Street Scene 2009 In Photos

Some 30,000 people over two days crammed into the six-block area in San Diego's East Village that hosted the 25th annual Street Scene this past weekend. That's a strong number, albeit down from last year when people weren't scrambling for money to put food on their families. Still, those who made it witnessed a righteous lineup featuring Mama Arulpragasam, Wavves (now with 100% more Zach Hill), with both the emergence of Conor Oberst's beard (that's him up there) and the resurrection of Devendra Banhart's. Our intrepid photog Andrew Youssef braved some intense sun to deliver this crop of shots, so think of him as you sip your iced coffee and click through all the photos of so much facial hair.

sounds of buzz

Does anyone have any more info on this festival being broke and unable to pay most of the bands on side stages?

Ain't got no mo' info save for Los Campesinos!'s frontman passionately claiming as much prior to their set's exclamation point, "Sweet Dreams, Sweet Cheeks." I believe his words were approximately, "Earlier today we were told the festival is broke and that they might not be able to pay us."

Payment or not, Campesinos! tore the roof off the muthasucka, per their usual M.O.
