The Decemberists (The Hazards Of Love Visualized) @ Royce Hall, LA 10/19/09

We had Andrew Youssef shoot the Decemberists' tour opener back in May, which might have been all the L.A. Decemberists show coverage we needed, if it wasn't for the band's twist on last night's US tour closer at UCLA's Royce Hall: The Hazards Of Love was performed, in its entirety, in conjunction with special synchronous animation created by the filmmakers Guilherme Marcondes, Julia Pott, Peter Sluszka and Santa Maria. Following that set the Decemberists played a bunch of older tunes, and one that was entirely new. Scroll through the pics, the setlist, and a short trailer to help you visualize what you missed:

SET ONE
Hazards of Love

SET TWO
01 "The Sporting Life" (Colin started the song counting in french like Morrissey's live album Beethoven was Deaf...and later snuck in "Will nature make a man of me yet?" ie.. The Smiths "This Charming Man" lyrics)[Super Morrissey nerd points]
02 "Billy Liar" (Colin got crowd to sing a 3 part harmony and ended the song with a kick and "jazz hands"..pretty funny to say the least)
03 "Everything I Try To Do, Nothing Turns Out Right"
04 "The Crane Wife Part 1 & 2"
05 "The Chimbley Sweep"
06 "O Valencia!"
07 "Crazy On You" (Heart cover)
----
08 New Song (Colin Solo) [lyrics mentioned "Keeping the Winter at Bay"]
09 "Sons And Daughters"

Here's a trailer to give you a sense:

This would be really cool if this album didn't suck so hard.

Looks fantastic, The Hazards of Love is possibly the best album of the year for me.

Amazing, amazing show. It was like two different concerts in one.

Hazards of Love just might be their masterpiece and sounded incredible. The animated visualizer contributed but did not distract from the music and (thankfully) was not a literal depiction of the album story. It was a phenomenal performance all around.

The second show was surprisingly funny, improvisational and rocking.

say what you want about the hazards of love but this band is poised to be the best live act of 09

I like Colin Meloy just fine but I don't think I'd plunk down money to hear him sing "Crazy on You."

Colin didn't sing Crazy on You, the two women supporting the band did.

He doesn't sing it -- it's done by Becky Stark and Shara Worden, and they rock it out. It's an awesome cover.

December 2009? Does that mean some sort of DVD release of the show/visualizations? Looks cool, would definitely pick something like that up.

And Crazy On You was fantastic, they played it when they were last in the Seattle area.
