". I love them, normally, but that was just dire. And the less said about Fred Durst, the better...
