Explosions In The Sky/No Age/Eluvium @ The Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles 6/27/09
Andrew YoussefFor 10 years now, Austin's Explosions In The Sky have been putting their stamp on a cinematic strain of expansive, chiming instrumental post-rock. This tour is functioning as something of a decade-anniversary celebration, then, with Munaf thanking the Palladium Saturday night for getting emotional with them for all these years. They should thank Friday Night Lights, too; while The Show Everybody Should Be Watching's ratings remain criminally low, there's no denying a certain swell of adoration for EITS after three seasons of providing note-perfect theme music situational music to the note-perfect small town classic. (Gabe knows what I'm talking about.) The Palladium set offered little by way of light show; according to photographer Andrew Youssef, it was just a no frills, "straight up melt your face rock" show. Good undercard too, including fellow atmospheric dramatist Eluvium, and suf-punk relief coming by way of No Age, who played a new song that may or may not have been titled "Fuck Prop 8 In The Face," which may or may not be one of the great song titles of 2009. actually, the FNL theme itself is not by EITS. i know because i read it on wiki.
but these guys are just the best live. face melting, indeed.

Worst/weirdest crowd ever, including the twee girl that kept sitting down on the floor, texting, and the borderline psycho dude screaming, jumping up and down and pounding the floor. Bizzarro land. The band was fantastic though.

nobody was there to see No Age, which was a buzz kill. I like the 'situational music' description this author uses - i coined a new genre though, much better (this is a job app, SG) - EITS is actually 'crying sex music' - like the sex that is so deep and beautiful that you cry during. generally not good for any other situation tho. the author said nothing nice about them - hey, um, the sound was good? yawn...
and, wow, those renovations resulted in two tall draft stellas for - ahem - TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS? somebody just burn that place down, please, it hasn't been a good venue since the 60's.

There was definitely no frills whatsoever about the venue itself, but I had better luck with my immediate neighbors than did Jaded Asshole. The crowd was definitely not what I was expecting or had seen at other EITS shows, but they made for some damn good people watching.
EITS was great, of course...my biggest problem is that they are so much fun to watch, but I always seem to have a hard time opening my eyes when I hear them live...
Eluvium was actually also really good, and incredibly impressive... No Age seemed like nice, entertaining dudes whose album is probably goodt, but compared to the near always immaculate sound of EITS, they sounded pretty rough around the edges live.
