Primal Scream @ Club Nokia, Los Angeles 3/16/09

Last night in Los Angeles, Primal Scream kicked off their first set of shows on this side of the Atlantic in a good while. They're here ostensibly to promote their now, via the Björn Yttling (of PB&J) produced Beautiful Future, but the setlist catered to those who'd been waiting all these years for a look at Bobby -- reaching as far back as Screamadelica ("Movin' On Up") and hitting most of the studio stops thereafter, including a solid chunk of XTRMNTR ("Kill All Hippies," "Exterminator," "Swastika Eyes," "Shoot Speed," and "Accelerator"). Also, they've got Mani on bass. Maybe you should see them at SXSW next week. Aside from their SXSW stops, Primal Scream's doing this tour with Kuroma (the band of Whigs founding bassist/former MGMT touring member Hank Sullivant,) and one more with Brian Jonestown Massacre. Hear Kuroma at their site, enjoy the photos by Andrew Youssef, and here are your Primal Scream tour dates with last night's setlist:

The last 3 primal scream albums have been utter shit - the worst being Riot City Blues. They lost it after a streak of just mind blowing work (Vanishing Point, Xtrmntr, Evil Heat).

It's hard to believe you are even a music fan, which presumably you are considering you posted to this website. But with comments like this, where you claim that "Riot City Blues" is "utter shit" you simply look like a fool.

Sorry - meant to say their last 2 CD's have been shit. Riot City Blues was one of the most disappointing albums I've ever heard - especially after coming off the great Evil Heat. The new one is slightly better but has terrible production and is just lacking in ideas. Still there aren't many bands in their 40s that could put out a record like Xtrmn8r. It's easily my fave cd of all time.

I agree. Vanishing Point and Exterminator are borderline classics, on top of being outright awesome. Evil Heat was relentlessly cool too. But their recent stuff is derivative and uninspired. All the worst things about their work periods.

All that being said, I saw them on the XTRMNTR tour, and they fucking ripped! I bet they still do. Unless they stopped using some of the heavier drugs, that is.

Actually Beautiful Future has some really nice tracks on it, and Evil Heat was one of their last three albums. Directed at commenter above

Pup Caplan has a point. I was at this show last night and by far the best stuff they played was the stuff from XTRMNTR and Screamadelica. Very dissapointing that they played nothing off of Vanishing Point. The versions of Shoot Speed Kill Light and Accelerator they did were incredible though. Look for the Shoot Speed video on youtube.

They way I look at it is the more straight rockn'nroll Primal Scream are the worse they are. The more weird and trippy they are the better they are. I was at the Club Nokia show and the best moments were all from XTRMNTR and Screamadelica. Shoot Speed Kill Light was the highlight and someone already posted a vid of it to You Tube, check it out.

Very dissappointed they didn't play anything from Vanishing Point. The XTRMNTR songs were amazing as was Higher Than The Sun and Damaged. I'm not too familliar with the new album, but thought the songs sounded OK. I was bummed that the encore had Country Girl in there. i would have preffered Burning Wheel! I agree that Riot City Blues is shit.

Was that Joel Gion and Matt Hollywood in those BJM pics??? Damn, I thought Matt never played with them anymore, hopefully the both of them are still on tour when they come to NYC.....I want to hear those Matt Hollywood tunes sung by him. That would be awesome........oh yeah, Primal Scream is amazing and I cant wait to see them in NYC next weekend

Yeah Joel and Matt Hollywood played with BJM last night. Matt sang something - Not if you were the last dandy on earth I think. They did a great version of Hide and Seek. But overall they sounded too guitar heavy, not enough drums in the mix, and seemed overly professional. I like my BJM nice and loose and on-edge, which they really weren't last night. Of course the 8:45-9:30 slot didn't help create the right kind of feel for them either......

Merman21 I totally agree with you, Burning Wheel or Kowalski or something instead of Country Girl!

yeah BJM are playing philly in a few weeks (although oddly enough not with the Scream), it'd be awesome if Joel and Matt were along for the ride.
