Pearl Jam's Backspacer Coming To Target • PJ's manager has confirmed they shot a Target commercial, but didn't address why fanclub discussion of it was being censored. The Backspacer LP will come this fall not via a label, "but a consortium of partners, including Target as the 'big box' retail partner."

You got it - they totally had more cred when they were keeping it DIY on SONY/EPIC RECORDS THE LAST 18 YEARS.

Fuck cred, Sony/Epic has rights to master recordings. An artist spends years crafting their skill so that some company can keep every ounce of hard work for profit. Ditching labels for freedom is the best thing, sadly very few bands are in that position. Congrats Pearl Jam

If it is a new Pearl Jam album, I don't care where i have to go to buy it. But I promise that while I am in Target, I will not buy any other well priced albums from their rather extensive collection.

I just don't get what part of "they signed an agreement to specifically not blog about this" people don't understand.

It's not censorship - if they refused to agree to it, they didn't have to go to the taping.

they ran tv ads for Best Buy when "Yield" came out back in 1998. this isn't anything new, other than the obvious fact that its sans label. of course BB weren't exclusive big box retailers of the record, but their music was in "yield" ads that showed a BB logo at the end.

As a huge fan I really have no problem with it... Some people have made assumptions about the deal, but it's not going to be available only at Target. "Backspacer" will be available on their website and through independent record stores. If someone can please explain to me how else they might have made this available to people in Iowa or Montana, I'd love to hear it. For years they have kept the fan's best interest in mind and being without a label, they needed to partner up with a large store. They also have a Rock Band coming out, so this is probably not the last time, people will call them sell outs.

If you don't want to buy the album at Target, then buy it from them direct on their website....pretty simple actually. And they get all the $$$ instead of some box store taking their cut. Win Win for all.
