Record Store Day @ Other Music, NYC 4/18/09

Record Store Day won't save indie brick-and-mortar music retailers, but we can all agree it was a lot of fun. Between the exclusive releases and in-store performances and DJ sets, hopefully you found a reason to celebrate your favorite local shop on Saturday. In its third year RSD spread internationally, and had some heavy hitters on board: Dylan, Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, The Smiths, Queen, King Crimson ... you know, typical indie stuff. 2009 represent. The exclusives I was trying to snag sold out long before I even got to East Village institution Other Music. Fair enough, early bird gets the Beck/Sonic Youth split 7". Yet there was still a line just to shop in the store! The last time I waited in line for entry into a record store, I was trying to score Monster tour tickets. DJ sets by Grizzly Bear, The Pains Of Being Pure Of Heart, and The Raveonettes ultimately soundtracked my shopping experience, which was was worth the wait. I snapped some pics in the afternoon and was relieved by photographer Ryan Muir for Bill Callahan's evening set of songs from the avant folkie's Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle. Déjà vu. Also worth mentioning: the clerks at Other Music are pretentious assholes. Video proof...

When we premiered the video 3+ years ago I was not familiar with (future SNL star) Bobby Moynihan. Wonder whatever happened to that Aziz dude.

I think that it would be better if we could just scroll through the photos, instead of having to refresh all the time.

Well that pretension statement about Other Music employees I personally feel is complete b.s. When I was there, they were totally helpful and friendly, even when I was waiting on line for the Callahan show I was just discussing music and the sales that day with an employee (the lanky dude that looked like a beat version of James Iha.) I've heard that statement numerous times and really feel, in my past experiences at least, that it's pretty unjustified.

It was a joke, watch the video and you'll understand. Other Music staff is always friendly and knowledgeable.

Chris doesn't have time to watch videos, he's much to busy jumping to conclusions.

I was laughed at about 8 years ago at Other Music for asking if they had any John B albums. The employee thought I meant Jon B, the R&B crooner and not John B the Drum and Bass producer. I walked out dejected.

Just as well though...a friend had recommended John B, and told me that I should really get into drum and bass. Should actually thank OM for helping me dodge a bullet on that one.

Other Music...good place to pick up a free Arthur or have a burning question about Gene Clark answered...I think AnCo are right to be interested in film...now that Virgin is sinking. The only place worth hanging out for free in is Barnes and Noble...how sad is that? Or maybe Barnes & Noble can just open a bar in the basement...

Snow White

if you live in NY shouldn't you be worried about paying rent, not buying albums? Overpriced overpopulated cesspit

The first album I pulled out when I got here was Stones "Some Girls" ...it's their late summer early fall new wave punky NYC album. (PAY ATTENTION TO BILL WYMAN AND THE DIRTY PROJECTORS!)A whole album of throwaway FAzed cookies from that era would be a real treat. (ZZ Top certainly got the message)
No...all that mythical F.Scott Fitzgerald stuff is all true. People come here to find that something.,,I think Lincoln called it the New York Groove...

They had a vinyl copy of El Grupo Nuevo there that I almost bought, but I talked myself out of it because what the heck am I going to do with a vinyl record? Also Jason Schwartzman was there... I know what you're thinking, and that crossed my mind too but again, really, what would I do with a Jason Schwartzman??

I love Bill Cali! Cannot wait to hear the new record. Did anyone else notice his voice on the Joanna Newsom song 'Only Skin'? Totally makes the song.
