Photos, Video From The 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards

When MTV's college-obsessed little sister station mtvU announced the nominations for this year's Woodie Awards, we had some fun trying to make sense of the logic underlying the way in which they had grouped together bands and pit them against one another. The logic being: their demographic is college, and college is the time when our tastes change! This is the time to experiment with our sexuality, or at least with the contents of our iPods. The apparent Viacom dictate, then, is to be all things to all people, and so the awards followed suit. Your winners:

  • Kings Of Leon (Woodie Of The Year)
  • Never Shout Never (Breaking Woodie)
  • Tech N9ne (Left Field Woodie)
  • Matt & Kim (Best Video Woodie)
  • Green Day (Performing Woodie)
  • Jamie Tworkowski (Good Woodie)

If you've only heard a portion of those acts, then the Woodies are doing their job! That said, if there is a culture having a moment, or at least having a moment in terms of pageviews, that is the culture that listens to bands like Passion Pit, Clipse, the Dead Weather, and Death Cab For Cutie, the same kids that will quote you Mr. Show or tell you about how Malvina Reynolds wrote the theme song for Weeds. It is the culture of you. So while the Woodies Awards were about being all things to all co-eds, the Woodies Awards Show would love for you personally to tune in. It'll air 12/4, but until then, some pics of the fun faces that walked the red carpet and performed at last night's ceremony, including the aforementoned bands, actors associated with the aforementioned shows, and college-rap mascot/clown Asher Roth. Enjoy!

Eh. Not surprised by those lackluster winners at all (though waiting on the full list). It seems rare a good band wins these things, even though there are great nominees. I blame the new college kids who were getting wasted to Fall Out Boy and getting laid to Dashboard Confessional in high school, and their idea of "cutting edge indie" music is recent Kings of Leon.

I like the picture of David Cross and his daughter. What? That's his girlfriend? Damn it's good to be funny!

David Cross is a weird-lookin douche. Seriously, how does he land Am Tam? Can't be by being a "standup comedian"

MTV lost me a long long time ago

Tech N9ne? Jamie T? Never Shout Never? Never heard of them. Is it because I graduated from college a few months ago? Am I starting to lose my edge?

As a college student, the majority of college students I know do NOT like Green Day or Asher Roth. And who is Never Shout Never?
