Metallica Play With Two Bassists, But Not Eminem, At Rock Hall Induction
The Rock Hall shifted gears this year for its induction ceremony, trading the swanky/stuffy hotel cocktail soiree of years past for a return to Cleveland, home to the hall since 1995. It was the second time the city hosted the event, and rather than an audience exclusively comprising ungracefully aging industry suits, this weekend's festivities featured ungracefully aging industry suits and something like 5,800 common folk in the rafters. New inductees Metallica and Run-D.M.C. clogged most of the photog memory cards, though this year's class also featured Little Anthony & The Imperials, Spooner Oldham, Bobby Womack, and Jeff Beck. Eminem was there in black to induct Run-D.M.C. and remind you that he is a thing, double-member Jimmy Page did Jeff Beck's honors (both were previously welcomed as the Yardbirds), and Rob Trujillo-era Metallica made nice with Jason Newsted, performing a double-bassed "Master Of Puppets" and "Enter Sandman." Watching Jason and Rob scream "Master!" into the mic was a nice image, listening to the farty rumble of the low end was a nice reminder why Metallica is not a double-bassed band. We've got some video highlights and Metallica family portraits for you.
Here Eminem inducts Run-D.M.C. into the Rock Hall:

"Enter Sandman"
"Train Kept A Rollin'" All-Star Jam

Too bad Hetfield went all Peter Brady on us at 1:41 of Master. But it is nice to know his balls are about to drop.

Aging messes up your voice, especially if you've been singing metal-style all your life and didn't get proper coaching. Ask ozzy...

Yup, to the point where even VH1 (home of quality trash-talking reality nobodies) has dropped coverage. Who gets Fuse anyway?

Metallica is basically become the thrash version of U2. A lot of people have turned on them over the years but they still bring the goods at the basic element of a rock band going out performing live and being pretty awesome

Meh, all this was expected. At least "Train Kept A Rollin'" was pretty good. Still prefer Yardbirds version though.

Never really liked Metallica even when I liked metal as a kid. Still, that was sorta' fun. I kind of wish I had seen them at SXSW.
I'm forgiving of older cats who still seem to be willing to piss off fans. I'm not gonna buy an album but I'd see a show if I could ever get cheap tickets.

Good to see Jimmy Page honoring Jeff beck. For the longest time it seemed that the trio of guitar gods from the Yard Birds - Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck were more competitors than buddies.
