New Grizzly Bear - "Southern Point"

Yesterday, in Stereogum's 101st blog post (jesus) on Grizzly Bear, we highlighted "Cheerleader," which Amrit called "an outright standout on an LP full of them." It's now the most commented new thread on the site, with you guys arguing over the fidelity of the stream and whether "Cheerleader" was the ideal promotional track to launch Veckatimest. You can stop arguing (but don't, we like when you argue): Warp has released a 192kbps MP3 you can download here, and the blog Pretty Much Amazing found audio of creeping, Crosby-esque album opener "Southern Point" which you can enjoy here:

If you're in Austin for SXSW, here's where to see Grizzly in the flesh:

3/19 - Central Presbyterian Church (200 E 8th St) @ 8:30 PM
3/20 - Cedar Street Courtyard (208 W 4th St) @ 11:45 PM

They're scheduled in between PB&J and Dinosaur Jr at that Blackberry-sponsored Cedar St. gig. You might wanna get on line now.

If you follow Ed Droste's Twitter, you know that "Two Weeks" has a video by Patrick Daughters (he did "1234") and a remix by Fred Falke in the can. Will letcha know when those are released into the wild. In the meantime, check out Ed's behind-the-scenes pics from the shoot.

Veckatimest is out 5/26 via Warp.

Animal Collective > Grizzly Bear.

Figured we could just get this out of the way early on and allow for discussion of this great track.

Katie,

Unfortunately, that's not about to stop all the 17 year-olds from saying in earnest what you've said in jest.

Another nice song.

Sounds like the dude from Steely Dan at the beginning.
Did he guest on the album? Donald F something?
That would definitely make this the album of the decade!
If you like Steely Dan.

Steely Dan makes me car sick.
And it reminds me of watching Love Boat with my baby sitter.

Steely Dan is good.
...For me to poop on.

I can't believe this album doesn't drop until the end oy May--I'm guessing they try to push up that date.

How anyone could call this song boring is beyond me, it's got so many different parts, instead garbage can drums and tons of melody.

D'oh ho ho. Well-played, rogue (not well-played).

I still have yet to see a musically sound and logical backing behind any of these "boring" comments. I challenge someone to explain to me in musical terms why this band is boring. Because there is a fundamental difference between music actually being musically bland or boring and it simply being a matter of taste because they're not doing the things you find to be musically aesthetically pleasing.

If it really is a matter of taste, then own up to it and just accept it.

Can we save the discussion about how epic an album is until at least a year after it's released? Anytime someone's favorite band releases an album it's immediately the greatest thing since Revolver. Then his new favorite band releases a new album the next month and it's fucking Pet Sounds. There have been like 5 albums in the past 20 years that people give a shit about for more than a year and it's not likely this or MPP is going to be the next. It's still OK to listen to it, though. Fuck.

I couldn't agree more with megaindiedouch. I seem to get about 100 albums of new music a year and it seems like about a quarter of these are hearlded as one of the greatest records of our time. But when I review records by year (best thing about itunes smart playlist) I notice that after 2 years, there are really very few records from a given year seem to warrant such high praise. It really does take time to see how well records wear. (it's even better going back 10 years to see what seemed so great in 1999 can still be called a great album. (Let's be honest 69 love songs actually only has 10 great songs.)).

I'll also add that the music I keep listening to a few years later isn't always what I would have guessed. On a pro-AC note, I would have never guessed that Feels would be a record I still cared about, but there it is. (Not so much with Strawberry Jam).

Look, I know I'm headed for a -549 for criticizing this band, but their stuff seems to be 90% artifice, 10% song. Where are the hooks? They daintily arrange subtle percussive effects, sparse guitars, etc, all to cover up the fact that there's basically no song under it.
