Julian Casablancas @ Downtown Palace Theatre, LA 11/6/09

The Stroke's first solo gigs were in Japan this summer, and Monday's Spaceland show was a last minute surprise, so while last night was JC's 4th ever solo show, it was most stateside fans' first shot to see his synth-pop makeover in person. With elaborate stage backdrops and light-up costumes for their encore, Julian and band played the 8-track Phrazes along with b-sides like "I'll Try Anything Once." (Sadly "Christmas" didn't come early.) Perhaps the real spectacle was Fabrizio Moretti and Albert Hammond, Jr being mobbed by fans upstairs. The pair posed for pics, signed autographs, and -- since they arrived separately -- fans cheered when they hugged. Andrew Youssef delivers these shots, where you'll also see openers Rainbow Arabia and Julian's drummer's oh-so-controversial Mets jacket. Maybe it's his only jacket, you guys! We've also got the tour itinerary after the jump; NYC shows haven't been announced yet, but we're told those'll happen in January.

It's good to see that Fab and Albert were there, but the most encouraging sign from those photos is the mic stand.

Ya know, i was listening to his new cd...and by midway thru track 3 i was like 'omg...its effing GENIUS! holy crap, im telling everyone to get this!!' ...Nnnnn then tracks 4, 5, n 6 came...OK songs, i guess, but, totally ruined the avalanche of catchy tune momentum, but oh well, still a good solo effort. N it's probably good its not flawlessly amazing, he'd prolly be way too tempted to pull a Gwen Stephani for the next 5 years...and then the strokes boys would be all jealousss.. yadda yadda yadda:)

GENIUS? I thought some of the tracks are awful. The best ones are still nowhere as good as any of the songs from The Strokes 1st 2 cd's from many, many years ago. I'm kind of surprised people even still pay attention to these guys. Flash in the pan if you ask me. Just like Interpol. Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the only late 90's/early 00's NYC band from that scene who have actually evolved.

I'm guessing you've never heard of The Walkmen then?

No no no, Strokes are not a flash in the pan, not at all, they're too good. Their guitarists are really amazing, n being a guitarist from way back i do not throw that term around, n when they're clicking they're one of the best out there. They've only done 3 cds, they're all good, i really liked the last one, unfortunately they're just on a 4 year side-project sabbatical apparantly.

YYYs have been disappointing though i agree, but then again, who can live up to that much hype? Not many, i still like n beilieve in them, they got real talent too, just doesn't always show up in cd form. But live i'd see 'em any day any time.

Jules played a pretty weak setlist last Friday. $50 - $60 for 11 songs. C'mon dude....I know you're showcasing your new album but can you at least play your entire new album (13 songs)? and what's up with just one Strokes song in your set. Very cool that you chose a rarity Strokes song but c'mon....play some more Strokes songs. There is no reason why Jules can't play a 18 - 20 song set. I guess I'll spend my $50 - $60 elsewhere instead of these shows.

Setlist:
Ludlow St.
Out of the Blue
Old Hollywood
River of Brakelights
Tourist
11st Dimension
4 Chords of the Apocalypse

Intermission

30 Minute Boyfriend
Lieft & Right in the Dark
I’ll Try Anything Once
Glass

It's not a Strokes gig, why should he feel he has to play Strokes songs? Think, guy. He's showcasing his solo stuff, not riding on the coattails of his other band.

NOOO, i mean yer 1/2 right, last guy, but i side with the concert set complainer:) Solo guys WAYYY too often like play their shit only, n it's just kinda rediculous most the time. To me there's zero excuse to not at least play a couple of the 'oldies' ...i mean, at least b sides, not single tracks...or just re-do a song in a different way, throw yer fans a bone ya fuck:)

Bebe....if you read my post correctly you would have noticed that I said that he should at least play his entire new album. Read before you post, guy. Granted I was wrong about the # of songs....I said 13 but there is only 11 songs (including the bonus tracks) on the new album. So rip me a new one for that. OK...so he played 10 out of the 11 songs in his set.....but still people are paying $50 - $60 a ticket and the dude only plays an 11 song 75 minute set. That seems like a rip-off to me. Play your entire new album and then play some stuff that people really want to hear.....ya know...the band that made you famous and the reason why you're on that stage in the first place. WIthout The Strokes there would be no 4 night residency in LA for Julian Casablancas.
