Dirty Projectors/Magnolia Electric Co./Crystal Antlers @ Williamsburg Waterfront, Brooklyn 7/19/09
A busy weekend of live music in NYC wound up with a fantastic, if somewhat mismatched, lineup at the Williamsburg Waterfront on Sunday. The show was the second installment of the relocated "Pool Parties," a series of free summer shows shifted from McCarren Pool to East River State Park. The move has its benefits (beautiful river breezes, breathtaking views of the city) and drawbacks (beer pens and lots of state park rangers), but overall there's no better way to spend no money in the city. Magnolia Electric Co. were a late addition to the bill when White Denim canceled, and though they were a downcast band to have sandwiched between the dynamic psychedelic punk of Crystal Antlers and the headspinning conjurations of that other band we sorta like, seeing Jason Molina work through his Josephine material in the flesh was still thrilling for anyone familiar with it. Unfortunately not many were, but no matter -- the weather was perfect, Molina was patiently self-aware and delivered a touching if sedate set, and the day's openers and closers were in top form. Dirty Projectors mixed their Bitte bits with Rise Above and New Attitude songs, Haley doubled Amber's vocals on "Stillness," and a Byrne-less "Knotty Pine" closed the day. If you couldn't make it, take this four-song set and interview with the DPs on NPR as consolation.

Angel, I'm in love.

Fuckin' Dirty Projectors again. Fuck these guys.

hate to be a stickler, but Crystal Antlers were the late addition.
ps Dirty Projectors were amazing!!!
Score = 1
I´m stealing Amber Coffman. And keeping her.
Score = 2
I would love to be the mayo on an amber/angel sandwich... mmmm...
Score = 1
Can there be just one Dirty Projectors news item without a bunch of dorks posting adolescent shit like this? Go get some fresh air.
Score = 3
Lighten up, poseur. Go listen to some Deerhunter in a dimly lit room while you keep telling yourself how different and special you are, even though you are the clone of countless other indie trend followers. Oh, and don't forget to keep checking Pitchfork while you are in there!
Score = -4
Poseur? I'm just saying, every time there's a post on this site about Dirty Projectors, somebody mentions an "Angel and Amber sandwich." Literally every time, which I think might qualify it as an indie trend --- unless it's just you posting the same comment every time, which is actually pretty funny. You're a funny guy. Women love guys that can make them laugh, Dave. Humor is probably your best shot at getting yourself sandwiched between two women, so roll with it.
p.s. Stereogum and Pitchfork post the same shit brah.
Score = 4
I am well aware Pitchfork and Stereogum post the same shit, but Pitchfork is without a doubt more infamous for their influential ways. One thing I will give you is that posting immature comments can detract from the music and the appreciation of it. In all actuality, I think the Dirty Projectors are amazing, but if anyone tried to tell me that Dave Longstreth would be as successful as he is without such amazingly talented, attractive female singers, I would tell them they are crazy. Sex sells, even in indie rock. The sandwich comment should be taken is stride... there are a lot worse things to get upset about. Like the success of Wavves.
Score = -1
Of course sex sells. But Dirty Projectors are hardly going out on stage in sequined lingerie, so maybe (everybody) try to express your appreciation for how "amazingly talented" these women are without tearing them down or reducing them to pin-up status.
P.S. Brian McComber is a fucking incredible drummer.
Score = 3
They may not wear sequined lingerie, but no one can deny that had it been two not so cute 300 pound women staring in each others direction with blue and red bubbles around their heads on that cover, performing in the band and just as talented vocally mind you, that people would still be into them as much. I am not a sexist, just a realist. People are judgmental assholes.
And yes, Brian McComber is awesome. Some of the time signatures on those songs is unbelievable.

Dorky guys objectifying female band members, random vitriolic backlash\hatred, excessive hyperbolic praise (they are good though) - it's got to be a Dirty Projectors blog post!

Lighten up, guys. The stereogum comment space is hardly the venue for intellectual conversation about music, so why so tense when someone makes a joke? It's just music!

The Move's "Shazam" is another one that seems to activate simular taste the same taste buds that "Bitte" does...absolutely..Roy Wood was insanely musical...
