Pete Doherty + Tribute To Disney Tunes = Babys In Shambles

Those in London next Sunday with no plans and a love for Jarvis Cocker and/or the The Jungle Book soundtrack are best advised to buy tix for "Forest Of No Return: Hal Willner presents the Vintage Disney Songbook," a one-night only concert at South Bank's Royal Festival Hall dedicated to celebrating moments in Disney music. The Times Online reports that, along with Jarvis's hat tip to Rikki-Tikki-Tavi's finest hour, Beth Orton, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, and the aforementioned model for children everywhere, dear old Doherty will round out the bill for a show organized by Saturday Night Live producer Hal Willner.

They say Hal's got an address book that'd make Geldof blush and in scoring Van Dyke Parks for the show (who in turn will be scoring the music for the show), he's pulled together a beauty of a beast. Pete's been tapped to sing "Chim Chimney," which means that Pete Doherty will do Dick Van Dyke arranged by Van Dyke Parks and that shouldn't have amused us as it did. And really, shouldn't Pete be doing something from Snow White? (Thank you kindly for the tip, Script Girl)

Awesome. Hal Willner is the genius behind the "Stay Awake" record from the late 80s, wherein Disney songs were reinterpreted by the likes of Bill Frisell, Sinead O'Connor, Natalie Merchant, Los Lobos, the Replacements, Harry Nilsson, Buster Poindexter... hope this events produces another record half as good!

Sorry to be nitpicky, but Rikki-Tiki-Tavi didn't have anything to do with Disney's version of The Jungle Book. However, here's a link to the IMDB page for the (thankfully) songless version of the story animated by Chuck Jones that I watched endlessly as a child. Despite Jarvis being awesome and this event sounding badass, it's kind of a misnomer to call Cocker doing a song from the Disney Jungle Book "Rikki-Tiki-Tavi's finest hour."
