Robin Pecknold/Throw Me The Statue @ Neumos, Seattle 7/11/09
Saturday night was the closing to a week of benefits in support of the Vera Project, a "music and arts center run by and for youth," dubbed A Drink For The Kids and featuring Grand Hallway, Throw Me The Statue, and a special "solo" headlining set from Robin Pecknold. The lead Fleet Fox delivered a set of his own band's tunes, traditional songs, and some well-chosen covers -- from Neutral Milk Hotel to the Mag Fields to Fleetwood Mac -- joined at times by two of his day job co-workers (J. Tillman and Skyler Skeljet) and later his sister, Aja. Pecknold was quick to tell the crowd the Vera Project benefit wasn't exactly his kind of crowd ("I don't really drink, and I hate kids"), setting the tone for what everybody's called a fun and funny night of charitable good times. Our photographer Laura Musselman distilled the evening like so: "The more you drink at these bars/venues during ADftK, the more money gets donated to them; despite the encouragement to get wasted, the vast majority of the crowd was sweet, quiet, and respectful," and that the few drunk-shouters were "pretty tame and funny." Jackson Barnes captured the whole thing in MP3 form. Here are two worth grabbing:
Robin Pecknold - "Two-Headed Boy" (Live) (MP3)
Robin Pecknold - "Dreams" (Live) (MP3)

What do you know, a NMH cover that doesn't make me want to stab my eardrums with a rusty screwdriver.

Re: THB I felt a wave of melancholy when he got to "...hands across her faaaaa-e-aaaaa-e-aaaa-aaaace" and it didn't sound like Jeff Mangum. Very nice rendition, though.
